Innovation encouraged"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n      <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/innovation-help.jpg\" alt=\"innovation help\" class=\"wp-image-27574\"><\/figure>\n\n          <p>By Douglas Esser<br \/>\nInvention-minded students, faculty and staff at the University of Washington Bothell are invited to apply for $100,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/catalyst.amazon.com\/programs\/uw\/\">Amazon Catalyst<\/a> grants to help get the innovation started.<\/p>\n\n<p>The money comes from Seattle&rsquo;s online retailer Amazon in partnership with <a href=\"http:\/\/comotion.uw.edu\/\">CoMotion<\/a>, the UW innovation hub. Lizzie Tao, CoMotion marketing manager, offered tips for winning the money at a meeting Thursday in the Activities and Recreation Center with Mark Oehlert, who has the Amazon title of head of programs in the department of ideas.<\/p>\n\n<p>Among about a dozen people at the meeting were Tyler Folsom, affiliate professor, and two members of his <a href=\"\/news\/october-2016\/self-driving-bicycles\">team who are developing a self-driving tricycle<\/a>, with support from Amazon Catalyst. Folsom is among the first 18 Catalyst fellows. Their work has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.king5.com\/news\/local\/uw-bothell-students-develop-self-driving-trike\/393715932\">attracted local and international media attention<\/a>.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/innovation-help-room.jpg\" alt=\"Amazon Catalyst meeting\" class=\"wp-image-27575\"><\/figure>\n\n<p>&ldquo;We&rsquo;re really proud of the UW Bothell team,&rdquo; says Tao.<\/p>\n\n<p>Amazon Catalyst applications are taken quarterly and the next deadline is March 26. <a href=\"https:\/\/catalyst.amazon.com\/uw\/\">Details are online.<\/a> Here are some of the tips offered by Tao and Oehlert:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n\t\n<li>Have a bold, novel, problem-solving product that meets a need.<\/li>\n\n\t\n<li>The proposals should be practical with the potential to impact a large number of people.<\/li>\n\n\t\n<li>Write your proposal in a clear and compelling way.<\/li>\n\n\t\n<li>The money is intended to launch your product. Be prepared to follow through.<\/li>\n\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p>&ldquo;In terms of thinking big, it&rsquo;s all over the map,&rdquo; says Oehlert.<\/p>\n\n<p>Two students said the presentation helped them rethink how they would pitch their project &ndash; a barbershop app to help schedule, pay and rate haircuts, like a one-click Uber for hair care.<\/p><figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/abyenezer-zerihun--anjir-hossain.jpg\" alt=\"Abyenezer Zerihun and Anjir Hossain\" class=\"wp-image-27576\"><\/figure>\n\n<p>&ldquo;It would be beneficial in time management,&rdquo; said Abyenezer Zerihun (wearing cap at left), a first-year UW Bothell student planning to major in business.<\/p>\n\n<p>His friend Anjir Hossain, a Seattle UW student (human centered design and engineering &rsquo;18), said an Amazon Catalyst grant would help them move &ldquo;from zero to one.&rdquo;<\/p>\n\n<p>Innovation to impact human needs: That&rsquo;s a big part of what UW Bothell is about.<\/p>\n\n<p>&ldquo;It&rsquo;s an outstanding opportunity for anyone with an idea to change the world to get some funding, and we&rsquo;re pleased to be partnering with CoMotion and Amazon,&rdquo; said Jonathan Cluts, UW Bothell director of strategic initiatives.<br \/>\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Invention-minded students, faculty and staff at the University of Washington Bothell are invited to apply for $100,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/catalyst.amazon.com\/programs\/uw\/\">Amazon Catalyst<\/a> grants to help get the innovation started.
