{"id":33899,"date":"2026-05-01T10:15:35","date_gmt":"2026-05-01T17:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=33899"},"modified":"2026-05-01T11:24:41","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T18:24:41","slug":"living-lab-capstones-sow-healthy-future-for-local-forest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2026\/05\/01\/living-lab-capstones-sow-healthy-future-for-local-forest","title":{"rendered":"Living-lab capstones sow healthy future for local forest\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Access to nature is one of the&nbsp;main benefits&nbsp;for the people who live in the Pacific Northwest \u2014 as well as those who choose to&nbsp;attend&nbsp;the University of Washington Bothell.&nbsp;In fact,&nbsp;green spaces on campus and&nbsp;nearby often serve as a living laboratory&nbsp;for students to expand their knowledge and skills in environmental sciences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One such space is\u202fHooven\u202fForest. Located just a 15-minute drive from campus, Hooven is a second-growth legacy forest and wetland area featuring more than 180 acres of diverse vegetation and wildlife.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, Hooven&nbsp;was&nbsp;host&nbsp;to&nbsp;the next generation of environmentalists and conservationists&nbsp;from UW Bothell. From water quality testing to invasive species mapping, four students took to the field&nbsp;for&nbsp;their capstone projects, which they presented in\u202fa&nbsp;community event at Crystal Lake Lodge in Woodinville, Washington, last month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat makes Hooven Forest so special is not just the landscape,\u202fit\u2019s\u202fthe people&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;a&nbsp;community that\u2019s come together to care for this place,&nbsp;including a community-built trail system, educational walks, advocacy, stewardship and now a living laboratory for student research,\u201d said Dave Upthegrove, Washington state commissioner of public lands, at the event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I love about these projects is that they take something that we all feel about this forest Sam Low, Dave Upthegrove, Benton Kellogg (Conservation &amp; Restoration Science, &#8217;26), Cisco Jimenez (Environmental Studies, &#8217;26), Snohomish County Councilmember Megan Dunn, Dr. Amy Lambert.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>An inventory of flora and fauna<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hooven Forest is owned and managed by the Washington Department of Natural Resources&nbsp;as part&nbsp;of the state\u2019s efforts to conserve more than\u202f70,000 acres\u202fof public&nbsp;lands.&nbsp;The students\u2019 capstones on the forest were facilitated by&nbsp;Dr. Amy Lambert,&nbsp;associate teaching\u202fprofessor in UW Bothell\u2019s\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/\">School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>, through a&nbsp;partnership with The Friends of Hooven Forest, a nonprofit that aims to protect the area from logging and development.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Knowing what plants and animals are&nbsp;currently&nbsp;present in the forest can be vital in making a case for their preservation. So&nbsp;in their project, Benton Kellogg and Nathan Freeman set out to inventory the various&nbsp;species&nbsp;that call Hooven home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pair&nbsp;divided&nbsp;the forest into sections,&nbsp;sampled&nbsp;23 randomly selected one-acre plots&nbsp;and&nbsp;cataloged&nbsp;35 plant species, 23 bird species, four\u202fmammals\u202fand two amphibians.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI chose the Hooven Forest species inventory project because it involved a lot of field work, and it gave me the chance to design and execute my own research project,\u201d said Kellogg, a senior majoring in Conservation &amp; Restoration Science. \u201cThis project gave me good experience that will be helpful on my resume&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;and even let me share my work with several state Forest\u2019s diverse habitat, while\u202fnot far from\u202furban environments,&nbsp;is part of a much larger wildlife corridor. The forest features towering century-old Douglas\u202ffirs, Western red\u202fcedars\u202fand big leaf maples, as well as large wetland areas and seasonal creeks that attract&nbsp;animals&nbsp;ranging from coyotes and deer to mountain beavers and pileated woodpeckers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many wild spaces, however, Hooven\u202fisn\u2019t\u202fimmune to unwanted inhabitants. In his project, Cisco Jimenez surveyed invasive plant species including Himalayan blackberry, English&nbsp;holly, English&nbsp;ivy, Japanese&nbsp;knotweed\u202fand cherry laurel.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cI am passionate about conservation and restoration, and I see myself as both an environmentalist and a steward of the Earth. This project\u202fstrongly\u202faligned with those values.\u201d<\/p><cite>Cisco Jimenez, senior, Environmental Studies&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am passionate about conservation and restoration, and I see myself as both an environmentalist and a steward of the Earth. This project strongly aligned with those values,\u201d said Jimenez, a senior majoring in Environmental Studies who also plans to minor in Climate Change &amp; Society. \u201cI especially valued the opportunity to explore Hooven Forest and connect with a community deeply committed to protecting their local environment.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through his project, Jimenez mapped a total of 177 sites where invasive species were present \u2014 with English holly and English ivy appearing the most dominant. Right: Kayo Stone, steering committee member for The Friends of Hooven Forest. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tests of&nbsp;water quality<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the center of the forest lies the Hooven Bog and a wetland area marked by seasonal surface creeks and underground water seepage that flows into Crystal Lake and the Bear Creek watershed, which supports salmon. The wetlands, known as peat bogs, are among the most pristine of their kind in the state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adam Ryuki Parker had\u202fprevious\u202fexperience doing field work in water-focused classes and wanted to continue research in this area for his capstone. He tested the water quality as it flowed through Hooven Forest and compared it to water further downstream. He aimed to learn more about how the wetlands contributed to the overall health of the wider watershed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Parker tested various parameters, such as pH and nutrient levels, across six different sites. He found that E. Coli and turbidity levels were especially low throughout the sampling period,\u202findicating\u202ffairly good\u202foverall water quality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m hoping I can continue in a field similar to that of this project\u202fsuch as\u202fsurface water management or monitoring,\u201d said Parker, a senior majoring in Earth System Science and&nbsp;minoring&nbsp;in Data Analytics and Geographic Information Systems. \u201cThis was\u202fa great experience&nbsp;for me.
