In any given\u00a0enrollment period at\u00a0the University of Washington Bothell, students can choose among dozens of community-engaged learning and research opportunities. From STEM to disability justice, each class features hands-on\u00a0partnership with organizations and people across Puget Sound.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do\u00a0faculty connect with the right\u00a0community\u00a0partners\u00a0in the first place? And how do they build strong, enduring relationships with them? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enter Dana Washington,\u00a0community-engaged learning program manager in the Office of Connected Learning.\u00a0Each year, she supports the University\u2019s\u00a0more than 100 community partners and collaborates with faculty across\u00a0all\u00a0five schools\u00a0and first-year programs. The shared goal: provide meaningful\u00a0opportunities for students\u00a0to address real-world challenges.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI like to say my core values are creativity, connection and community,\u201d said Washington. \u201cI\u2019m a lovely little connector.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For her\u00a0efforts to expand\u00a0and deepen\u00a0UW Bothell\u2019s community partnerships and\u00a0learning opportunities, Washington has been awarded Distinguished Accomplishments Award\u00a0for 2025-26.\u00a0The award was\u00a0established\u00a0in 2021 by the Division of Academic Affairs to recognize staff members who have bolstered the division and propelled the academic mission of the campus forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For students and partners<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Washington\u2019s\u00a0role,\u00a0which she\u00a0began\u00a0in 2023,\u00a0encompasses far more than shepherding students through registration, organizing site visits and managing logistics. She works directly with faculty to help design learning experiences and generate\u00a0reciprocal\u00a0opportunities for students and community members.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI sync up the faculty mission and the community partner\u2019s mission,\u201d Washington said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Case in point:\u00a0Her\u00a0work\u00a0with\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Maureen West,\u00a0an associate teaching professor who leads\u00a0classes on disability justice and representation\u00a0in the\u00a0School of Nursing &\u00a0Health Studies<\/a>. The established partner\u00a0for these\u00a0courses\u00a0is the Alyssa Burnett Adult Life Center, which offers lifelong learning and social skills programs for adults with autism and developmental\u00a0disabilities.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDana has been a co-architect of a learning experience that centers disability justice as both theory and practice,\u201d West\u00a0said. \u201cOver multiple quarters, she has helped shape a curriculum that foregrounds student agency, community voice and collective care.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As\u00a0evidence\u00a0of Washington\u2019s far-reaching impact,\u00a0West\u00a0called out a winter 2024 campuswide\u00a0art exhibition\u00a0that Washington helped conceive and execute.\u00a0As the culmination of \u201cThe Art and Practice of Disability Justice\u201d class, the event\u00a0brought together students and\u00a0the center\u2019s clients to show\u00a0multimedia projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDana\u2019s sustained contributions over the past several years reflect a rare combination of strategic vision and day-to-day excellence,\u201d West said. \u201cHer responsiveness, warmth and precision have made her a trusted resource for students, faculty and community partners alike.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A cohort of leaders<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Just a few months into her\u00a0OCL\u00a0position,\u00a0Washington took on facilitation of the Latino Leadership Initiative<\/a>, a campus\u00a0cohort and advocacy\u00a0group focused on civic engagement\u00a0and service. Under her guidance, the\u00a0cohort has implemented several service projects: a Latino mentorship program at Bothell High School, a \u201cKnow Your Rights\u201d training for immigrant community members and\u00a0UW Bothell\u2019s first-ever Latino Culture Night.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cohort has\u00a0also\u00a0grown from 10 participants to 30\u00a0over the past few years\u00a0\u2014 and\u00a0Rosario Reyes, executive director of\u00a0the Latino Educational Training Institute (which\u00a0developed\u00a0the LLI curriculum), credits Washington with the\u00a0robust participation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDana\u2019s communication and leadership skills have helped not only find new students but\u00a0also\u00a0build a dedicated group of leaders who want to continue supporting this program,\u201d Reyes\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cThanks to her relationships, communication and collaboration, we have the strongest cohorts that we have seen in the 13 years of this program\u2019s existence.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington\u2019s impact\u00a0even\u00a0extends to all three\u00a0of the UW\u2019s campuses. Last year, she\u00a0began working with the Community Connect UW platform, a tri-campus system for matching community partners and UW constituents. She was one of the first staff members to pilot the platform, supporting eight courses\u00a0over two quarters.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe has envisioned and implemented novel ways to leverage the technology to better serve students and community partners, positioning herself as a trailblazer in this space,\u201d said Jesi Egan, director of research and creative projects for undergraduates at UW Bothell.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A creative trailblazer<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Washington\u00a0currently\u00a0leads\u00a0trainings\u00a0for this and other UW programs that connect with hundreds of students.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She said her\u00a0background as a nonprofit educator \u2014 including positions with the YMCA, AmeriCorps and Seattle Public Schools \u2014 set\u00a0her up for success at UW Bothell.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just as salient: the creativity she brings to her work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
