Marsh recognized as Distinguished Alumnus\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Tyson Marsh&nbsp;didn\u2019t&nbsp;know what was&nbsp;in store&nbsp;for him&nbsp;when he arrived&nbsp;as an undergraduate&nbsp;at&nbsp;the University of Washington&nbsp;in 1996.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the previous 12 years,&nbsp;he had attended&nbsp;schools in which&nbsp;his experience and&nbsp;his communities \u2014 Indigenous, Black&nbsp;and,&nbsp;later,&nbsp;Muslim \u2014&nbsp;were completely absent from&nbsp;the curriculum. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But\u00a0that changed at\u00a0the\u00a0UW, where\u00a0classes in\u00a0political science and American ethnic studies\u00a0began to\u00a0paint a fuller picture.\u00a0For the first time,\u00a0he said, his courses\u00a0addressed\u00a0both the achievements and the struggles of his forebears.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u00a0finally had access to the wonderful stories of my communities,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u201cIt made me want to create opportunities for other people to see themselves in our curriculum and the contributions they made\u00a0\u2014 and, quite frankly,\u00a0the erasure.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than two decades later,&nbsp;Dr.&nbsp;Marsh&nbsp;has been recognized with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/alumni\/meet-the-2024-2025-map-distinguished-alumni\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Multicultural Alumni Partnership Distinguished Alumni Award<\/a>&nbsp;for doing just that. He&nbsp;now directs&nbsp;the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/education\/graduate\/lede\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Leadership Development for Educators<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/education\/graduate\/ecrit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Educating for Critical Race Theor<\/a>y&nbsp;concentrations&nbsp;at UW Bothell\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Educational Studies<\/a>. Through these programs,&nbsp;he prepares&nbsp;future educators, administrators and&nbsp;nonprofit&nbsp;executives&nbsp;to become anti-racist leaders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Creating&nbsp;pathways to higher education<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am deeply committed to holding the UW responsible&nbsp;to&nbsp;the needs of all our communities in Washington state,\u201d said Marsh, an associate professor in SES.&nbsp;\u201cThis award to me means that this work is still valued by the institution, which is important in this particular moment.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His&nbsp;passion for&nbsp;activism caught fire&nbsp;in his undergraduate&nbsp;days, when&nbsp;affirmative action&nbsp;in Washington was then under attack via Initiative 200.&nbsp;\u201cI realized I had agency!\u201d&nbsp;he&nbsp;said. \u201cI saw that we couldn\u2019t rely on a colonial institution to do the critical work for our communities.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He took special inspiration from\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Saraswati\u00a0Sunindyo,\u00a0an\u00a0ethnic studies professor who\u00a0assigned\u00a0his class a pivotal project:\u00a0Identify\u00a0an issue or challenge facing\u00a0your community and design an intervention.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response,\u00a0Marsh teamed\u00a0up with other students, including Tyrone Porter, Keoke\u00a0Silvano and Chris Knaus, to create an outreach\u00a0program\u00a0of\u00a0the Minority Think Tank\u00a0\u2014\u00a0which he cofounded with Jerald Harris, Tyrone Porter and Michael Tuncap\u00a0\u2014\u00a0called\u00a0EMPOWER.\u00a0Its\u00a0mission:\u00a0Create a pathway\u00a0to higher education by teaching ethnic studies to Black,\u00a0brown\u00a0and minoritized students in local high schools.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over&nbsp;the next few years, the&nbsp;UW&nbsp;undergrads&nbsp;reached about 150 teens in&nbsp;roughly a&nbsp;dozen area schools by weaving hip hop, spoken word and multimedia arts&nbsp;into&nbsp;a&nbsp;tailored&nbsp;ethnic studies curriculum.&nbsp;They also arranged for these EMPOWER&nbsp;students&nbsp;to&nbsp;visit&nbsp;the&nbsp;UW&nbsp;campus,&nbsp;make personal connections and&nbsp;get help with the college admissions process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;It made me want to create opportunities for other people to see themselves in our curriculum and the contributions they made \u2014 and, quite frankly,&nbsp;the erasure.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Dr. Tyson E.J. Marsh, associate professor, School of Educational Studies&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Setting a&nbsp;lifelong&nbsp;trajectory<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Sumona Das Gupta, who now chairs the education committee of the Multicultural Alumni Partnership, led EMPOWER for three years as an undergraduate. She worked closely with Marsh on everything from mentorship to community engagement.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThrough EMPOWER, Tyson demonstrated an ability to bridge diverse perspectives and build inclusive spaces where others feel seen and supported,\u201d she said. \u201cHis integrity, follow-through and genuine care for people have had a lasting impact on our community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marsh&nbsp;also&nbsp;worked closely with the&nbsp;UW\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/omad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office of Minority&nbsp;Affairs &amp; Diversity<\/a>, where&nbsp;he was a member of the student advisory board.&nbsp;\u201cAdvisers in the office supported, consulted and nurtured us in our activism,\u201d he said. \u201cThey&nbsp;set me on a trajectory and made me the human I am today.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was excited&nbsp;to&nbsp;learn from&nbsp;leaders such as&nbsp;Dr. Emile Pitre,&nbsp;who&nbsp;co-founded the UW\u2019s Black Student Union, which in turn&nbsp;laid the foundation for the creation of OMAD.&nbsp;\u201cIt was the first time I could use my voice,\u201d said Marsh of his undergraduate days.&nbsp;\u201cIt was the&nbsp;first time I had folks from my community I could look up to and learn from.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marsh\u00a0also\u00a0took an active role in\u00a0student government, both\u00a0as a member of\u00a0the\u00a0Associated\u00a0Students of UW\u2019s\u00a0board of\u00a0directors and\u00a0as\u00a0director of the Black Student Commission.\u00a0\u201cThat service,\u201d he said, \u201cput me continuously\u00a0in contact with\u00a0the\u00a0amazing resources that exist at UW for first-generation students like me who have largely experienced education devoid of their cultural experience.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Coming full circle to Bothell<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating&nbsp;in 2001&nbsp;with a double major in political science and American ethnic studies, Marsh considered pursuing an advanced degree in political science. But&nbsp;when a&nbsp;UW&nbsp;friend gave him a copy of&nbsp;\u201cThe Paolo Freire Reader,\u201d he realized&nbsp;that&nbsp;\u201cthe field of education would give me the space to do what I wanted to do.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So\u00a0he\u00a0enrolled\u00a0in the University of California, Los Angeles, where he earned his\u00a0doctorate\u00a0in education. Marsh\u2019s professional path\u00a0next\u00a0took\u00a0him\u00a0to\u00a0Egypt, where he\u00a0cofounded an international American school, and eventually back to the United States, where he taught in\u00a0several\u00a0universities before returning to the UW in 2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This time,&nbsp;he set down roots in Bothell.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In SES,\u00a0Marsh\u00a0has\u00a0played\u00a0a central role\u00a0in redesigning the Leadership Development for Educators concentration to more strongly emphasize antiracist leadership and educational justice.\u00a0He\u00a0also co-designed the Educating for Critical Race Theory concentration \u2014 a\u00a0University-wide program housed at UW Bothell \u2014 with faculty at the UW in Seattle and UW Tacoma.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile the E-CRiT\u00a0concentration has been in development for five years,\u201d said Marsh, \u201cI feel that the autumn quarter 2026 timing for its launch could not be better. It will bring much-needed dialogue and understanding to a body of knowledge and research that, while often misunderstood, is deeply rooted in community knowledge and voice.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Developing new frameworks<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Marsh\u2019s recent scholarship\u00a0has him partnering to develop the Indigenous Decolonizing School Leadership framework, which critiques Eurocentric schooling as a tool of colonialism and offers an Indigenous-centered approach to educational leadership. He\u00a0also\u00a0has\u00a0joined with Navajo leader Dr. Shawn Secatero, an associate professor at the University of New Mexico,\u00a0to\u00a0forward\u00a0the Corn Pollen Model of Indigenous well-being.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Considering all his\u00a0ongoing\u00a0work,\u00a0Marsh\u00a0said he\u00a0has found fertile ground at UW Bothell\u00a0\u2014 and\u00a0looks forward to sharing his learnings\u00a0with his students\u00a0in SES and\u00a0with\u00a0those in other disciplines across the University.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUW Bothell is the best campus,\u201d he said. \u201cIt reflects all the students I worked on behalf of as an undergrad.
