{"id":3282,"date":"2017-04-12T16:32:12","date_gmt":"2017-04-12T16:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=3282"},"modified":"2023-06-08T19:46:13","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T19:46:13","slug":"hackathon-garden","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2017\/04\/12\/hackathon-garden","title":{"rendered":"First hackathon in series targets campus garden"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n      <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/hackathon-garden.jpg\" alt=\"hackathon garden\" class=\"wp-image-26405\"><\/figure>\n\n          <p>The first in a planned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwbhackathonseries.com\/\">series of University of Washington Bothell community hackathons<\/a> on Friday aims to make improvements at the garden sprouting on campus between the north parking garage and the sports fields.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/bothell-fire-015.jpg\" alt=\"campus garden\" class=\"wp-image-26406\"><\/figure>\n\n<p>The Garden Innovation Challenge during Earth Week is the work of the Hackathon Series Committee, a partnership of seven student clubs and organizations led by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers chapter and its chair Cameron Whalen.<\/p>\n\n<p>Funded with $20,000 from student fees, the Hackathon Series aims to bring students from across campus together to address community problems in an experience that also advances their studies and career plans.<\/p>\n\n<p>About a half-dozen students braved a cold rain at the garden April 7 for a pre-hackathon get-together to hear from Whalen and two campus partners, Grounds Supervisor Tyson Kemper and Sustainability Coordinator Cassie Lubenow.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/cassie-lubenow-speaks.jpg\" alt=\"Cassie Lubenow in orange coat\" class=\"wp-image-26407\"><\/figure>\n\n<p>Kemper welcomes different perspectives and the opportunity to use the garden for outdoor learning experiences. Lubenow, above in orange coat, also welcomes student-originated ideas and the possibility the garden could produce food for the campus.<\/p>\n\n<p>Whalen, left, hopes up to 90 students take part in the hackathon from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 21 in the Activities and Recreation Center. They&rsquo;ll pitch ideas to a group of mentors who will offer guidance. They include the Woodinville demonstration farm <a href=\"http:\/\/farmerfrog.org\/\">Farmer Frog<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rh2.com\/\">RH2 Engineering<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/en-us\/\">Microsoft<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stormsensor.io\/\">StormSensor<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hackster.io\/\">Hackster.io<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/cameron-whalen-speaks.jpg\" alt=\"Cameron Whalen speaks\" class=\"wp-image-26408\"><\/figure>\n\n<p>Hacks are suggested in three possible areas: watering the garden, using electronic or internet-connected devices to monitor activity or soil conditions, and thinking of ways to best use the garden for education, exploration and collaboration.<\/p>\n\n<p>Although he is graduating and will work at the Bellevue nuclear energy company TerraPower, Whalen hopes the hackathon series will continue in the fall.
