They can also further humanitarian efforts by creating technological solutions that address a wide range of real-world people problems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was this philanthropic aspect that attracted Gurkirat Singh Guliani to the field.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his time at the University of Washington Bothell, Guliani (Computer Science &amp; Software Engineering \u201924) applied his technological skills to preserve endangered languages, help people find jobs and explore solutions for the many wildfires that spread through Washington state. He also worked as a peer health educator at the University\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/student-affairs\/hawrc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Health &amp; Wellness Resource Center<\/a> and was a student ambassador for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/admissions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Undergraduate Admissions<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His intentions were the same in both his research and his campus roles: to make a positive impact on his community, no matter how big or small.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, in recognition of his charitable spirit, Guliani has been named one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/husky100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2024 Husky 100 honorees<\/a>. I am immensely proud to have him represent the University in this way. <svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" aria-hidden=\"true\" viewbox=\"0 0 31.93 23.66\" width=\"34\" style=\"transform:rotate(180deg);transform-origin:center\">\n  <path fill=\"currentColor\" d=\"M19.94 23.655h11.988V12.578h-6.6a6.63 6.63 0 0 1 .662-3.486 8.55 8.55 0 0 1 5.721-4.722V.001a14.8 14.8 0 0 0-8.687 4.768q-3.089 3.606-3.089 9.994v8.893Zm-19.938 0H11.99V12.578h-6.6a7.5 7.5 0 0 1 .631-3.575q1.47-3.277 5.763-4.633V.001a14.54 14.54 0 0 0-8.771 4.788c-2 2.427-3.008 5.781-3.008 9.974Z\"><\/path>\n<\/svg><\/p>\n<cite>Jo Blue, assistant director, Health &amp; Wellness Resource Center&nbsp;<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Education in endangered languages<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the guidance of Min Chen, professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/stem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of STEM<\/a>, Guliani worked on a project titled \u201cMelodic Transcription in Language Documentation and Application\u201d or, simply, MeTILDA.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt is a web-based software to preserve endangered languages,\u201d Guliani explained noting that an endangered language is a language\u202fthat is at risk of no longer being used, fading away as its speakers slowly shift to other languages. According to Guliani, of the more than 7,100 languages in the world half may be in danger of disappearing in the next several decades.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the MeTILDA project, Guliani worked primarily with the language spoken by members of the Blackfeet Nation, one of the 10 largest Indigenous tribes in the United States.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI collaborated with researchers and linguists from the University of Montana and Blackfoot Community College to understand the specific requirements for MeTILDA,\u201d he said, \u201cso that educators can use it in a classroom and effectively teach students with it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter gathering their feedback and needs, I developed features accordingly.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Protecting Punjabi, too<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Gullani detailed his software research and development work as a lead author of a research paper submitted to the International Conference on Multimedia Information Processing and Retrieval, for which Chen served as program chair.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cGurkirat dedicated numerous hours to volunteering for this conference presented by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers,\u201d Chen said. \u201cFor his contribution, he was awarded the IEEE 2023 IRI Outstanding Service Award, which honors long and distinguished service to the IEEE Systems Council at a level of dedication and achievement rarely demonstrated.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guliani said his work on the MeTILDA project taught him the importance of preserving language \u2014 and inspired him to make efforts to preserve his mother tongue, Punjabi, which is in danger of extinction.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor my master&#8217;s project,\u201d he said, \u201cI decided to build a mobile application that can help children learn to speak and write Punjabi.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The application he developed is geared toward anyone 10 years or younger and is designed so that users can either draw or pronounce letters or words, then get immediate feedback on their performance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Care for the campus community<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Guliani\u2019s commitment to human concerns is not just limited to his academic endeavors. He also made it a point to engage deeply with the diverse community at UW Bothell by working as a peer health educator at the HaWRC where he help connect students to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/student-affairs\/care-team\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CARE Team<\/a> Center and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/student-affairs\/counseling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Counseling Center<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"871\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/H100-Gurkirat-Singh-Guliani-871x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31022\" style=\"width:650px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/H100-Gurkirat-Singh-Guliani-871x1024.jpg 871w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/H100-Gurkirat-Singh-Guliani-255x300.jpg 255w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/H100-Gurkirat-Singh-Guliani-768x902.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/H100-Gurkirat-Singh-Guliani-600x705.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2024\/07\/H100-Gurkirat-Singh-Guliani.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 871px) 100vw, 871px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost students are not aware of the resources available to them, and my job is to assess their situation and refer them to the appropriate resources,\u201d Guliani said. \u201cThroughout my time as an undergraduate and graduate student, I became increasingly passionate about mental health as I observed how stress can impact people.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to take this job to raise awareness and help people through difficult times.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Guliani\u2019s desire to help also led him to work as a student ambassador for Office of Admissions office. \u201cI like interacting with prospective students on campus tours,\u201d he said, \u201cand sharing valuable insights into various aspects of campus life and resources such as scholarships, clubs, employment and more so they can make the best out of their Husky experience, too.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Amplifying job opportunities<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The dedication Guliani has to his community extends beyond the campus. In late 2022, for example, when the technology sector experienced turmoil after major companies in the United States laid off thousands of people, Guliani immediately jumped into action to help those affected.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI conjoined with Sai Prameela Konduru, then the CEO of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science Alumni Association, to find the impacted individuals. We circulated a form on relevant social media channels such as LinkedIn and Facebook,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe subsequently did a quick screening of the responses and added job seekers to a WhatsApp group. From there we created a platform for them to ask for referral support and to interact with other job seekers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur efforts supported more than 80 individuals of which more than 30% landed jobs within two months of the initiative,\u201d he reported proudly.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And for his efforts, the BITSAA community recognized Guliani with the 2022 Outstanding Leadership Award.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pursuing passion<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Still eager to learn and do more, Guliani recently applied his skills in the NASA Minority Serving Institutions Wildfire Climate Tech Challenge.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to this, he had little knowledge of wildfires, but that did not deter him from participating \u201cto learn more about wildfires and how I could solve this problem by leveraging technology.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter attending the weekly information sessions, I understood the wildfire domain better,\u201d he said. \u201cMy hope is to find an innovative solution that addresses the escalating issues caused by wildfires exacerbated by climate change.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether wildfires, unemployment or preserving endangered languages, one thing remains the same: In every instance, Guliani works to use technology for human good.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat is my passion,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd my time at UW Bothell has prepared me well to go after it and pursue my dreams.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gurkirat Singh Guliani is passionate about using technology for humanitarian purposes \u2014 and about using his skills to preserve endangered languages, help people find jobs and explore solutions for wildfires.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":121,"featured_media":31016,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_is_archived":false,"_archived_contact_email":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[202,253,211,200,204,1],"tags":[],"school":[421],"class_list":["post-31012","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-campus-news","category-global-impact","category-honors-and-awards","category-profiles","category-students","category-uncategorized","school-school-of-stem"],"acf":{"related_links":{"toggle_visibility":false,"link_1":"","link_2":"","link_3":"","link_4":"","link_5":""},"highlight_box":{"toggle_visibility":false,"title":"","content":"","button":"","button_style":"angled-purple-button","button_screen_reader_text":""},"contact_type_1":{"toggle_visibility":true,"contact_title":"","email":"","phone":"","box":"","address_line_1":"","address_line_2":"","location":""},"contact_type_2":{"toggle_visibility":false,"contact_title":"","email":"","phone":"","box":"","address_line_1":"","address_line_2":"","location":""},"social_media":{"toggle_visibility":false,"facebook_url":"","instagram_url":"","linkedin_url":"","twitter_url":"","youtube_url":""},"blog_archive_sidebar_visibility":false},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
