{"id":34037,"date":"2026-06-05T11:14:09","date_gmt":"2026-06-05T18:14:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=34037"},"modified":"2026-06-05T12:06:59","modified_gmt":"2026-06-05T19:06:59","slug":"discovery-gives-insight-into-black-holes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2026\/06\/05\/discovery-gives-insight-into-black-holes","title":{"rendered":"Discovery gives insight into black holes\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Researchers at the University of Washington Bothell played a key role in the discovery of the fastest ultraviolet outflow ever\u202fobserved\u202ffrom a supermassive black hole, a finding that offers new insight into how black holes influence the evolution of galaxies.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discovery,\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/doi.org\/10.3847\/1538-4357\/ae5f94__;!!K-Hz7m0Vt54!h0b9CZ8p91qb-o5D389pf9mfiY5ND-WKvC-Gi4sVC-LAUnrsPRbaUHuCGwdbA-BVSqzddS7zrEE$\">published\u202fJune 4\u202fin\u202f\u201cThe Astrophysical Journal,\u201d<\/a>\u202fincludes contributions from\u202fDr. Paola Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo, associate\u202fprofessor\u202fin\u202fthe&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/stem\/\">School of STEM<\/a>, and Liliana Flores&nbsp;(Physics \u201905),&nbsp;a\u202fformer\u202fundergraduate researcher\u202fwho worked alongside an international team of astronomers studying a distant quasar known as J2318.\u202fThe team was led by researchers at York University in Toronto.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The quasar hosts a black hole approximately 1.7 billion times the mass of the Sun and generates\u202fa powerful wind at\u202fnearly 30%\u202fof the speed of light \u2014 the fastest ultraviolet quasar outflow ever detected.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese extreme outflows carry incredible amounts of energy that can affect the galaxies around them,\u201d\u202fRodr\u00edguez Hidalgo\u202fsaid.\u202f\u201cThey serve as a sort of missing link between the active central region of a galaxy and the rest of the galaxy. While this process has been included in simulations\u202fof galaxy formation for decades, we still have much to learn from observations.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research highlights the impact undergraduate students can have on\u202fcutting-edge\u202fscientific discoveries. Flores, who conducted research with Rodr\u00edguez Hidalgo\u202fas an&nbsp;undergraduate&nbsp;through&nbsp;the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Faculty and Students Team\u202f(FAST)\u202finitiative, helped analyze the quasar&#8217;s spectrum to measure the speed and strength of the outflow.\u202fFAST&nbsp;supports&nbsp;faculty-student research partnerships and provides undergraduate students with opportunities to contribute directly to astronomical discoveries.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was in charge of fitting the absorption profiles in the quasar spectrum to determine their velocity and equivalent widths,\u201d\u202fFlores said.\u202f\u201cRepeated observations revealed that the amount of absorbed light changes over time. Something in the wind conditions must be changing for that to happen.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discovery\u202femerged\u202ffrom observations gathered through the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, an international collaboration that has mapped the universe for more than two decades.\u202fThe team\u202fwho made this\u202fdiscovery was led by\u202fcolleagues from York University:\u202fDr. Patrick Hall, Faculty of Science;\u202fgraduate student\u202fand lead author\u202fLucas Seaton;\u202fand other members of the\u202fSDSS\u202fcollaboration.\u202f\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBoth Patrick and I have been working together\u202f\u2014\u202fand with undergraduate students\u202f\u2014\u202fthanks to the SDSS Faculty and Students Team initiative that supports these collaborations,\u201d&nbsp;Rodr\u00edguez&nbsp;Hidalgo said.\u202f\u201cPrograms like this allow students to focus on research while&nbsp;completing their undergraduate studies. They form when matter spirals into a supermassive black hole, creating a hot, luminous disk of gas. The intense radiation produced by the disk can drive powerful winds outward at extraordinary speeds.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the case of J2318, the wind reaches velocities of up to 30 percent of the speed of light.
