The Carnegie\u202fClassification for Community Engagement\u202f\u2014 an endorsement also\u202fgained\u202fby\u202fthe University of Washington in\u202fSeattle and UW Tacoma \u2014\u202fis\u202fheld by fewer than 10%\u202fof higher education institutions in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m incredibly proud of\u202four\u202fCarnegie\u202fCommunity Engagement\u202freclassification,\u201d said UW Bothell Chancellor Kristin G. Esterberg. \u201cIt\u2019s\u202fan enormous\u202fachievement\u202fthat\u202freflects the sustained efforts and\u202fdedication\u202fof the entire UW\u202fBothell\u202fcommunity\u202fand\u202fhundreds of\u202four\u202fcommunity partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy fostering strong connections and providing opportunities for students to engage with the community through research, class projects and internships, we create a dynamic and supportive environment that aligns student interests, faculty strengths and community\u202fneeds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Showing the impact of collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>UW Bothell first received the five-year Carnegie designation in 2020, following a rigorous third-party examination and evaluation of its institutionalized efforts to engage with the community. The new reclassification, which runs through 2031, places UW Bothell among just 277 institutions nationwide that are recognized for \u201cdeepening partnerships, leveraging community assets and addressing urgent societal challenges,\u201d according to the decision notification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur\u202fapplication reflected\u202fthe collaborative efforts of our entire campus community,\u201d\u202fsaid Kara\u202fAdams,\u202fdirector of\u202fcommunity engagement\u202fand strategic\u202fpartnerships\u202ffor UW Bothell. \u201cSchools, divisions and offices across UW Bothell contributed evidence, data and stories that together showcase the depth and impact of our engagement\u202fin the region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The materials covered everything from institutional policy to internships, courses, mentorship and research \u2014 all forms of community engagement in action. Partner Guatemala Village Health, a Seattle-based nonprofit, helped arrange for students to visit more than a dozen villages to provide free health care to residents and information for local nurses, lay midwives and other health workers.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Empowering the next wave of innovators&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>External\u202fpartnerships form a cornerstone of UW Bothell\u2019s\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/about\/community-engagement\">community engagement<\/a>\u202fefforts.\u202fTo date, students have collaborated with more than 400 businesses, non-profit\u202forganizations\u202fand government agencies\u202fregionally,\u202fnationally\u202fand globally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past five years,\u202fthe quality and depth of\u202fseveral\u202fpartnerships\u202f\u2014\u202feach\u202fshowcased\u202fin the Carnegie application \u2014\u202fhave\u202fespecially deepened.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Avanade, the\u202fglobal internet technology company,\u202fprovides annual scholarships, internships and mentorships\u202fto students\u202fin\u202fthe\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/stem\/\">School of STEM<\/a>.\u202fIt\u202falso\u202fsponsors an annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2025\/06\/12\/students-collaborate-to-save-the-world\">hackathon<\/a>\u202fthat draws hundreds of student participants\u202ffrom every academic discipline to form connections, develop skills and\u202fharness technology for the greater good.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company expanded its support of UW Bothell in\u202fautumn\u202f2024 when it launched a $60,000 scholarship for\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/business\/\">School of Business<\/a>\u202fstudents. The partnership supported the Historic Downtown Snohomish Association\u2019s mission to revitalize the downtown.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Keeping the focus hyper-local&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>UW Bothell began partnering with\u202fits\u202fnamesake city even before it opened its doors in autumn 1990. Since then,\u202fthe University has\u202fforged a\u202fmeaningful, reciprocal\u202frelationship\u202fthrough community-engaged learning, research, service\u202fprojects\u202fand student\u202finternships\u202fin multiple city departments \u2014 and more.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether they are\u202fmonitoring\u202fsalmon\u202fruns, mapping watershed basins\u202for contributing to engineering and planning projects, UW\u202fBothell students\u202fhelp to build a thriving\u202ffuture \u2014 for themselves and for the municipality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re proud of UW Bothell\u2019s well-deserved designation for exemplary community engagement,\u201d said Kyle\u202fStannert, Bothell city manager. \u201cThis achievement reflects the University\u2019s commitment to collaboration and service, and its partnership continues to strengthen Bothell\u2019s economic and cultural vitality.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noted Esterberg, \u201cLike the\u202fcity of Bothell, we are committed to building our regional workforce. Last summer, student Ash Putzke completed research and design of new features for Kirkland\u2019s O.O. Denny Park with mentor Dr. Jeff Jensen, teaching professor in the School of STEM.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strengthening community well-being&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Association on Mental Illness\u202faims to\u202fadvocate, educate and build public awareness about mental illness.\u202fThe\u202flocal chapter\u2019s\u202fpartnership with UW Bothell helps to fulfill\u202fits\u202fmission by\u202finforming\u202fstudents,\u202ffaculty\u202fand staff about mental health resources. In turn,\u202fstudents learn about mental health efforts on a national and local scale.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\u202fone\u202fbusiness writing\u202fclass,\u202ffor example,\u202fstudents worked\u202fin teams to\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2021\/10\/01\/business-of-mental-health\">create content on the NAMI website\u202f<\/a>to\u202fhelp\u202fdestigmatize\u202fmental illness.\u202fIn addition to teaching the mechanics of business writing and interviewing, the\u202fNAMI\u202fpartnership allowed\u202fthe professor to address business ethics as they pertain to mental health.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNAMI Eastside\u2019s longstanding partnership with UW\u202fBothell\u202fhas significantly strengthened our ability to serve East King County families affected by mental illness,\u201d said\u202fJason Cunningham, NAMI operations manager. \u201cStudents consistently bring fresh ideas and energy that help us reach and educate hundreds of local youth and parents each year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTheir consistent volunteer engagement has also boosted our volunteer retention and expanded our capacity to deliver critical support groups, education\u202fprograms\u202fand advocacy initiatives,\u201d he said. \u201cThis program has made a tangible, lasting difference in the mental health and well-being of our community.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"770\" height=\"427\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/01\/noelle-d-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33287\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/01\/noelle-d-2.png 770w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/01\/noelle-d-2-300x166.png 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/01\/noelle-d-2-768x426.png 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2026\/01\/noelle-d-2-600x333.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Each winter, Dr. Jason Naranjo, associate teaching professor in the School of Educational Studies, partners with Outdoors for All on his course, \u201cDisability &amp; Society: A Focus on Community and the Outdoors.\u201d Students are paired with skiers from OfA, an organization that provides adaptive outdoor activities for children and adults with cognitive and physical restrictions, and help teach them to ski while observing the sport through a lens of accessibility and disability justice.&nbsp;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Engaging future generations&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Through\u202fUW Bothell\u2019s\u202fcollaborations\u202fwith\u202fnearby Saint Edward State Park,\u202ffaculty and student researchers have\u202finvestigated\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2025\/10\/10\/the-harmful-side-of-english-holly\">invasive species<\/a>,\u202fstudied\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2024\/04\/12\/when-a-park-becomes-a-classroom\">animal ecology<\/a>\u202fand\u202fcreated\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2025\/04\/11\/a-more-meaningful-map\">new maps<\/a>\u202fof the park.\u202fThis\u202fwork\u202fopens\u202fdoors for students to careers in environmental and sustainability fields, while the park\u202fbenefits\u202ffrom\u202fthe research findings, which\u202fcan inform management practices, conservation\u202fstrategies\u202fand visitor experiences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UW Bothell\u202fhas also\u202festablished\u202fthe\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/cosee\/\">Community-Engaged Collaborative for Socio-Ecological Engagement<\/a>, an interdisciplinary hub and multi-unit research and education project\u202fat the Environmental Education &amp; Research Center\u202fin the park. CoSEE connects students, scientists, educators and community\u202fpartners\u202fthrough field studies,\u202fmonthly\u202fnature walks,\u202fa family-centered\u202f<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/cosee\/events-programs\/\">101 Program Series<\/a>, place-based creative practices, and youth and family outreach.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u202fCoSEE\u202fdesign process brings diverse collaborators\u202fto the\u202ftable\u202f\u2014\u202finitiating\u202fideas and providing feedback on culminating products.\u202fLocal youth help guide family-centered projects, and the\u202fCoSEE\u202fteam\u202factively\u202fseeks feedback from participants of all ages.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Park\u202franger Daryl Kline said,\u202f\u201cWe\u2019ve been honored to partner with UW Bothell these past years at the\u202fEERC\u202fto\u202fprovide unique opportunities for education and research programs; to explore and deepen the knowledge and public understanding of the natural assets throughout the park; and to tap into the deeply rooted community interests of maintaining a healthy, resilient natural environment throughout Saint Edward State In the\u202fmost recent\u202fapplication, we\u202fspeak more about civic engagement\u202fand\u202fUW Bothell\u2019s\u202frole\u202fin advancing dialogue to\u202fpromote positive\u202fchange.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One example\u202fstands out: Through a competitive process, UW Bothell\u2019s Office of Diversity, Equity &amp; Inclusion\u202fwas selected as one of only 31 universities nationwide to\u202fparticipate\u202fin\u202fa pilot project aimed at fostering constructive discourse in higher education. This effort reinforced\u202fthe University\u2019s commitment to equipping students with the skills needed for meaningful and constructive civic engagement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today,\u202fall of UW Bothell\u2019s incoming undergraduate students are introduced to foundational dialogue principles during orientation, ensuring that civil discourse becomes an integral part of their academic journey. Multiple student-staff teams, student leadership groups, faculty, professional staff and campus leadership\u202fteams\u202fhave also engaged in this program, expanding its impact\u202facross the campus and in the community.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The focus on dialogue highlights\u202fits\u202finterdisciplinary importance in preparing students to be informed, engaged citizens, Esterberg added.\u202fThe initiative empowers students not only to navigate challenging conversations within academic settings but also in their personal lives and within community settings through community-engaged courses and\u202finternships.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI believe it is more important than ever for us to infuse civic skills in our education,\u201d Esterberg said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;UW Bothell embodies what it means to be a true community partner.&nbsp;We\u2019re\u202fconstantly inspired by the drive and creativity of their students and faculty \u2014 whether\u202fwe\u2019re\u202fcocreating events, mentoring through the NextGen program or helping student clubs connect\u202freal-world\u202finsight to classroom learning.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Margaret Doheny, Avanade\u2019s USA &amp; Canada corporate citizenship lead&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A growing commitment&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since first gaining\u202fthe\u202fCarnegie\u202fCommunity Engagement Classification\u202fsix years ago, UW Bothell has deepened its commitment to collaboration.\u202fNew\u202fpolicies include the\u202faddition of an\u202fundergraduate learning goal focused on community engagement.
