Today, activism continues to drive her work as an educator, an oral\u202fhistorian\u202fand an award-winning documentary filmmaker.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, her lifelong passion for storytelling has evolved to take on new forms \u2014 starting with an interest in photography as a child.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember thinking that the problem with photography was that the people that you were taking pictures of didn&#8217;t really have a chance to speak for themselves,\u201d said\u202fFreidberg, a lecturer in the University of Washington Bothell\u2019s\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>. \u201cThat was my motivation for going into documentary filmmaking \u2014 it just seemed like a powerful tool for social change.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later in her career,\u202fFreidberg\u202fagain felt that the medium of her storytelling\u202fdidn\u2019t\u202fgive people enough of an opportunity to speak for themselves. For the past decade,\u202fshe\u2019s\u202fshifted her focus to collecting\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2023\/03\/10\/supporting-the-oral-histories-of-seattles-central-district\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oral histories<\/a>, working in partnership with those who share their stories.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the thread that binds these histories? Seattle\u2019s Central District \u2014 the place she calls home and the subject of her latest work, \u201cLimitless: Stories from the Neighborhood that Shaped Seattle.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A hyperlocal focus\u202fon community<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Freidberg\u202fhas lived most her life in the Pacific Northwest \u2014 from Eugene, Oregon,\u202fto Vancouver, British Columbia. She first lived in Seattle\u2019s Central District in the mid-90s.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"960\" height=\"961\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/02\/Jill-Freidberg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33382\" style=\"width:500px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/02\/Jill-Freidberg.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/02\/Jill-Freidberg-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/02\/Jill-Freidberg-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/02\/Jill-Freidberg-768x769.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/02\/Jill-Freidberg-125x125.jpg 125w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/02\/Jill-Freidberg-600x601.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/02\/Jill-Freidberg-400x400.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 960px) 100vw, 960px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was also a motivator for the project, because as a white person I was part of yet another wave of gentrification into the neighborhood,\u201d she said. \u201cSo&nbsp;it felt important to use my skills at the neighborhood level to offset that process that I was a part of.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the early 2000s,\u202fFreidberg\u202fhad been making documentary films about social movements in southern Mexico when she reached a crossroads, she said. \u201cI was at a point where I felt like either I was going to live in Mexico full&nbsp;time and not have the luxury of leaving when things got\u202freally bad, or I was going to stay here in Seattle. I decided to stay put, and that was a conscious decision that whatever creative work I did would be hyperlocal and rooted in the&nbsp;issues that were affecting people in the neighborhood \u2014 in this case, displacement and gentrification.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Central District is Seattle\u2019s historically redlined neighborhood. From the\u202f\u201930s to the\u202f\u201970s, it was the area where people of color,\u202fpredominantly Black\u202fresidents, were allowed to own property. Outside of the district, the real estate industry,\u202fbanks\u202fand legislation worked together to keep people of color relegated to one part of the city \u2014 an area where many community services and infrastructure were also neglected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe outcome of this political and economic reality was that the people who lived there had to overcome these challenges through innovation, creativity, mutual aid, resistance and solidarity,\u201d\u202fFreidberg\u202fsaid. \u201cThe result was that all those processes actually shaped the whole city.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The spirit of a grocery store<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When developers closed the Red Apple grocery store at 23rd and Jackson Street in 2018,\u202fFreidberg\u202fwas heartbroken.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt felt like a community center masquerading as a grocery store in a lot of ways,\u201d she said. \u201cI wanted to use my existing&nbsp;skills to do something and felt that recording the stories of the people who worked and shopped there would be a good way to preserve what it was about the place that made it so important to the community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She launched the\u202fShelf Life\u202fCommunity Story Project to capture the stories,\u202foperating\u202fout of an empty storefront next to the Red Apple. Aiding her in the collection of the oral histories were Dominique Meeks&nbsp;and Mayowa Aina, both UW graduates.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Central District has always reflected the creativity and\u202fresilience\u202fof African American communities nationwide,&nbsp;transforming limited resources into joy, culture, opportunity and belonging,\u201d Meeks said. \u201cThrough these interviews, you hear generations expressing love, anger, hope, frustration,\u202fpride\u202fand perseverance \u2014 often without the benefit of inherited wealth or a blueprint. It reaffirmed what\u202fI\u2019ve\u202falways known: African Americans are repositories of innovation and endurance. We are, truly, walking miracles.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team collected more than 70 interviews over\u202f18 months. The audio interviews were then developed into a podcast series.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;I wanted to use my existing\u00a0skills\u00a0to do something and felt that recording the stories of the people who worked and shopped there would be\u202fa good way\u202fto preserve what it was about the place that made it so important to the community.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Jill\u202fFreidberg, lecturer, School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences\u00a0<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Stories\u202fpreserved&nbsp;in ink<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u202fShelf Life\u202fproject was supported, in part, by grants from King County 4Culture and the\u202fSeattle Office of Arts and Culture.\u202fIt now sits within the umbrella of\u202fFreidberg\u2019s\u202fwork at\u202fWa\u202fNa Wari, a center she co-founded to support Black art and stories in the district.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the oral histories were developed into the podcast,\u202fbut&nbsp;Freidberg\u202fsaid that not all of them were best suited to an audio medium. She then had the idea to publish a book to feature some of the stories that\u202fdidn\u2019t\u202fmake the podcast.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the grant money, she was also able to work with local artists to create illustrations to go with the stories. She curated the collection to fit within several themes, such as&nbsp;migration,&nbsp;childhood\u202fand art. The stories then provided prompts for the artists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book was published in November 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s been a really positive response,\u201d\u202fFreidberg\u202fsaid. \u201cIt feels good to know that the stories are out there working their way through the communities who told them&nbsp;and&nbsp;through&nbsp;people&nbsp;who know nothing about the neighborhood&nbsp;but&nbsp;now maybe do because of this book.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Impacts&nbsp;in the community<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Freidberg\u202fbelieves&nbsp;the book will increase awareness about the history,&nbsp;struggles&nbsp;and\u202fresilience\u202fof Seattle\u2019s Central District. Even more than awareness, she&nbsp;wants&nbsp;it&nbsp;to&nbsp;create change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStories have the power to shift people\u2019s behaviors,\u201d she said. \u201cFor readers who may be moving into a neighborhood like the Central District&nbsp;\u2014 who are more affluent and more likely to be white&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;these stories will make them better neighbors by giving them an understanding of the historical context that they\u2019re moving into,&nbsp;the impact their being there has and the ways they can either exacerbate or mitigate&nbsp;that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For both the interviewers and the subjects, the project has already had an impact through the community building and connections&nbsp;it provides.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I enjoyed most was hearing people\u2019s stories, laughing with them, learning with them and crying with them,\u201d Aina said. \u201cI was inspired, frustrated,\u202fintrigued\u202fand empowered.
