An\u00a0historian\u00a0and\u00a0cross-campus connector.\u00a0Elections manager\u00a0and diplomat.\u00a0A\u00a0budget manager, website wrangler and administrator nonpareil.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the\u00a0program\u00a0coordinator\u00a0for\u00a0the University of Washington Bothell\u2019s General Faculty Organization<\/a>, Dawn Moncalieri is all these things\u00a0and more,\u00a0rolled into\u00a0a department of one.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has also now\u00a0received the\u00a0Distinguished Partner Award\u00a0for 2025-26\u00a0for\u00a0her outstanding service to the GFO and the larger UW community. The award was established\u202fin 2021 by the Division of Academic Affairs to recognize staff members who have bolstered the division and propelled the academic mission of the campus forward.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was shocked and\u00a0flattered\u00a0to receive\u00a0it,\u201d Moncalieri\u00a0said. \u201cAs an office of one, I often work independently,\u00a0so this award made me reflect on how that work contributes to broader partnerships.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been really rewarding, and I\u2019m proud of the connections I\u2019ve been able to make.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the faculty<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Moncalieri\u00a0began\u00a0in her current\u00a0role in 2020\u00a0and has since worked consistently to shine a light on the GFO, the governing body that ensures voting\u00a0UW Bothell faculty have a voice\u00a0\u2014\u00a0as established in UW faculty code\u00a0\u2014\u00a0in\u00a0a variety of matters including curriculum design, budgeting, and tenure and promotion.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because\u00a0the\u00a0GFO\u00a0has a\u00a0rotating\u00a0leadership\u00a0structure,\u00a0she also\u00a0reports to a new supervisor each year,\u00a0each year onboarding\u00a0not just the\u00a0GFO officers\u00a0but\u00a0a host of\u00a0other\u00a0faculty leaders\u00a0who serve\u00a0the GFO, its five councils and associated committees. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Importantly,\u00a0Moncalieri\u00a0serves as\u00a0the one\u00a0constant\u00a0and the\u00a0keeper of institutional knowledge throughout all these changes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile GFO officers transition in and out of leadership roles, Dawn continues to do an outstanding job of ensuring that key functions of our shared governance structures do not get lost in frequent leadership transitions,\u201d said Dr. Linda Watts, professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences and a former GFO\u00a0chair.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Genius for organization<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Moncalieri\u00a0is only\u00a0the second person\u00a0at UW Bothell\u00a0to hold\u00a0this GFO role, which involves coordinating people, processes,\u00a0events\u00a0and information across all three UW campuses. To\u00a0ensure smooth operations,\u00a0she has established systems to\u00a0streamline and modernize procedures.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She\u00a0also\u00a0takes an \u201cat your fingertips\u201d approach to information management that helps faculty navigate every facet of shared governance.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Need\u00a0a historical document? Wondering how a discussion\u00a0about a\u00a0particular proposal\u00a0went down in 2023? Grappling with a challenging topic?\u00a0Moncalieri is the\u00a0recordkeeper,\u00a0adviser\u00a0and sounding board\u00a0for\u00a0faculty.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWithout Dawn\u2019s steady and respectful way of being, growing and maintaining relationships that forward our collective work would not be possible,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0Jason Naranjo, associate teaching professor in the\u00a0School of Educational Studies and another\u00a0past GFO chair.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grace under pressure<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Besides stellar organizational skills,\u00a0Moncalieri\u00a0wields at least two other superpowers in her role: tact and diplomacy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTimes without number,\u201d Watts\u00a0said, \u201cI have\u00a0witnessed\u00a0the respectfully direct and deft\u00a0manner in which Moncalieri interacts with all GFO stakeholders.\u00a0It takes care and talent to engage with the healthy\u00a0egos\u00a0and strong personalities present on a college campus, and no one does it any better.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moncalieri credits\u00a0her\u00a0stint\u00a0as\u00a0an airman\u00a0in the U.S.\u00a0Air Force with honing this particular skill.\u00a0At age 19,\u00a0an administrator working at\u00a0what was then Europe\u2019s busiest Air Force\u00a0base,\u00a0she was tasked with gatekeeping every proposal destined for her boss\u2019s desk.\u00a0He was a high-ranking officer\u00a0who oversaw all of the base\u2019s fighter squadrons and pilots.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was shaking in my boots,\u201d\u00a0Moncalieri\u00a0said\u00a0of\u00a0the times she had to tell officers \u2014 their lapels crowded with bars and\u00a0stars\u00a0\u2014\u00a0that their paperwork wasn\u2019t up to par.\u00a0\u201cI had to deliver the message professionally but firmly,\u201d she said. \u201cIt taught me a lot at 19 that I carry with me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UW Bothell career<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

At UW Bothell, she\u00a0is in\u00a0something of a\u00a0parallel role, helping faculty stick to agreed-upon processes. But professors are much more collegial, she noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNot a day goes by that I don\u2019t get a big thank-you from someone,\u201d she said. \u201cI feel so privileged to be able to do what I do. I see the high, high value of good faculty.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moncalieri\u2019s enthusiasm for UW Bothell\u00a0began in her\u00a0student days in\u00a0the School of IAS.\u00a0She graduated in\u00a02009 with a bachelor\u2019s degree in Society, Ethics & Human Behavior.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI loved\u00a0and respected\u00a0my\u00a0professors,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0wait to get back to Bothell to support their work.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On staff\u00a0at UW Bothell\u00a0since 2013, Moncalieri\u00a0remains\u00a0their staunch advocate and ally.\u00a0\u201cIf it weren\u2019t for\u00a0good faculty,\u201d she said, \u201cthere wouldn\u2019t be a university.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
