{"id":32216,"date":"2025-04-18T14:34:00","date_gmt":"2025-04-18T21:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=32216"},"modified":"2025-10-21T16:13:44","modified_gmt":"2025-10-21T23:13:44","slug":"developmental-youth-studies-provides-foundation-for-range-of-careers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2025\/04\/18\/developmental-youth-studies-provides-foundation-for-range-of-careers","title":{"rendered":"Developmental &amp; Youth Studies provides foundation for range of careers\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Educators know that developing minds have unique needs and so engaging with both children and young adults requires special consideration for those needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expertise in this area is essential for teaching in the K-12 space, but many other careers can also benefit from specialized knowledge in how to support children and young people \u2014 including\u202ffields from psychology and health care policy to data analysis and user experience research.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To provide students with the foundational skills and knowledge to support a full range of careers, the University of Washington Bothell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Educational Studies<\/a> is launching a major in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/education\/undergraduate\/developmental-and-youth-studies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Developmental &amp; Youth Studies<\/a> in fall 2025.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis major is designed for students passionate about making a difference in the lives of children, adolescents and youth,\u201d said Dr. Sarita Shukla, associate teaching professor in the SES and chairperson for the Campus Council on Assessment and Learning. \u201cIt offers a deep understanding of the factors that impact young people\u2019s development, preparing students to serve and support them in meaningful ways.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A specialized alternative<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Work on the Developmental &amp; Youth Studies major began several years ago when faculty and staff noticed that students were seeking a more focused degree option for education-related careers outside schools. Developed concurrently alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2024\/11\/14\/new-minors-support-education-careers-beyond-the-classroom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two new minors<\/a> in Child &amp; Youth Development and in Educational Advocacy &amp; Community Engagement, the new major will replace the Educational Studies major.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Introduced as the first undergraduate major offered by the SES in 2015, Educational Studies was a generalized, interdisciplinary major that over time became difficult to fulfill within the school, said Amy Couto, SES associate director of academic services.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve learned that students were looking for something more specific and in-depth, so the new major is really built for students who have academic interests in education outside of the K-12 classroom,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I\u2019m most excited about with this new program is that we can now provide students with pathways to careers that span a variety of contexts, such as education, health care, community services and so much more, which is something that\u2019s been needed and asked for.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor our school to be able to respond to that need and offer this program is huge,\u201d Couto said, \u201cand we\u2019re really excited about it.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>&#8220;This major is designed for students passionate about making a difference in the lives of children, adolescents and youth.&#8221; <\/p><cite>Dr. Sarita Shukla, associate teaching professor, School of Educational Studies&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A focused curriculum<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To address the challenge of not having enough course offerings in the Educational Studies major, SES staff and faculty designed a sequence of foundational and course classes, as well as an abundance of electives, to ensure strong pathways for degree completion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis new SES major draws upon the expertise of our current faculty and will be a wonderful learning experience for students,\u201d said Dr. Antony Smith, associate professor in the school and chair of the Bachelor of Arts Coordinating Group during initial planning stages of the new degree.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith is looking forward to teaching several of the new courses, including an Educational Studies Research course that he developed. As the program curriculum has been developed over several years, some of the other new classes have already been offered in previous quarters \u2014 including Topics in Education and Popular Culture: Banned Books and Controversial Topics in Children\u2019s Literature and Young Adult Fiction, which was launched in spring 2024. Smith is currently teaching the course this quarter.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new curriculum also provides opportunities for students to get outside the classroom and engage in the community. Smith noted that he\u2019s especially eager to teach a course called Applied Experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cApplied Experience will be an amazing opportunity for students to see and apply the major\u2019s themes and learning goals in a variety of community placements, coordinated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/connected-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office of Connected Learning<\/a>.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The development path<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Nathanie Lee, assistant teaching professor in SES, currently teaches a course called Adolescents in Schools and Society and was able to design another course on Children in Schools and Society for the new major, both of which partner with OCL to facilitate community engagement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love how students will be able to see ideas come to life when they work with children,\u201d Lee said. \u201cThe new course focuses a lot on identity development and how children form ideas of who they are within the diverse contexts in which they navigate. Students will be able to critique theories of development and to apply their new understandings to practice within some of the community engaged learning courses.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shukla said she is most excited about a core course she developed \u2014 Gathering, Analyzing, and Using Data in Education. \u201cThis course is designed to empower students with the skills to gather, analyze and utilize educational data effectively,\u201d she said. \u201cThey will learn to critique data and draw meaningful conclusions, preparing them to make informed decisions in educational settings.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Marisa DuBois, director of academic services for the school, worked closely with Shukla on the proposal for the major. As someone who works in higher education but doesn\u2019t teach, she has a personal interest and appreciation for what the new degree offers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is really incredible and important work that is done working alongside students that isn\u2019t teaching, and I think many of us who work in education have at times felt like social workers,\u201d DuBois said. \u201cThere\u2019s also important policy work that happens within our education systems that provides a critical lens on the factors that impact and support students throughout their developmental span, from the minute we\u2019re born until we\u2019re in our mid-20s, still figuring out what career we want to go into \u2014 and there are many people supporting us and shepherding us.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/04\/CYS-2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/04\/CYS-2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/04\/CYS-2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/04\/CYS-2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/04\/CYS-2-1200x800.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/04\/CYS-2-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2025\/04\/CYS-2.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><strong>Possibilities beyond classrooms<\/strong><\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Developmental &amp; Youth Studies degree doesn\u2019t officially launch until fall 2025, a number of students have already expressed an interest in the program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First-year student Hasset Worku is especially drawn to how the new major could be paired with a major in Psychology.\u202f\u201cSince I want to become a professor in psychology \u2014 with a specific interest around child development, human sexuality and more behavioral aspects of psychology \u2014 I could definitely see myself utilizing this major,\u201d she said. \u201cI think double majoring would give me a strong foundation.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Worku, many other students may find similar opportunities to combine interests in careers ranging from policy to computer science.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat\u2019s great about Developmental &amp;
