{"id":30001,"date":"2023-11-30T16:17:21","date_gmt":"2023-12-01T00:17:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=30001"},"modified":"2023-11-30T17:15:02","modified_gmt":"2023-12-01T01:15:02","slug":"minding-test-anxiety","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2023\/11\/30\/minding-test-anxiety","title":{"rendered":"Minding test anxiety\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Most students can become a bit nervous before taking a test. For some that nervousness can escalate to panic. This can cause racing thoughts and an inability to concentrate \u2014 and is often paired with physical symptoms such as an increased heart rate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When severe, test anxiety can derail weeks, and even months, of hard work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2017, researchers at the University of Washington Bothell conducted a Healthy Minds Study and found that 22% of students met the criteria for anxiety disorder. \u201cAs striking as this data is, it does not include the number of students who do not have anxiety and yet are still deleteriously affected by negative feelings and anxiety in stressful test-taking situations,\u201d said Dr. Bryan White, teaching professor in UW Bothell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/stem\/faculty\/chemistrysci\/bfinley\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of STEM<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>White has always been open with his students about his own battle with anxiety and depression and said in doing so students have felt comfortable disclosing their struggles, too. \u201cAbout 15% of students in each of my classes are dealing with generalized anxiety,\u201d he said, \u201cand then I have another 15% who also struggle with anxiety but just surrounding test-taking.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recognizing the severity of the situation, White partnered with Dr. Linda Eaton, assistant professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/nhs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Nursing &amp; Health Studies<\/a>, to see if they could find a way to mitigate students\u2019 stress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Power of mindfulness<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In October 2020, Eaton was featured in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2020\/10\/21\/cancer-pain-hypnosis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UW Bothell news article<\/a> describing her research using hypnosis and relaxation recordings to manage chronic pain in cancer survivors. \u201cBryan read the article and contacted me to tell me how interested he was in my research,\u201d Eaton recalled. \u201cWe met and decided to collaborate on our current study which was funded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/research\/srcp-grant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">UW Bothell\u2019s Scholarship, Research and Creative Practice Grant program<\/a>.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-poster-1-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"Two people standing next to a poster.\" class=\"wp-image-30007\" style=\"width:650px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-poster-1-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-poster-1-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-poster-1-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-poster-1-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-poster-1-2048x1536.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-poster-1-1920x1440.jpeg 1920w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-poster-1-1200x900.jpeg 1200w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-poster-1-600x450.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Eaton and White thought mindfulness could work in reducing test anxiety in students, too. To find out, the professors put a call out to see if any students would be interested in joining the research team to evaluate a mindfulness recording with students enrolled in White\u2019s introductory biology course. To their delight, more than 50 applied. \u201cIn the end we could only hire three,\u201d Eaton said, \u201cbut seeing there was that much interest was really nice.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The student researchers hired include Emerald Chuesh, a junior majoring in Health Studies and minoring in Biology; Maggie Goros, a senior majoring in Biology; and Vivian Lam, a junior majoring in Biology and minoring in Health Studies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the first things they did was create an advisory board that represented each of the University\u2019s five schools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe felt it was important to get a diverse range of majors in our study because text anxiety doesn\u2019t just affect people from one specific major \u2014 it can affect anyone. We wanted a good representation with people from different backgrounds and experiences,\u201d Lam said. \u201cI want to note that we had more than 68 applicants which I think speaks to how many people want to look to mindfulness to help with feelings of depression and anxiety.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Testing the tool<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Next the student researchers got to work on the mindfulness recording, which is roughly seven minutes long and incorporates pieces from different mindfulness practices. \u201cThere is a breathing exercise, a body scan and a segment on positive affirmations,\u201d Goros said. \u201cWe tested a variety of mindfulness practices on our student panel, and the three we included proved to be the most impactful.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only did the student researchers decide on <em>what <\/em>would be in the recording, but they decided on <em>who <\/em>would be the voice for the recording as well. \u201cAfter we created the transcript, we solicited different readers to decide whose voice would be the most calming,\u201d Chuesh said. \u201cWe also tested them on the advisory panel and then did individual coaching with the reader to make sure it appealed to the most people.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once finalized, the team, including Eaton and White, put the recording to the test. They used a randomized controlled trial design where students in White\u2019s introductory biology course were randomly assigned to one of two groups \u2014 the intervention group who listened to the mindfulness recording or the control group who did not.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All students, regardless of their group assignment, completed questionnaires about their stress level prior to each exam and wore a wrist monitor while taking the exams to record heart rate data, a physiological indicator of stress.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Promising results<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Students in the intervention group listened to the recording immediately prior to taking the exams whereas students in the control group used the seven minutes to follow their normal routine.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-advisory-group.jpeg\" alt=\"A group photo.\" class=\"wp-image-30008\" style=\"width:650px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-advisory-group.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-advisory-group-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-advisory-group-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/DCX-mindfulness-advisory-group-600x450.jpeg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe found that listening to the recording reduced the increase in heart rate due to the exam by an average of eight beats per minute,\u201d White said. \u201cFifty-six percent of the participants said they would continue to use the recording on future exams.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the initial results seem promising, Eaton and White said because of the small sample size of 29 they need to test the intervention in a fully powered study to determine its effectiveness in reducing test anxiety.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are going to submit for further funding to continue studying this intervention,\u201d Eaton said. \u201cAnd we hope to have students as part of the research team because they are invaluable.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-box-shadow is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-f611be13 wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"border-style:none;border-width:0px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--50)\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-h-6-font-size\">Listen to the mindfulness recording to help alleviate test stress or anxiety.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/reduce_test_anxiety_audio.m4a\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>More to learn<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In the next study, Eaton and White hope to gather more information as well as educate students about mindfulness. \u201cI would like to get heart rate data from students during lectures, group work and exams,\u201d White said. \u201cIn addition, I think it would be great to do some training on mindfulness prior to exposing students to the recording.
