{"id":33671,"date":"2026-03-09T21:52:00","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T04:52:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=33671"},"modified":"2026-04-09T22:33:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-10T05:33:04","slug":"channeling-love-and-loss-into-health-equity-for-all","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2026\/03\/09\/channeling-love-and-loss-into-health-equity-for-all","title":{"rendered":"Channeling love and loss into health equity for\u00a0all\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">On Oct. 13, 2018, LaNiqua Bell gave birth to a baby boy named Kyren. He was healthy and beautiful, and he had her same \u201cfluffy\u201d cheeks, she said.\u202f\u201cHe was perfect.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When he was 7 months old, Kyren caught a cold. Bell took him to a hospital but they were transferred to another. At the second hospital, they stayed for hours but were later discharged \u2014 despite her objections. She brought him in again later that same day, but her concerns were again dismissed, she said. Left untreated, his symptoms worsened. He died less than a day\u202fafter\u202fthe third visit.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unimaginable loss of her infant son was overwhelming. What made it even more difficult to heal was reflecting back on the way she and her son had been treated. Bell felt that Kyren\u2019s death\u202fwouldn\u2019t\u202fhave happened if not for systemic racism in U.S. health care. She was left with unanswered questions and no resolution.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a terrible experience, and I needed to figure out what had happened,\u201d she said. \u201cI needed to know how we got to a world where \u2018all\u2019\u202fdoesn\u2019t\u202fmean\u202f<em>all<\/em>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her search for answers led her to the University of\u202fWashington\u202fBothell. Now, as a graduate student in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/nhs\/graduate\/ms-community-health-social-justice\">Community Health &amp; Social Justice master\u2019s program<\/a>, Bell aims to prevent future mothers from suffering the same fate by advocating for equity in health care.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Her life\u2019s work<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in Seattle, Bell was a first-generation student when she completed a\u202fbachelor\u2019s degree in Political Science\u202fwith a pre-law\u202foption\u202fat Eastern Washington University. College was difficult for her, and she said she\u202fwouldn\u2019t\u202fhave made it through if not for the support of her family and her community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"874\" height=\"699\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/03\/Kyren-Bell.jpg\" alt=\"A baby.\" class=\"wp-image-33676\" style=\"width:500px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/03\/Kyren-Bell.jpg 874w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/03\/Kyren-Bell-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/03\/Kyren-Bell-768x614.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/03\/Kyren-Bell-600x480.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 874px) 100vw, 874px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">LaNiqua Bell&#8217;s son, Kyren.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a village that\u2019s continually pulling me up, and I really believe in that&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;and I have a desire to help pull the next person up,\u201d she said. \u201cFrom the beginning, my work has always been about giving access to people who don\u2019t have it and helping to level the playing field.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What came next was not just a career, she\u202fadded,\u202fit was her calling. Through several roles, she found joy in helping other students get into college and\u202fjump-start\u202ftheir careers. Currently, she serves as the access program manager for The Museum of Flight, where she leads programs focused on engaging and supporting students who have been historically underrepresented in STEM.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After her son died, Bell\u00a0also\u00a0wanted to use her skillset to help solve the problem of disproportionate mortality rates among Black infants.\u00a0\u201cCarrying that grief for my son, I have to\u00a0do something about this problem because it\u2019s a part of my peace and my acceptance,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s my life\u2019s work \u2014 my why, my purpose.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aware of Bell\u2019s career aspirations and desire to promote representation in health care, one of her mentors suggested she pursue a master\u2019s degree and sent her information on UW Bothell\u2019s CHSJ\u00a0master\u2019s\u00a0program.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI came to this program not necessarily as a professional looking for a credential to make the change I wanted to see but as a mother first,\u201d Bell said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;What this program has painfully shown me and given me the language to understand is that what happened to us is not a one-off. Black infant mortality is a huge, structural problem.&#8221;<\/p><cite>LaNiqua Bell,\u202fgraduate student, Community Health &amp; Social Justice<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The elephant in the room<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the program, Bell has been able to relate her own experience to what she has learned about the social determinants of health and how inequity shows up in the health care system.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I started this healing journey, I thought that what had happened to us was rare, something that didn\u2019t happen often,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat\u202fthis program has painfully shown me and given me the language to understand is that what happened to us is not\u202fa one-off. Black infant mortality is a huge, structural problem.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Black infants had a 95% higher mortality rate than the national average in 2023. Despite this high number, Bell said\u202fshe\u00a0has\u202falso learned through her classes that data alone is often not enough to shift perspectives. Storytelling and putting a face to\u202fthe numbers\u202fcan be a useful tool, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one class assignment, Bell channeled her grief into a personal essay about Kyren\u2019s death and the larger issue it\u202frepresents.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI titled the article \u2018The Elephant in the Room\u2019 because\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a problem we can all see and agree on, but there\u2019s not enough movement on it,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd because there\u2019s not enough movement on it, I lost my baby.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sharing her story is not something that comes easy to her,\u00a0Bell\u00a0added. She chooses to do it anyway for the purpose of educating and promoting awareness on the issue.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven in writing my story, there is some grief because I did not set out to be an advocate in this way, and I don\u2019t know that I do want to, but I feel that I have to \u2014 like it\u2019s my duty,\u201d she said. \u201cThis article is an observation of what I\u2019m\u202ffeeling and learning in my master\u2019s program, but\u202fit\u2019s\u202falso a call to correct the system.
