{"id":33996,"date":"2026-05-28T10:13:59","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T17:13:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=33996"},"modified":"2026-05-28T10:21:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-28T17:21:17","slug":"a-twice-exceptional-standout-among-faculty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2026\/05\/28\/a-twice-exceptional-standout-among-faculty","title":{"rendered":"A twice exceptional standout among faculty\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">\u202fFor more than a decade, Dr. Nora Kenworthy has shared her\u202fexpertise\u202fin public health through her research and teaching as a professor at the University of Washington Bothell\u2019s\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/nhs\/\">School of Nursing &amp; Health Studies<\/a>. Her work examines how social, political,\u202ftechnological\u202fand cultural forces shape the health of patients and populations.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenworthy\u2019s research has had\u202fconsiderable\u202fimpact \u2014 shaping publicly engaged conversations about healthcare, politics,\u202frights\u202fand inequities across diverse global settings. Her efforts in this area haven\u2019t gone unnoticed.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, she was named the recipient of not one but two different university accolades: the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/academic-affairs\/awards\/drsca#:~:text=The%20DRSCA%20is%20presented%20each,the%20University%20of%20Washington%20Bothell.\">Distinguished Research, Scholarship &amp; Creative Activities Award<\/a>\u202fand the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/chancellor\/awards\/outstanding-public-service-award\/\">Outstanding Public Service Award<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a scholar trained in interdisciplinary research, I have found a particularly productive home for cross- and inter-disciplinary work at UW Bothell,\u201d Kenworthy said. \u201cSometimes it\u2019s hard to draw a line between where the scholarship ends and community and public service begins, especially in this time when public health faces so many challenges, and our partnerships with the public are all the more important.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Distinction for scholarly contributions<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Each year, the Distinguished Research, Scholarship &amp; Activity Award is presented to a faculty member in recognition of scholarly or creative achievement exemplifying the standards of excellence required by the research-intensive education environment of UW Bothell.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenworthy\u2019s research first began in the global domain while completing a doctorate in Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University  n 2013. Her dissertation covered the socio-political impacts of HIV interventions in Lesotho. As she said, \u201cI really cut my teeth as a public health worker and researcher in a deeply political context during a time of HIV denialism in South Africa.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She further developed her dissertation research and later published her first book, \u201cMistreated: The Political Consequences of the Fight Against AIDS in Lesotho.\u201d Her more recent investigations have hit\u202fcloser to\u202fhome, with a particular focus on the political aftermath of the pandemic in the U.S. and how it changed people\u2019s choices around their health and the health of their communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI really see my work in the U.S. as a global health project,\u201d she said. \u201cThe U.S. shapes a lot of the&nbsp;world\u2019s&nbsp;economic, technological and health realities, and so we have global impacts. But also, we are a country with a lot of global health problems and health inequalities, with a lot of health statistics that look more like those of lower- and middle-income countries than our high-income country peers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA global health view of the United States right now can help us to better understand what\u2019s going on \u2014 and hopefully, how we can do better.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2024, Kenworthy published her second book, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2024\/05\/24\/the-unseen-layers-of-medical-crowdfunding\">Crowded Out: The True Costs of Crowdfunding Healthcare,<\/a>\u201d which recently won the inaugural Procedure Award. The award honors imaginative books that challenge conventional medical narratives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Dedication to public service<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In alignment with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/about\/community-engagement\">Carnegie Foundation\u2019s purpose of community engagement<\/a>, UW Bothell&#8217;s Outstanding Public Service Award recognizes staff and faculty service that addresses\u00a0critical societal issues,\u00a0contributes\u00a0to an engaged citizenry, strengthens democratic values and civic responsibility,\u00a0and contributes\u00a0to the public good.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Public service is at the heart of Kenworthy\u2019s work as both a scholar and a teacher. Her research both centers on\u00a0and engages with populations that have historically been marginalized in healthcare. It\u00a0has been used by human rights and health justice organizations to advance health.\u202fKenworthy\u2019s investigation into labor conditions for garment workers in Lesotho is an example of this, as it led to a groundbreaking report by the Worker Rights Consortium, which contributed to improved workers\u2019 rights.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In her latest research,\u00a0she\u00a0has\u00a0been working with disability communities across the U.S. to develop community-based concepts of digital health,\u202fsafety\u202fand care.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenworthy also brings her commitment to public service into the classroom\u00a0through partnerships with healthcare organizations both close to campus and around the globe. These partnerships offer mutually beneficial learning opportunities \u2014 as was the case\u00a0in 2023\u00a0with a Collaborative Online International Learning partnership with Pravah, a youth empowerment nonprofit in India.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u202forganization\u202fwas looking to learn more about youth mental health and peer-to-peer training resources.&nbsp;Pravah trained students in&nbsp;its&nbsp;model of civic empowerment, and then the students developed accessible and adaptable peer-led mental health first aid resources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of students in the class were youth who were also dealing with their own mental health crises and fallout from the pandemic, and in the process of coming up with these materials, they also learned a lot that they went on to implement in their own lives and in their communities,\u201d Kenworthy said. \u201cI think it was a really beautiful example of how the global-to-local connection can happen for students through these types of courses.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An extraordinary collaborator<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This past year, Kenworthy also stepped outside the world of academia in her community-engaged work as the co-host of \u201cIn the Meanwhile,\u201d a podcast exploring how everyday people can continue to be civically engaged at a time of multiple crises.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe name of the podcast is based on the idea that we\u202fhave to\u202ffigure out what to do with our lives \u2018in the meanwhile,\u2019 while we\u2019re waiting for a better world to come about,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re\u00a0all trying to figure out how to make these micro-decisions about how we live our lives and try to be ethical in a deeply unethical world. We wanted to have a podcast that sits in that space alongside people who are trying to do that every week.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the podcast, she and\u202fMarcus Harrison Green, her co-host and the founder and publisher of the South Seattle Emerald, interview guests ranging from community organizers and activists to scholars and politicians. One of Kenworthy\u2019s favorite guests so far was Katie Wilson, then mayoral candidate and\u00a0now the\u00a0mayor of Seattle.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat distinguishes Nora most is the spirit she brings to this work: one of humility, curiosity and care,\u201d wrote Green in his letter recommending Kenworthy for the Outstanding Public Service Award. \u201cShe\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0enter communities as an expert but as a partner and listener. That ethos has infused \u2018In\u00a0the\u00a0Meanwhile\u2019 and\u202fall of\u202four collaborations, reminding both of us \u2014 and our audiences \u2014 that scholarship and storytelling can be acts of public service when they center humanity.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNora has been an extraordinary collaborator.\u202fFor her tireless commitment to bridging the&nbsp;University and the community, and for her profound contributions to public understanding and civic life, I can think of no one more deserving of this recognition.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;What distinguishes Nora most is the spirit she brings to this work: one of humility,\u202fcuriosity\u202fand care. She\u202fdoesn\u2019t\u202fenter communities as an expert but as a partner and listener.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Marcus Harrison Green, founder and publisher of the South Seattle Emerald&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The freedom to be boundless<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Kenworthy said that one vital\u202fcomponent\u202fthat makes her work possible is the institutional support she receives from UW Bothell.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are many places that don\u2019t value this kind of interdisciplinary, community-oriented and politically active work,\u201d she said. \u201cI&#8217;m\u00a0really grateful\u202fto have a place like UW Bothell where this work is not only valued but encouraged.
