{"id":33363,"date":"2026-02-06T11:02:41","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T19:02:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=33363"},"modified":"2026-02-09T11:11:51","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T19:11:51","slug":"opentowork-this-graduate-experience-led-to-a-software-engineering-job","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2026\/02\/06\/opentowork-this-graduate-experience-led-to-a-software-engineering-job","title":{"rendered":"#Opentowork: This\u00a0graduate experience led to a\u00a0software engineering\u00a0job\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">When Parker Ford graduated from Western Washington University with a bachelor\u2019s degree in computer science in 2021, he struggled to find a job.&nbsp;So&nbsp;he set an ultimatum for himself: If he didn\u2019t find something that year, he would go back to school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2022, he enrolled in the Computer Science &amp; Software Engineering&nbsp;master\u2019s&nbsp;program at the University of Washington Bothell.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe whole time I had been doing a traditional job-search approach of just sending out a ton of applications online and searching on LinkedIn, with very few opportunities,\u201d Ford said. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t until I opened myself up to something different that I saw the biggest return for myself.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shortly after completing his graduate studies, Ford accepted a dream position as a software engineer. His path to getting the job, he said, involved a passion for computer graphics, a bit of cloud watching,\u202fa trip to Brazil \u2014 and\u202fa stroke of serendipity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Technical meets creative<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Ford\u202fgrew up\u202fjust 15 minutes away from UW Bothell in Maltby, Washington.\u202fWhen researching possible graduate programs to attend, the proximity was&nbsp;definitely a&nbsp;perk.\u202fBut even more of a draw, he noted, were the computer graphics courses taught by Dr. Kelvin Sung, a professor in the\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/stem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of STEM<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy senior year at Western, I had taken a graphics\u202fcourse that ignited a spark in me,\u201d Ford said. \u201cIt was the perfect intersection of a creative outlet and the technical side that really interested me. I had that in the back of my mind that this was what I wanted to pursue in the future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeeing that UW Bothell had a professor who specialized in graphics was a huge plus for me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cherry on top, he added, was the teaching assistantship he was offered. Not only did it cover tuition, but it also helped him improve some of his non-technical skills.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ford&nbsp;said he&nbsp;enjoyed Sung\u2019s teaching style and his focus on hands-on project work. His enthusiasm for the subject was palpable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn my classes, Parker was always seen in the front, participating and just very pleasant in class in general,\u201d Sung said. \u201cHe did\u202freally well,\u202fand in most of the projects he would do extra credit. The idea of rendering was still fresh in his mind one day while he was cloud watching&nbsp;\u2014 and he&nbsp;wondered how he could digitally\u202frender\u202frealistic clouds.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe cool thing about having Kelvin as an adviser is that he lets you make it your own,\u201d Ford said. \u201cYou get to&nbsp;come up with&nbsp;your own&nbsp;idea&nbsp;and really take the lead.\u202fHe\u2019s\u202fjust there to guide you along that path. The idea for cloud rendering really sprouted this rabbit hole that became my thesis presentation.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Sung, the idea of cloud rendering was also exciting, as it was something he had never done before either.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI knew very little about this&nbsp;area&nbsp;so I was very happy that he chose it, and we were actually able to learn together,\u201d he said.\u202f\u201cThat\u2019s\u202fwhy\u202fit\u2019s\u202fso much fun working with\u202fgrad\u202fstudents. Every student who comes in with an interest in a specific topic, for me,\u202fit\u2019s\u202fa learning opportunity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI give them guidance and directions on what they should know to do the work,\u201d he said, \u201cand then they find out the specifics and share that knowledge with me.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Accurately rendering clouds is both a difficult and important part of creating believable virtual worlds.&nbsp;Clouds present several unique challenges \u2014 including the lack of a solid shape, which means you&nbsp;have to&nbsp;define&nbsp;how other objects should interact with it, as well as the complex way the&nbsp;clouds&nbsp;interact with light.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ford and Sung published the details of their solution to the problem in their paper, \u201cReal-Time Atmospheric Cloud Rendering System,\u201d which they also\u202fsubmitted\u202fto present at a conference in Manaus, Brazil.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;The cool thing about having Kelvin as an adviser is that he lets you make it your own. You get to\u202fcome up with\u202fyour own idea and really take the lead.\u202fHe\u2019s\u202fjust there to guide you along that path.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p><cite>Parker Ford,\u202fComputer Science &amp; Software Engineering \u201924<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A skillset&nbsp;in demand<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sung had been reviewing papers for the Brazilian Conference on Graphics,\u202fPatterns\u202fand Images for more than a decade and always wanted to attend. After the paper on cloud rendering was accepted, Sung realized that unfortunately his dream of going would have to wait, due to a scheduling conflict. He asked Ford if he could go in his place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was excited but also intimidated by the idea of flying across the globe and giving a presentation in a foreign country,\u201d Ford&nbsp;said. \u201cI had a fear of public&nbsp;speaking,&nbsp;but&nbsp;working as a TA and teaching a lab once a week was\u202fkind of like\u202fexposure therapy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy the time I was there, I\u202fwasn\u2019t\u202freally nervous\u202fabout giving the presentation at all.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That talk went well,\u202fhe\u202fsaid, with questions and interest from the audience. Afterward, two people approached him and introduced themselves as employees at\u202fLeapThought, a software company based in Singapore, with offices spanning the globe \u2014 including one in Bellevue, Washington. They mentioned that the company was always looking for people with his unique skillset and that they should\u202fkeep in touch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A few months later, Ford was interviewing for a job&nbsp;at the company. He now works&nbsp;there&nbsp;as a software engineer. Serving as a generalist, he even does work in graphics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt all kind of worked out for me, because it\u2019s exactly what I wanted to do for my first job,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Open to&nbsp;the&nbsp;possibilities<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sung&nbsp;said he is&nbsp;impressed by Ford\u2019s academic journey, from&nbsp;his struggles&nbsp;to his&nbsp;eventual success finding a job.
