As a middle school teacher in Oregon, something didn\u2019t sit right with Dr. Jason Naranjo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u00a0saw quickly that there was a whole group of students regularly excluded from meaningful opportunities to learn because they were labeled with disabilities,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he shared his concerns with colleagues, they brushed him off \u2014 delivering services to those kids was someone else\u2019s problem.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat was wholly unacceptable to me,\u201d said Naranjo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His determination to serve\u00a0all<\/em>\u00a0students eventually\u00a0led\u00a0him to\u00a0the University of Washington Bothell\u2019s School of Educational Studies<\/a>, where he is now associate teaching professor.\u00a0And for his ongoing efforts to expand inclusion for people with disabilities, Naranjo has received UW Bothell’s 2026 Outstanding Community-Engaged Scholar Award<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe view our communities as essential both\u00a0in\u00a0knowledge creation and in teaching and learning,\u201d\u00a0he said of UW Bothell\u2019s approach.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s co-construction and co-implementation of these kinds of projects that the University provides space for.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An in-demand endorsement<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Naranjo\u00a0arrived at UW Bothell in 2012 with a mission:\u00a0Develop\u00a0an inclusive program to equip new teachers with a dual endorsement in both general and special education.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBeing\u00a0able to serve the most vulnerable students depends on our ability to meet their needs,\u201d he said. \u201cBut most educators don\u2019t get that training at the university level, so they\u2019re unable to do it in depth and do it well.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Naranjo started at UW Bothell, he said, it offered a single,\u00a0two-credit course in special education studies. Today, the School of Educational Studies is home to a full-fledged dual-endorsement program, preparing students to meet the needs of a diverse range of learners.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot many places in the country do what we do,\u201d said Naranjo, who built the program from the ground up. As its founding faculty member, he did everything from drafting the state license to building the curriculum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naranjo tells his students,\u00a0\u201cYou\u00a0hold something\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0so important \u2014 deep care for children and families, and also\u00a0for people with disabilities. And you can do something about that. I can help you deliver on that promise.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most school districts around the country face a pronounced shortage of special education teachers, and the UW Bothell dual endorsement is in high demand. \u201cOur students are in a unique position in the job market,\u201d Naranjo said.\u00a0\u201cThey can choose where they want to go and teach.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Student-inspired partnership<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Naranjo\u2019s courses\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0solely for would-be educators. A wide cross-section of UW students from\u00a0both the\u00a0Bothell and Seattle campuses enroll in his \u201cDisability & Society\u201d classes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMost\u00a0people\u2019s concepts about disability are deficit-based,\u201d said Naranjo. \u201cThey\u2019re blown away by what they learn.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So blown away, in fact, that students began asking for opportunities\u00a0to get directly involved with the disabled community. Naranjo immediately thought of Outdoors for All, the West Coast\u2019s largest provider of outdoor recreation programs for people with disabilities. An avid skier, he had already been volunteering with the nonprofit organization for four years when he approached its leadership about partnering\u00a0with UW Bothell.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thought, wow, there\u2019s such deep mission alignment between what we do at UW Bothell and what\u2019s going on at OfA,\u201d said Naranjo. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

On campus, he was also advocating for community-engaged scholarship through faculty governance. Working with colleagues, Naranjo helped to secure\u00a0UW Bothell\u2019s first designation as a\u00a0community-engaged campus from the Carnegie Foundation in 2020<\/a>.\u00a0The campus, along with the University of Washington in Seattle and UW Tacoma, earlier this year again received the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outdoor joy for all<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0partnership\u00a0between the\u00a0UW\u00a0and\u00a0Outdoors for All partnership continues to\u00a0blossom through Naranjo\u2019s course,\u00a0\u201cDisability & Society: A Focus on Community and the Outdoors.\u201d In summer and winter quarters, students volunteer with Outdoors for All in a wide range of roles: drivers, equipment managers, ski and snowboard coaches, adaptive cycling coaches, paddleboard coaches and\u00a0more.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe\u00a0class gets students out\u00a0in\u00a0the world and helps make access real,\u201d said Naranjo.\u00a0\u201cIt\u2019s\u00a0a direct opportunity to learn with and from people with disabilities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s pure joy,\u201d he added, \u201cso much fun to teach!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When not outdoors, students are immersed in contemporary text and media that center the disability experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr.\u00a0Keith Nitta, associate professor\u00a0in\u00a0the\u00a0School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences<\/a>, called out Naranjo\u2019s work with Outdoors for All as an exemplar of community-engaged teaching and service. \u201cIt is\u00a0a model of reciprocity, with clear benefits for Outdoors for All and\u00a0for\u00a0the UW,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cI am so impressed with the class that I used it as a model in a public lecture in Japan last year.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the class ends, many students continue to volunteer with Outdoors for All, expanding its mission and putting outdoor recreation in reach for\u00a0even\u00a0more people.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Civic engagement redefined<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of those returning volunteers is Zainb Ali, who received her bachelor\u2019s in Public Health-Global Health from the UW in Seattle in 2023. \u201cWhat began as a class requirement grew into an ongoing commitment to supporting accessible recreation in my community,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She also raved about the course as one of the most meaningful and transformative learning experiences of her time at UW.\u00a0\u201cIt challenged the way I see the world, expanded my understanding\u00a0of accessibility and shaped the values I want to carry forward in my career and community work,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ali\u2019s\u00a0expanded\u00a0understanding is exactly the kind of insight Naranjo hopes to spark in his students, no matter what draws\u00a0them to enroll.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese courses change the way students see themselves as citizens in a democracy,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cThey understand civic engagement as different than\u00a0\u2018I\u2019m just showing up to help someone.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
