According to the World Meteorological Organization, 2024 was the warmest year ever recorded. In WMO\u2019s latest report, however, 2025 saw a\u00a0new,\u00a0even more concerning high in Earth\u2019s energy imbalance: the difference between incoming sunlight and the radiation that is reflected and emitted back from Earth.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This metric is considered one of the most accurate indicators of climate change, and it has more than doubled in recent years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The widespread impacts of this imbalance are being felt across the world already, impacting everyone, but young people are especially vulnerable. As\u00a0those\u00a0most likely to experience extreme climate events during their lifetime, younger generations are feeling\u00a0the\u00a0burden, and it\u00a0has already taken a toll. Many youth\u00a0under the age of 25 \u2014 including children as young as preschool age \u2014 report having climate anxiety\u00a0as well as\u00a0fear and hopelessness for the future.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Younger people\u00a0also\u00a0tend to be the most engaged in climate activism. And at the University of Washington Bothell, students now have a new opportunity to channel their passion for climate issues into their personal, academic and career goals through the recently launched minor in Climate Change & Society<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A collaborative effort<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Climate change affects all areas of life and society \u2014 posing existential risks to ecological, economic and social systems on local, national\u00a0and global scales. That\u2019s why it makes sense that climate themes can be found across all five of UW Bothell\u2019s schools.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faculty have been incorporating climate curriculum into their classes since\u00a0UW Bothell was founded\u00a0more than 35 years ago. But just a\u00a0few years ago, a group of faculty banded together to consider how they might expand on\u00a0this work to offer a focused academic\u00a0minor.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cClimate change is\u00a0impacting our world enormously \u2014 and will only increase its impact \u2014\u00a0so how can we engage to address this was really our guiding question,\u201d said Dr. Martha Groom, professor in the\u00a0School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences<\/a>. \u201cWe wanted to have more options and coursework to allow students to really dig into climate issues more deeply.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the faculty members leading the conversation, Groom said the minor came together as a collaborative effort with the intention of developing a curriculum that could complement any academic major. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

And\u00a0while faculty\u00a0have\u00a0incorporated\u00a0climate curriculum\u00a0in their classes\u00a0out of their own interest for the subject,\u00a0they\u00a0also\u00a0do so as part of a teaching philosophy that centers the needs and voices of their students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faculty polled students on what issues were most important to them, Groom\u00a0said, noting that\u00a0student voices and perspectives were instrumental to\u00a0launching\u00a0the new minor.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From student interest<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not surprisingly, the Alliance 4 Sustainability student club supported the new minor\u2019s creation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current A4S president, Cisco Jimenez, was a member of the club during that time and helped organize an event for students to provide input.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis minor will help engage more students in the bigger fight against climate change,\u201d said Jimenez, a senior majoring in Environmental Studies who is also pursuing the new minor. \u201cMy hope is that this minor will help inspire students from all majors and fields to think about their role in the fight against climate change so that we can work together to make a difference.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shahrzad Tehrani, campus sustainability coordinator and adviser to A4S, helped facilitate student and faculty discussions and organize town hall meetings.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSomething many of us on campus are working on is demonstrating that sustainability is relevant to everyone,\u00a0not only students in traditionally \u2018environmental\u2019 majors,\u201d Tehrani said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Climate Change & Society minor supports campus sustainability by creating an accessible pathway for students from any discipline to develop sustainability knowledge and skills they can apply on campus \u2014\u00a0and in their future careers.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“There are so many ways our faculty and students are engaging substantively in work that matters and improves the lives for the people who live here. And that ethos is really central to who we are at UW Bothell.”<\/p>Dr. Martha Groom, professor, School of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences <\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

For every major<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Spring 2026 marks the first quarter that students can graduate with the minor.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The minor includes core courses that introduce scientific, social, political, health and economic dimensions of climate change. Students enrolled in the minor receive foundational training to support their understanding of these various dimensions, as well as fundamentals in environmental and social justice.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe tried to build it out so that you could be a student from anywhere on campus and have some connection to your degree,\u201d Groom\u00a0said.\u00a0So far, she\u00a0has already heard from students in a variety of programs \u2014 from students majoring in Conservation & Restoration Science thinking about how to do restoration work in a changing climate to Media & Communication Studies students interested in helping the broader public engage in, prepare for and adapt to climate change.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As many of the\u00a0new\u00a0minor\u2019s\u00a0courses\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0require prerequisites, students who are\u00a0not sure if they want to commit to the full minor are welcome to select classes that suit their academic and career interests. Some classes, such as \u201cClimate Anxiety, Grief and Resilience,\u201d also appeal to students on a\u00a0more\u00a0personal level \u2014 helping them to move from feelings of despair to actionable solutions.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Local and global<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s really typical of our campus to focus on what we can do for good right here and now,\u201d\u00a0Groom\u00a0said. \u201cThere are so many ways our faculty and students are engaging substantively in work that matters and improves the lives for the people who live here. And that ethos is\u00a0really central\u00a0to who we are at UW Bothell.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Students who voiced the desire for more climate curriculum are proof of\u00a0that, and she encourages all students to feel empowered to talk to faculty about incorporating the issues they\u00a0care\u00a0most about\u00a0into\u00a0their classes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe were motivated as faculty to do this full on because we all care about climate change, but it was absolutely huge that students similarly felt it was important,\u201d she said. \u201cUltimately, they push us a lot, and that\u2019s a great part of teaching.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
