Each year, the University of Washington Bothell hosts the Student Academic Showcase as a platform for students to share their achievements and raise awareness on diverse topics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fourth annual event\u00a0held\u00a0May 12-14\u00a0featured oral and poster presentations covering issues ranging\u202ffrom climate change and artificial intelligence to mental health and systemic inequalities.\u00a0Nearly 200\u202fstudents presented on more than 100 projects representing areas of study across all five schools at UW Bothell.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In their research and capstones, students applied their education to innovative solutions to some of the most pressing\u202fmatters\u202fof today \u2014 through projects such as \u201cPromoting the Power of Social Connection for Suicide Prevention\u201d and \u201cPlanning for ecology and cultural resilience in Karamoja, Northeastern\u202fUganda.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Urban tree canopies for public health<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sophia Palmer, a graduate student majoring in Community Health & Social Justice, presented her capstone project, \u201cUrban Tree Canopy Program and Planning for Snohomish County Health Department.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was especially drawn to this project because of my interest in the intersection of urban planning, environmental health and health equity,\u201d Palmer said. \u201cI was particularly excited by the opportunity to explore how urban tree canopy can function as a form of public health infrastructure and how environmental design choices can directly impact community health and environmental justice.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her role in the project was to research literature on the planning and public health impacts of urban tree canopies, and\u00a0then\u00a0to translate her findings into practical insights for the county. Tree canopies support health outcomes by reducing heat exposure and environmental stress. They also have noted benefits to mental and emotional well-being.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis project has helped me bridge theory with applied public health practices and better understand how policy and planning decisions shape health at the population level,\u201d Palmer said. \u201cThere is strong longevity in this work, as the topic of urban tree canopy and its connection to public health is becoming increasingly relevant each year\u00a0\u2014 especially as climate and environmental health concerns continue to grow.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impacts of AI on entry-level jobs<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Many of the students who present at the showcase also\u202fexhibit\u202ftheir work at the\u00a0UW\u2019s\u00a0annual Undergraduate Research Symposium in Seattle. At both of this year\u2019s events, Mario Thom\u00e1s Linares Escobar presented his capstone,\u00a0\u201cAI Influence on\u202fEntry\u2011Level\u202fJobs: Risks and Opportunities for Employees and Employers.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the mentorship of Dr. Lakshman Krishna Moorthy, assistant teaching professor\u202fin\u202fUW Bothell\u2019s\u202fSchool of Business<\/a>,\u00a0Linares Escobar\u00a0explored\u00a0the relationship between technological implementation and operational efficiency as it relates to artificial intelligence.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis project supported\u00a0my academic and career goals because it\u00a0furthers\u00a0my academic and regular research skills,\u00a0and helped\u00a0me grow as a researcher,\u201d said\u00a0the\u00a0senior majoring in Business Administration. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt helped me feel more ready for what\u2019s next by giving me the chance to look for information and be able to analyze and make conclusions that lead to the benefit of not just me but those around me, getting me ready for the real work to be done.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Digital choices today affect the future<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Alongside four of her peers, Karen Lopez Garcia presented the project, \u201cIt\u2019s Your Digital Footprint: Shaping Identity, Choices, and Future Opportunities in Middle School Students.\u201d A senior majoring in Developmental &\u202fYouth Studies, Lopez Garcia connected with her local middle school, where the team presented to students to educate them on the impact social media can have on their future.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe wanted students to understand that their digital footprint can affect opportunities later in life while also showing them that social media can be used in positive ways to express who they are, such as athletes, artists, scientists or future teachers,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was meaningful to know that we were working with future generations and helping them think critically about how their choices today can\u202fimpact\u202ffuture opportunities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis project connects to my future goal of working in a school setting as a support counselor or mentor for students,\u201d Lopez Garcia added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The community service and youth mentorship project was facilitated by the Latino Leadership Initiative.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Physiological evolution of fentanyl addiction<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For his research project,\u00a0\u201cIdentifying Physiological Biomarkers of Compulsive Fentanyl-Seeking in Mice,\u201d Shagun Seth worked under the mentorship of Dr. Sam Golden, associate professor in\u00a0the\u00a0UW\u2019s Department of Neurobiology & Biophysics, and his team.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A junior\u00a0at UW Bothell\u00a0majoring in Biology and minoring in Health Studies, Shagun Seth is on a pre-med track. His\u202fobjective\u202fwas to identify the exact biological markers that predict escalating\u00a0fentanyl intake and relapse in mice. The team was able to\u202fdemonstrate\u202fthat the continuous bodily data could be reliably integrated with behavioral observations to establish baseline biomarkers in real-time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI joined the Golden Lab because of my strong interest in neuroscience,\u201d Seth said. \u201cAs a pre-med Biology major, gaining firsthand experience with complex data analysis and understanding the baseline physiology of biological models is directly relevant to my goal of attending medical school. It reinforced my understanding of how underlying physiological data connects to observable behaviors, which is core to patient care.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He presented his project at both the\u00a0UW\u00a0symposium and the\u00a0UW Bothell showcase. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

An innovative way to reduce food waste<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Timothy Caole,\u00a0a\u00a0graduate student majoring in Electrical & Computer Engineering, came to\u00a0his\u00a0project\u00a0\u201cReducing Food Waste Through a Mobile Surplus Food Platform\u201d through his role as an engagement manager in the Bothell Consulting Association, a student-led club where students work on consulting projects with local businesses.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a team,\u202fCaole\u202fand five other students provided their consulting services to iFoodBee, a Seattle-based online marketplace where food businesses can reduce food waste and bring in\u202fadditional\u202fprofit by selling their surplus directly to consumers at a discount.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat made me interested in this work was the real-world impact,\u201d Caole\u202fsaid. \u201cConsultants primarily work on the research, present their\u202ffindings\u202fand recommend action plans for their specific problem. In our case, we\u202fhave the opportunity to\u202fimpact\u202four community by helping build a system that would make food affordable and reduce food waste.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team provided a market analysis for the Bothell region and identified opportunities for growth, such as increasing merchant outreach to local stores.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Events\u202fsuch as\u202fUW Bothell\u2019s annual Academic Showcase are an opportunity to honor not only student contributions to research but also the support of the mentors who make it possible.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, the Office of Connected Learning\u202f\u2014 through the generous support of\u202fDr. Kenyon Chan, former UW Bothell chancellor, and his wife, Dr. Shirley Yune \u2014 presented new awards to mentors who encouraged students to present,\u202fparticipated\u202fas a moderator or evaluator, and\/or brought\u00a0their class or\u00a0a student cohort to the event.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Amy Lambert (School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences)<\/a>\u202freceived an Exceptional Mentor award. Distinguished Mentor\u00a0honorees\u00a0include Dr. Caleb Trujillo (IAS), Dr.\u00a0Xiahua\u00a0Wei (School of Business<\/a>), Dr. Cinnamon Hillyard (IAS), Dr. Julie Shayne (IAS)\u202fand\u202fDr. Subramanian Ramachandran (School of STEM<\/a>).\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
