But sometimes, it helps to hear it from someone even closer to their situation \u2013 a peer adviser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/justin-han--1-.jpg\" alt=\"Justin Han\" class=\"wp-image-28492\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Photo: Peer adviser Justin Han offers advice. (Marc Studer photos)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think you walk in to college as a senior from high school thinking you know everything. I realized I don\u2019t,\u201c said Jamal Howard, now ready to graduate in June in media and communications studies.<br>\nHoward was a sophomore when he decided to stop and ask directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to put myself in the best position possible, so I made my way here,\u201d Howard said in the Student Success Center where he received advice from another student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was cool to hear guidance from people my age \u2013 someone that actually is going through the same things I\u2019m going through. Having them as a source is really important,\u201d said Howard, who starts a full-time job this summer with a marketing company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/jamal-howard--jayme-woods.jpg\" alt=\"Jamal Howard, Jayme Woods\" class=\"wp-image-28493\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Photo: Jamal Howard talks with adviser Jayme Woods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Xie Chen \u201cTiger\u201d Song, a first-year student interested in a career in video production, said talking with peer adviser Justin Han helped him see \u201chow my ideas and thoughts fit in a certain major and whether I should pursue this or that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what really impressed Song was when Han called him up just to ask how he was doing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt really shows that having someone in higher ed who really cares about you has a profound impact on your academics,\u201d Song said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peer advising is more than picking out classes. \u201cWhether it\u2019s a good fit \u2013 something someone\u2019s passionate about \u2013 is another question,\u201d Han said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/erica-qiao.jpg\" alt=\"Erica Qiao\" class=\"wp-image-28494\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Photo: Adviser Erica Qiao specializes in pre-med or health studies students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSometimes a student comes in and tells me their situation and I\u2019m like, \u2018Oh, I know exactly what you\u2019re going through because I\u2019ve been through something similar,\u2019 and then I share my experience with them and tell them what they can do, what their options are,\u201d said Han, who is graduating in June in media and communications studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Han was one of the first people hired in 2014 when the peer adviser program was started by Kathy Mitchell, first-year program academic adviser, and one of six professional academic advisers at the Student Success Center. The five current peer advisers were chosen to represent a variety of majors with special backgrounds or skills. Han, for example, speaks Chinese. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the top skills Mitchell looks for in a peer adviser are empathy and customer service. Advisers are trained in the various academic offerings and in protecting student privacy. The peers see about 500 students a quarter who drop in to the center, Mitchell said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/jayme-woods.jpg\" alt=\"Jayme Woods\" class=\"wp-image-28495\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jayme Woods, right, the lead peer adviser, was a Running Start student, now graduating in June with a master\u2019s degree in education. Other Running Start students seek her advice.
