At the close of each academic year, student research is\u202fshowcased\u202fand honored through events such as the University of Washington Undergraduate Research Symposium. The event is an opportunity to recognize not only the work of students \u2014 but also\u202ftheir\u202fmentors. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students presenting in the symposium each year can nominate mentors who have had a profound impact on their education and research.\u202fA small committee of faculty and staff then reviews the nominations to select\u202frecipients of the 2026 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Mentor Award<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, Dr. Charlie Collins,\u202fassociate professor\u202fin\u202fthe UW Bothell\u2019s School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences<\/a>,\u202fwas among the 11 recipients selected from a\u202fpool of 305 nominations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDr. Collins has been an exceptional mentor,\u201d\u202fwrote\u202fAdarina Uthman,\u202fa senior majoring in Psychology,\u202fin her letter nominating Collins for the award. \u201cWhat further distinguishes Dr. Collins is his commitment to developing scholars, not just projects on paper. He invests ample time in sharing his research skills while encouraging intellectual curiosity and modeling integrity in human subjects research.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deep impact of educators<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Growing up, Collins\u202fdidn\u2019t\u202falways see himself\u202fattending\u202funiversity.\u202fNo one in his family had\u202fgone to\u202fcollege before, and he struggled in a traditional high school. It\u202fwasn\u2019t\u202funtil\u202fhe moved to an alternative high school that he\u202ffinally found a learning environment that truly engaged him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy teachers were incredible, and it was one of the first times that I had experienced adult educators who were willing to answer the dumb questions,\u201d he said. \u201cIt really was inspiring to see the impact an educator could have on a student.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduating,\u202fCollins\u202fwent to community college and\u202fagain\u202fwas surprised by how different it was from his K-12 experience.\u202fHe said,\u202f\u201cI really struggled in traditional\u202fhigh school, but I thrived in college because I could\u202fpick\u202fmy own path.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He then transferred to the University of California, Riverside, where he received a\u202fbachelor\u2019s degree in\u202fPsychology. He received his master\u2019s in Psychological\u202fScience from California State University, Chico. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI loved the university setting and found it so empowering, so I wanted to continue my career after\u202fgraduate\u202fschool in a university setting,\u201d he said. \u201cI love research \u2014 but I also love teaching and wanted to move into teaching in a way where I could contribute to my community and give back to students with similar backgrounds to my own.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He finished his doctorate in Ecological-Community Psychology\u202fat Michigan State University in 2013 and joined the faculty at UW Bothell shortly after. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perspectives of non-traditional students<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In his research, Collins examines how\u202feconomic structures, racial hierarchies, political institutions and social systems shape psychological well-being,\u202fhealth\u202fand collective capacity.\u202fHe often includes his undergraduate students\u202fto participate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI actively recruit non-traditional students to work with me on my research projects because it\u2019s a\u202fway for me to raise the floor for students who already have significant hurdles,\u202fcompared to their peers who are more\u202fprivileged or come from traditional backgrounds,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collins\u202fcenters\u202fthe perspectives of non-traditional students not only in his role as a mentor but also as a researcher, focusing on topics\u202fthat may affect them, such as systemic instability and inequality.\u202fIn his latest project, Collins and his team of student researchers are exploring the impacts of\u202fstructural instabilities\u202fon students\u2019 well-being. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project developed from\u202fa\u202fprevious\u202fpaper\u202fCollins published<\/a> establishing a framework and theory of systemic psychological insecurity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis work began in large part due to the sociopolitical context and chaos at the federal level in recent years,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen people live in unstable and unpredictable systems,\u202fwe\u2019re\u202funable to\u202fplan for the future and make decisions.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An example of this is to consider the typical college student who is getting a degree in computer science, he said. \u201cIf\u202fthey\u2019ve\u202fput in four years of effort into getting their degree and\u202fall of a sudden, there\u202fare\u202fa ton of layoffs \u2014 which\u202fis happening now in the tech industry \u2014 what does that student do? How does that affect them psychologically?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Environment of genuine collaboration<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In the\u202fongoing\u202fparticipatory action research project, Collins uses university systems as a case study for his framework. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cUniversity students face increasingly unstable conditions related to employment, food access, finances, transportation and evolving academic requirements,\u201d\u202fsaid Uthman, the project manager. \u201cThe project specifically inquires:\u202fWhat does systemic insecurity look like among students, and how do students perceive and navigate university support systems?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The student researchers have conducted 10 interviews and plan to conduct at least 10 more before analyzing their data.\u202fThey will\u202falso be using a survey for\u202fadditional\u202fdata collection. The findings, Uthman noted, have the\u202fpotential to inform successive university policies, improve support\u202fsystems\u202fand cultivate interdisciplinary conversations about student well-being in unstable social contexts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Uthman and three other student researchers\u202f\u2014\u202fYonathan Dagnew, Alastar Diem and\u202fBasil Mayhan\u202f\u2014\u202fpresented on\u202fthe\u202fstudy thus far at the UW\u2019s\u202f2026 Undergraduate Research Symposium.\u202fThe students were also among 27 honorees of the 2026 Population Health Initiative Undergraduate Recognition Award<\/a>, which recognizes projects that demonstrate strong relevance to population health and excellence in both innovation and presentation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their success, Uthman said, was made possible by Collins\u2019 mentorship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDr. Collins has also been exemplary in fostering an environment where undergraduate researchers are treated as genuine collaborators,\u201d she wrote in her nomination letter. \u201cHis guidance has exceeded mere logistical training: He challenges students to think critically about how structural forces shape psychological well-being while encouraging both rigor and social responsibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A shared sense of ownership<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In his research and mentorship, Collins\u202fsaid he is passionate about creating projects that are designed for students, by students. It is important to him that student\u202fmentees serve as partners in the shared research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u202fbring\u202fmy expertise in social and psychological research and methodology, but they are the experts in their lived experience,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
