{"id":30104,"date":"2023-12-15T13:01:12","date_gmt":"2023-12-15T21:01:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=30104"},"modified":"2023-12-15T13:06:55","modified_gmt":"2023-12-15T21:06:55","slug":"research-from-the-heart","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2023\/12\/15\/research-from-the-heart","title":{"rendered":"Research from the heart\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 695,000 people died from heart disease in 2021 \u2014 which is one in every five deaths in the United States, making it the leading cause of death for people of most racial and ethnic groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heart disease is most commonly detected through an electrocardiogram, a simple test that checks heart rhythm and electrical activity. \u201cSensors called electrodes are attached to the skin and are used to\u202fdetect the electrical signals produced by a person\u2019s heart each time it beats,\u201d said Vi Nguyen, a senior in the University of Washington Bothell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/stem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of STEM<\/a>. \u201cThese signals are recorded by a machine and are reviewed\u202fby a doctor to see if they indicate something unusual.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The test itself is relatively short and straightforward, but it also can be a bit uncomfortable. \u201cThe test\u202finvolves attaching electrodes to a person\u2019s arms, legs and chest using a gel that contains many chloride ions which allows electron conduction from the skin surface to the ECG machine,\u201d Nguyen, an Electrical Engineering major, explained. \u201cEven though it\u2019s not painful, the gel is cold and sticky, and can often irritate people\u2019s skin.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wanting to improve ECG recording methods, Nguyen developed non-contact electroencephalography and electrocardiography\u202felectrodes \u2014 or, in other words, electrodes that do not require the use of gel. Her research was supported by a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/connected-learning\/news\/2023\/06\/01\/2023-summer-founders-fellow-award-recipients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Founders Fellows Summer Research Stipend<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Executing the electrodes<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional electrodes for ECGs are made of silver, but Nguyen made hers out of copper. \u201cIt is more cost effective, and the presence of a large number of free electrons in copper makes it a good conductor of electricity,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"865\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/12\/Nguyen-Vi-copper-electrodes.jpg\" alt=\"Copper plates.\" class=\"wp-image-30110\" style=\"width:500px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/12\/Nguyen-Vi-copper-electrodes.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/12\/Nguyen-Vi-copper-electrodes-277x300.jpg 277w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/12\/Nguyen-Vi-copper-electrodes-768x830.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/12\/Nguyen-Vi-copper-electrodes-600x649.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ngyuen cut a one-inch circle out of a copper sheet and soldered it onto a wire to create the left arm electrode and then repeated the same process to create the right arm electrode. \u201cI had never soldered anything before, let alone something so small,\u201d she said. \u201cIt required the use of a reflow oven, which I\u2019ve never used before. The process definitely took a lot of trial and error.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The risk of failure, however, also sparks the chance of discovery. \u201cThe most rewarding part of this research was learning how to problem solve on my own,\u201d Nguyen said. \u201cI gave myself permission to make mistakes and learn from them \u2014 and that made it all the more exciting when I finally got it right.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She celebrated her success by testing the soldered electrodes on a classmate\u2019s arms. When implemented, Nguyen was able to see slight signals from the ECG but only if she pressed down substantially on the electrodes so that they made intense contact with the skin. Still, she said, \u201cthe signal also did not appear consistently.
