In a warming world, natural disasters are increasing in both frequency and severity,\u00a0making disaster preparedness more important than ever.\u202fDuring this time of year, those in the Pacific Northwest brace for one hazard in particular: wildfires.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2026 summer outlook\u00a0also\u00a0includes above average temperatures and below average precipitation, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\u2019s Climate Prediction Center. That, paired with lower-than-normal snowpack this winter \u2014\u00a0and Washington has all the makings for significant wildland fire potential.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the season typically picks up in early July,\u00a0there’s\u00a0no better time than the present for Washingtonians to do what they can to prepare, said Dr. Dan Jaffe, professor in the University of Washington Bothell\u2019s\u202fSchool of STEM.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jaffe will share his\u00a0expertise\u00a0on the subject in the Science Pub Talk\u202fat McMenamins Anderson School in downtown Bothell\u202fon June 9.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Air quality research<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Jaffe has taught and studied environmental chemistry and air pollution\u00a0for\u202fnearly 30 years. His work has investigated pollutants \u2014 from ozone and mercury to aerosols and particulate matter \u2014 and their sources, such as fossil fuels and, of course, wildfires.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"A<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

He expanded his work during the 2018 wildfire season\u00a0to include indoor air pollution<\/a> when he discovered that the air quality indoors was often as bad, or even worse, than outside. He became interested in how best to improve and protect air quality at home and in other indoor environments.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the last 10 years, the amount of smoke that the Pacific Northwest has received has gone up dramatically,\u201d he said. \u201cIn the beginning, we could all say \u2018I was caught by surprise. Who knew we could have such horrible smoke?\u2019 But we\u202fcan\u2019t\u202fsay that anymore.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wish the climate\u202fwasn\u2019t\u202fchanging as fast as it is, but there are greater forces at play here. It\u2019s\u202fa global issue,\u00a0and we can expect it to get\u00a0worse\u00a0so it really behooves everyone to think about wildfire preparedness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impacts to health<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Much of his research has focused on the environmental impacts of air pollution, but Jaffe has recently begun examining where human health fits into the picture, too. His\u202flatest paper<\/a>\u202flooks at both the health and regulatory impacts of particulate matter from wildfires.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With funding support from both NOAA and NASA, Jaffe and his research team used surface observations to identify the smokiest regions in the United States. They then compared that data with emergency department visits to estimate how many daily visits for asthma were due to smoke. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

People most often associate wildfires with the Western region\u00a0of\u00a0the U.S., but the impacts from smoke are widespread and have\u00a0the potential to affect all corners of the country. The team found that while rural areas in the West have the highest concentrations of smoke, larger metropolitan areas saw more smoke-related emergency department visits in absolute numbers.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This research emphasizes that everyone can\u202fbenefit\u202ffrom taking precautions ahead of wildfire season, Jaffe said, adding, \u201cIf you wait until we get a bad smoke event, you\u2019ll\u202fbe out of luck when you try to buy an air filter. So,\u202fplan ahead\u202fnow to prepare for wildfire smoke.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Home air purification<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to preparedness, Jaffe noted that home air filters are the most important tool\u202f\u2014 and a more accessible option\u202fthan one might think.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the past several years, we\u2019ve done a lot of research on indoor air and studying how effective different filtration methods are,\u201d he said. \u201cOne thing we found is that a decent air filter might cost $200, but you can also make one yourself for $40 that\u2019s\u202falmost as\u202fgood. Cost shouldn\u2019t\u202fbe a deterrent.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jaffe details how to make a low-cost air purifier using a box fan and a MERV 13 filter\u202fon his website<\/a>. Not only is this\u202foption\u202fcheaper, but it also\u202feliminates\u202fthe need to choose between staying cool or having clean air on\u202fhot summer nights. He noted that unlike other air purifiers, a box fan purifier can sit in the window to help bring in cool, filtered air. Heat pumps are also a great long-term solution that many people are opting for, he noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being prepared also requires staying informed.\u00a0For\u00a0real-time data,\u00a0Jaffe recommends people visit the AirNow Fire and Smoke Map<\/a>, developed by the UW, the Environmental Protection\u202fAgency\u202fand the U.S. Forest Service. And for the latest forecasts on where there will be smoke tomorrow, he advises people visit NOAA\u2019s High-Resolution Rapid Refresh Model<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The need to prepare now<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can\u2019t promise it\u2019s going to be a good or a bad fire season, but right now the dice\u202fare\u202freally loaded for a bad season,\u201d Jaffe\u00a0said. \u201cWe\u2019re\u202fgoing into\u202fa very strong El\u202fNi\u00f1o\u202fand we had a record low snowpack, which means that fuel that normally wouldn\u2019t\u202fstart drying out until mid-summer is already dry now \u2014 giving us a two-month head start on our fire season.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe time to get prepared for wildfire smoke is now.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n
