A\u00a0University of Washington Bothell\u00a0education\u00a0is in high demand. Last fall saw its largest-ever enrollment, with more than 1,100 first-year students\u00a0pushing\u00a0the total student body beyond 6,300.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThose trends speak a lot to the experiences our students are having and who we attract,\u201d said Dr. Brian Martensen, executive vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. \u201cIt\u2019s clear that people care about students here \u2014 and they care about each other.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Six months after joining UW Bothell<\/a>, Martensen has distilled this essence of the close-knit campus. He is still discovering how best to support what is a still developing and dynamic university. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u00a0said he is\u00a0leaning\u00a0into a three-pronged approach: clear information and analysis, streamlined systems,\u00a0and collaboration.\u00a0\u201cWe do a lot of things right,\u00a0and now it\u2019s a question of how to scale\u00a0them.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0flipside\u00a0of UW Bothell\u2019s growth, noted Martensen, is that\u00a0all\u00a0the\u00a0programs and systems that keep\u00a0the campus humming\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0always keep up, which makes coordinating across five schools, several hundred faculty, hundreds of\u00a0staff\u00a0and\u00a0more than 6,300 students\u00a0much\u00a0more\u00a0complicated.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Collaborating to support a dynamic campus<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

His first order of business: Get the best information to the people who need it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to put the right tools in people\u2019s hands,\u201d Martensen said. \u201cThe faculty and staff know the students well, but can we use data more effectively to coordinate our efforts?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, in some majors, sophomore year presents a critical turning point when students are vulnerable to dropping out. How can UW Bothell better uncover potential obstacles and highlight the need for support?\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGuided by the right data,\u201d Martensen said,\u00a0\u201cwe\u00a0can make targeted investments \u2014 from reducing class sizes where it would be most effective to expanding mentored experiences\u00a0and increasing innovative, high-impact services and resources for students.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This approach will also systematize support\u00a0and simplify processes\u00a0for UW Bothell faculty. The bulk of Martensen\u2019s role,\u00a0in fact, involves coordinating academic affairs with\u00a0each of the five\u00a0school\u00a0deans, plus the Campus Library, Office of Student Academic Success, Office of Faculty\u00a0Success\u00a0and\u00a0Office of Sponsored\u00a0Research.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe want to make the systems easy,\u201d he said, \u201cand make sure the faculty\u2019s work is in the places where they can be most effective and use their expertise.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building on a UW Bothell strength<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With the faculty,\u00a0Martensen is also looking to coordinate and scale the rich roster of\u00a0community engagement<\/a> opportunities for UW Bothell students. These include research\u00a0projects,\u00a0internships, capstones, mentorship opportunities, study abroad and career connections \u2014 a full range of offerings to fit the needs of a diverse student body.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet with the systems\u00a0now\u00a0in place, said Martensen, it\u00a0can be\u00a0difficult to\u00a0know\u00a0how many students are participating in\u00a0different types\u00a0of\u00a0community-engaged learning\u00a0\u2014 and better data\u00a0can\u00a0enhance this\u00a0critical aspect of the\u00a0UW Bothell Husky experience.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a matter of scale,\u201d he said. \u201cHow can we make sure that every student on campus has access to these opportunities? How can we get even more of them involved?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since arriving at UW Bothell last summer, Martensen has also dived into joint, long-term planning for all three UW campuses and is excited to see UW Bothell\u2019s strengths lauded and embedded in the University\u2019s overall work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere are a lot of things we do that the UW as a whole is recognizing and incorporating,\u201d he said. \u201cCommunity engagement,\u00a0training students to talk across differences<\/a>\u00a0\u2026 these are being taken on more broadly at the tri-campus level.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planning for statewide impact<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Martensen is deeply involved in long-term strategic planning\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0specific to UW Bothell\u00a0as well. As a veteran of such efforts, he strives to balance the lofty and the tactical by asking, \u201cWhat\u2019s the thing that we can do that\u2019s unique and that we can maximize?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One part of his answer: a commitment to interdisciplinary approaches. \u201cIt\u2019s why we\u2019re well-positioned to help the region and the state,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From AI and cybersecurity to biotech, aerospace, medical and health \u2014 each of these burgeoning fields is interdisciplinary in nature.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a real opportunity,\u201d said Martensen. \u201cThere are lots of experts on this campus who have the ability to look at trends, help shape them and figure out how best to use them.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also\u00a0distinct\u00a0to\u00a0UW Bothell? The fact that it\u00a0is both part of a research university and has a student-focused mission\u00a0at its core. \u201cThe\u00a0UW\u2019s\u00a0multi-campus model means we can both be ourselves and part of something larger,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A shining example of education<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A recent\u00a0arrival to the Pacific Northwest, Martensen has become a champion of UW Bothell\u2019s strengths: faculty expertise, interdisciplinary approaches, community-engaged\u00a0learning\u00a0and thousands of enthusiastic students.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He\u00a0said he\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0even mind the clouds and drizzle that\u00a0can\u00a0blanket the region for weeks or\u00a0months at a time.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But he does not want UW Bothell to be hidden, he added. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPeople often say we\u2019re a hidden gem, and it shouldn\u2019t be a secret,\u201d he said. \u201cUW Bothell is really a gem of a campus in the way we integrate our learning and our impact.\u201d <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
