{"id":33937,"date":"2026-05-08T15:12:27","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T22:12:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=33937"},"modified":"2026-05-08T15:18:59","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T22:18:59","slug":"gamifying-learning-work-and-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2026\/05\/08\/gamifying-learning-work-and-life","title":{"rendered":"Gamifying learning,\u202fwork\u202fand life\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">From tabletop and roleplaying to computer games and sports, gaming in all forms has long been a favorite pastime for Dr. Eric Stoerm Anderson.\u202fIt\u2019s\u202fmore than just a hobby, though.\u202fIt\u2019s\u202falso what led him to pursue a career in nursing and later academia, where he now weaves gaming into his teaching.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve always kind of seen the world through a gaming lens,\u201d said Anderson, associate teaching professor in the University of Washington Bothell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/nhs\/\">School of Nursing &amp; Health Studies<\/a>. \u201cI recognized the inherent gameyness in\u00a0the world and that life in general is a sort of game. There are rules,\u00a0and if you can cleverly use those rules to your benefit, you can do well.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his latest course, Anderson explored the utility of games in mental health, education, leadership and professional practice.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A lifelong gamemaster<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Anderson loved playing games with his friends\u00a0when he was young. As he got older, he noticed that many of his friends would stop showing up for games after graduating and entering the workforce. When he began thinking about his own future, he knew he wanted to find\u202fa good job\u202fthat would afford him the money and time off to continue playing.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nursing seemed the right fit, and it\u202fgrew on\u202fhim as he completed a nursing degree. Through this experience, he also fell in love with the world of higher education.\u202fNow, as a teacher, he finds the job of managing a classroom similar to his role as a gamemaster \u2014 the person in roleplaying games who represents the world that the players inhabit and responds to players\u2019 actions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe experience of creating a sandbox for students to play around in is very similar to running a campaign,\u201d he said. \u201cIn role-playing games I\u2019ve run,\u202fI\u2019m\u202finterested in players having more choices. And in that same way, I also want students to have more choices in class.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In winter quarter 2026, Anderson launched 400-level and 500-level versions of the class, \u201cRoleplaying and Strategic Gaming in Mental Health, Education, Leadership and Professional Practice,\u201d which he developed from a 100-level survey course he\u2019d previously taught.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve thought ahead about an entire game curriculum,\u201d he said. \u201cA series of courses that would make for interesting electives and at the same time address more individual interests, allowing&nbsp;students to self-direct into projects and topics that are particularly useful for their own personal and professional development.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Learn to play it out<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The class appealed to seasoned gamers and novices alike, as well as\u00a0students from\u00a0a variety of majors. For Orion Chua, a junior majoring in Global Studies, tabletop roleplaying games have been one of the biggest highlights of his life.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe thing that I enjoyed most about this class was definitely the fact that having fun was an integral part of it,\u201d he said.\u202f\u201cThe class encourages you to go out and play and experience games as opposed to just sitting there writing about theories. I\u202flearned way\u202fmore about history than I expected to learn from this class. We also went really into depth about the fundamentals of game design that I found fascinating.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students not only played games, but they also developed concepts of their own through group projects. In her group, Tamara Sanchez, a graduate student majoring in Nursing, created a game that followed the flow of a patient from admission to discharge and the allocation of resources.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanchez found the emphasis on critical thinking in the class especially valuable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a mother of a neurodivergent but extremely bright child, I recognize that to facilitate her learning I must \u2018step up my game\u2019 as a parent and an educator, and push critical thinking development to be explored, experience and internalized through practice,\u201d she said. \u201cCritical thinking requires navigating challenges like a maze or a game \u2014 where individuals must analyze, adapt and think well beyond conventional approaches. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen learning is meaningful as well as enjoyable,\u201d\u00a0Sanchez\u00a0said, \u201cit becomes more memorable and impactful, helping individuals retain concepts and apply them more effectively in real-world situations that are not cut and dried.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prepare for disease and disasters<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The curriculum explored a variety of gaming genres and styles, including roleplaying games known as \u201cwar games.\u201d While traditionally used to model warfare, war games can be any simulation-based games where players\u2019\u00a0decisions affect the outcome against an adversary \u2014 whether the opponent is another player, representing\u202fa nation or even a disease.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the real world, war games also appear as tabletop exercises that simulate these same scenarios \u2014 from a major earthquake to a global pandemic. These exercises play a valuable role in helping to understand human decision-making and response to disasters, and to better prepare responders to act.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alivia Spiess, a junior majoring in Health Studies,\u00a0said\u00a0the tabletop boardgame \u201cPandemic\u201d taught her how to navigate unpredictability within a stressful environment.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was not expecting to learn how these games are actively utilized for training purposes and how these games can promote effective disease response,\u201d\u00a0she\u00a0said. \u201cThis course immensely supported my career and academic goals.
