A coal miner\u2019s daughter, Marlene Elliott never felt like she\u202fquite\u202ffit in growing up in Taylorville, Illinois. Her father worked for one of the world\u2019s largest underground coal mines, and the town was home to mostly working-class families. Elliott\u2019s ambitions, however, leaned more toward the creative side. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She taught herself to read at the age of 4. When she read \u201cTo Kill a Mockingbird\u201d in the third grade, Elliott identified strongly with the story\u2019s narrator, Scout. She knew then that she wanted to be a writer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unsure of how to become a writer without going to college, which she couldn\u2019t afford, Elliott embarked on a decades-long career as an American Sign Language interpreter. Now, at the age of 68, she is living her dream as a graduate student in the University of Washington Bothell\u2019s Master of Fine Arts in\u202fCreative Writing & Poetics<\/a> program. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve returned to my first love, writing, after 38 years of being steeped in other people\u2019s words,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s been a very full circle experience for me, coming back around to something that was my hope, my refuge and my future when I was very young.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sense of belonging<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

After high school, Elliott moved to Corvallis, Oregon. In the 1960s, Corvallis was a typical Pacific Northwest hippie town, and she discovered the sense of belonging she lacked in a coal-mining town. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI spent my 20s writing poetry and hanging out at the coffee house, and living and writing with other poets and artists \u2014 a very bohemian lifestyle,\u201d she said. \u201cBut I didn\u2019t have any traction as a writer and didn\u2019t know how to proceed with it as a career.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her early 30s, Elliott became a sign language interpreter and moved to Rochester, New York. She still kept her bohemian spirit alive, even living for a time in a yoga ashram.\u202fThen, when her son was born, she moved to Portland, Oregon, wanting to keep him connected to the Pacific Northwest, which she still considered home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Elliott struggled to get enough work as an interpreter and later returned to Rochester after her son graduated from high school. She collaborated with a deaf clinical psychologist at the University of Rochester on research on early language access for deaf children. A decade later, after the research lost its funding, Elliott’s job ended. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll of a sudden, my academic career was over,\u201d she said.\u202f\u201cBut it turned out to be the best thing that ever happened to me.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A writer at heart<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Elliott again\u202freturned home to the Pacific Northwest. Only this time, at the urging of friends, she landed in Seattle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She continued working as an interpreter, but by that\u202ftime\u202fhad started to lose her hearing\u00a0which limited\u00a0the type of work she could do. One of her friends recommended she\u202flook into\u202fvocational rehabilitation funding to pay for her to go back to school. With her tuition secured, she could\u202fat long last\u202fpursue a degree in writing\u00a0\u2014 and on June 14, she will walk across the stage at commencement to receive her degree\u202f.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe MFA in Creative Writing & Poetics at UW Bothell has been the perfect program for me, and I would not change a thing,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel so relieved and grateful to come home to myself as a creator and a channeler \u2014 I think of myself as channeling more than creating.\u202fThat\u2019s\u202fjust my nature. I\u2019m\u202fan old hippie, so I respond and tune into energy and go with the flow.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The process\u202fwasn\u2019t\u202falways easy, she added. There was still a lot of self-doubt along the way. But through the program, she said,\u202fshe has\u202fbeen able to push that doubt away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhatever criticism I had going about my age or just the feeling that I had waited too long, those were all counteracted by openness, curiosity and a spirit of non-judgmental experimentation that was fundamental to my experience and opened doors for me.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Surrealism and whimsy<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In her classes, Elliott was exposed to a variety of authors and writing styles, which helped her to hone her own style. \u201cMy work lives at the intersection of surrealism and whimsy,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her approach to writing \u2014 and her thesis \u2014 was\u202finspired\u202fby the novella \u201cTrout Fishing in America,\u201d by Richard Brautigan. Published in 1967, the book became widely known for its unique avant-garde structure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe book has no narrative arc, and it really blew open the doors of what it meant to write a novel,\u201d Elliott said. \u201cMy thesis is an homage to \u2018Trout Fishing in America\u2019 and the idea of how you make a thing a novel when\u202fthere\u2019s\u202fno narrative arc. This was my creative problem to solve.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea for her book, \u201cTouching Trees,\u201d first came to her more than 20 years ago, she added. Although she tried to write it then, she\u202fdidn\u2019t\u202fhave the tools to finish it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI learned all of these tools in the first year of the program that I put to work on my thesis this past year,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd now\u202fI\u2019ve\u202ffinished it. I wrote that novel. I did it. And I never could have done it without the MFA in Creative Writing & Poetics. It was like they held up a big lantern for me and said \u2018Hey, come this way.\u2019 I\u2019m so happy right now\u202fto\u202fhave finished it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never too late<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When talking to other people her age, Elliott said that like her, they often have things they wanted to do but never did.\u202fIt\u2019s\u202fimportant to her to share her experience so that others will know\u202fit\u2019s\u202fnever too late. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s\u202fvery tempting to say\u202fit\u2019s\u202ftoo late for me. I may never get anything published, who knows? But I\u202fdefinitely won\u2019t get anything published if I\u202fdon\u2019t\u202fwrite anything. And I\u202fdefinitely won\u2019t\u202fget published if I\u202fdon\u2019t\u202fsend it to anybody for publication. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnd\u202fI\u2019ve\u202fgotten a lot of support in the program to do both of those things,\u201d she said. \u201cI would just say\u202fit’s\u202falways the right thing to do to engage with your creative life. It\u202fdoesn’t\u202fmatter what age you are.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether she gets published or not, Elliott said the reward is in the writing itself. \u201cI don\u2019t have any words to describe how liberating it is to have done something I desired to do since I was probably 16,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s\u202fa very powerful kind of momentum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
