Each discovery and point of discourse&nbsp;builds&nbsp;on what came before it and the contributions of a scholar\u2019s&nbsp;contemporaries.&nbsp;There\u2019s&nbsp;a kind of collaborative nature to it and a sense of working toward a shared goal,&nbsp;said&nbsp;Dr. William Hartmann,&nbsp;even when&nbsp;you\u2019re&nbsp;not&nbsp;operating&nbsp;as part of a team.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But when you can get a bunch of leading experts in a field in a room together,&nbsp;he added,&nbsp;<em>that<\/em>&nbsp;is truly where the magic happens.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hartmann, an associate professor in the University of Washington Bothell\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>, researches the intersections of psychology, mental health, and American Indian and Indigenous studies. Working in community with fellow researchers and the people who are&nbsp;impacted&nbsp;by his research is the driving force behind many of his projects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his latest project, Hartmann\u00a0convened\u00a0experts in the field of\u00a0American Indian mental\u00a0health for\u00a0a two-day writing retreat\u00a0on the\u00a0UW Bothell\u00a0campus\u00a0centered around the topic: \u201cIndigenous Self-Determination in Mental Health.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Community relationships<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hartmann first became interested in American Indian studies as an undergraduate.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a way for me to reflect on and interrogate what it means to be American,\u201d he said. \u201cAs a psychology major, I was really interested in the big questions, like what it means to be human and how to think about health and wellness.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alongside his psychology course load, he took classes in anthropology, religion and history to further explore these topics. His passion and experience for the subject deepened in his doctoral program at the University of Michigan under the mentorship of Dr. Joseph Gone, a leading global expert in the field and a member of the\u00a0Aaniiih-Gros\u00a0Ventre\u00a0tribal nation of Montana.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For his first independent\u00a0research\u00a0project,\u00a0Hartmann\u00a0drew upon\u00a0his\u00a0relationships\u00a0with\u00a0members of\u00a0a\u00a0Great Plains\u00a0reservation community\u00a0to\u00a0develop an interview study about\u00a0historical trauma. As he continued to\u00a0develop\u00a0as a\u00a0researcher, the community relationships he built further pulled him\u00a0along this path. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe collaborations\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0had have really propelled me along this path,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Now, I\u00a0can&#8217;t\u00a0imagine doing anything different because\u00a0I&#8217;ve\u00a0invested and grown so much as a scholar and a person through all these collaborative projects.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a clinical and community psychologist and researcher, Hartmann works with Indigenous communities to learn what their health priorities are and where those priorities fit or\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0fit within established professional frameworks for mental health.\u00a0\u201cMy career has largely been about trying to make space for Native perspectives on health and wellness and to better understand how Native mental health experiences, concerns and goals square with conventional understandings of and approaches to mental health,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A meeting of the minds<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At UW Bothell, Hartmann has continued to explore ways of working in community with other\u00a0academic and Indigenous community\u00a0scholars. In 2019, he hosted a campus event on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2019\/02\/07\/indigenous-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Creating Survivance: Art and Indigenous Wellness<\/a>,\u201d which included\u00a0several\u00a0panel discussions\u00a0with\u00a0Indigenous scholars\u00a0and contemporary Lakota artists, as well as\u00a0a contemporary Lakota art exhibition\u00a0on the UW Bothell campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause I\u2019m trained as a clinical psychologist, that\u00a0project\u00a0really took\u00a0me out of\u00a0my comfort zone in\u00a0the clinic\u00a0and\u00a0pushed me\u00a0to think\u00a0more broadly about community\u00a0health\u00a0and wellness\u00a0practices\u00a0for mental health,\u201d he said. \u201cIt was a really helpful\u00a0stepping stone\u00a0to\u00a0think\u00a0about\u00a0a\u00a0broader array of\u00a0creative\u00a0community practices, including art,\u00a0that can be integral to\u00a0tribe\u2019s\u00a0self-determined understandings, strategies, and goals\u00a0for mental health.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He then connected with Dr. Rachel Wilbur, a research assistant professor at Washington State University, who had also written on the topic of survivance \u2014 meaning the blending of survival and resistance as it relates to Indigenous identities. Together, they&nbsp;identified&nbsp;self-determination as an area of study and discussion they wanted to explore as a collective with other scholars.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were interested in bringing together some of the most brilliant minds who think\u00a0and write\u00a0about\u00a0Indigenous self-determination\u00a0in the Native mental health space,\u201d Hartmann said. \u201cWe wanted to\u00a0clarify\u00a0the landscape of this\u00a0scholarship\u00a0and how people\u00a0think and write\u00a0about self-determination. We figured the best way to do that would be a writing retreat where we could\u00a0talk,\u00a0in-depth, with some of the leading thinkers in this area from across the continent.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With funding support from UW Bothell\u2019s Scholarship, Research&nbsp;and&nbsp;Creative Practice&nbsp;grant&nbsp;program, Hartmann and Wilbur organized a two-day retreat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Work as a collective<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The team invited experts from both the U.S. and Canada to\u00a0submit\u00a0an abstract for a proposed paper\u00a0on\u00a0Indigenous self-determination in mental health to be presented and workshopped for feedback during the retreat.\u00a0Nearly a\u00a0dozen people attended.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe primary goal was to learn from each other and to further develop our thinking around this issue, because there isn\u2019t robust literature in this area,\u201d Hartmann said. \u201cWe wanted to push each other\u2019s thinking and it was clear that everybody felt there\u2019s a lot more to be said on self-determination and ways to make this work more beneficial for Native community partners and research audiences.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed papers included a mix of theoretical and applied articles, as well as institutional changemaking research.&nbsp;Some of the topics included: \u201cA land-based healing initiative,\u201d \u201cA narrative shift to strengths-based research and intervention as prevention,\u201d and \u201cUnpacking the \u2018self\u2019 in Indigenous self-determination, a critique of selfhood as represented in American psychology and the health&nbsp;psy-ences.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was a good mix of early- and late-stage career folks,\u201d&nbsp;Hartmann said.&nbsp;\u201cThe experienced veterans had such helpful feedback and perspectives. It was so rewarding, not just for me as a co-facilitator but as a participant workshopping my own papers. I received incredible feedback.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was everything we hoped it would be,&nbsp;and it couldn\u2019t have gone any better.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, the impact and engagement of the group\u2019s collaboration\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0end with the retreat, he\u00a0said.\u00a0The participants have continued working on their papers and sharing them for feedback.\u00a0Hartmann and Wilbur are\u00a0also\u00a0collecting all the articles that came out of the retreat for a proposed special issue in &#8220;Social Science and Medicine- Mental Health,&#8221; a high-impact interdisciplinary mental health journal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;Everybody felt\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a lot more to be said on self-determination and ways to make our work interpretable that are beneficial to Native community partners and research audiences.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Dr. William Hartmann, associate professor, School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences\u00a0<br><\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Valuable insights for researchers<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Hartmann\u2019s contributions to the issue will include an introduction and an overview of existing Indigenous self-determination in mental health and wellness research in the U.S. and Canada, co-authored by Wilbur.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also&nbsp;on the list to be included is a&nbsp;paper he worked on in collaboration with several students and Dr. Sara Eccleston, assistant professor in UW Tacoma\u2019s&nbsp;School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences, titled, \u201cA qualitative analysis of Indigenous misrepresentations in mental health research writing.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne of the best takeaways, for me, was that I should always think through things in good company because it makes for a richer analysis and better experience,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He&nbsp;said he&nbsp;hopes the special issue and the diverse range of papers it&nbsp;contains&nbsp;will provide valuable insights for other researchers and mental health professionals, as well as Native American community leaders and policy makers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was probably one of the most intellectually rewarding experiences I\u2019ve had,\u201d Hartmann said.&nbsp;\u201cI feel like even the senior scholars walked away feeling like they learned a lot.
