{"id":29743,"date":"2023-09-22T12:19:31","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T19:19:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=29743"},"modified":"2025-05-09T11:08:58","modified_gmt":"2025-05-09T18:08:58","slug":"how-is-work-in-residential-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2023\/09\/22\/how-is-work-in-residential-life","title":{"rendered":"Residential Life staff &#8220;going big&#8221; for new Summit Hall"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>In this Q&amp;A, Katie Horowitz, director of Residential Life and assistant dean for student engagement, and Dion Crommarty, assistant director of Residential Life, answer a few questions about their work in and the many new opportunities they are creating for students to connect, learn and thrive.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Q: How do you try to innovate?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dion:<\/strong> It\u2019s always about being willing to set the foundation to try new things.\u202fWe are working to get students\u2019 feedback. If something doesn\u2019t work, we are prepared to regroup and try something else.\u202f\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Katie: <\/strong>Everything is new this year, from our new staff teams to our new housing, new dining options and new events.\u202fWe are going big with our programming.\u202fWe are trying new things, and it is exciting and scary.\u202fWe are always looking at national trends and keeping our ideas fresh.\u202f\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are kicking off the school year with Welcome Week, Sept. 25-Oct. 1. Students move in on Monday and some will participate in Convocation on Tuesday. Wednesday night we are putting an arcade in the Campus Library and a laser light show on the Plaza.\u202fThen on Friday, we are producing our largest event and going until midnight: ARC After Dark is all about fun, connection and celebration with a glow-in-the-dark theme.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are creating reasons for students to stay on campus into the evenings and weekends.\u202fStudents are going to have so many activities this Welcome Week!\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Q: What is the core of your work?<\/strong>\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dion: <\/strong>I am student-first. Student advocacy and student voice are most important. If students aren\u2019t happy, then I\u2019m not happy.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Katie: <\/strong>Creating opportunities for students to connect, learn and thrive.\u202fI want them to feel like they belong at UW Bothell.\u202fCollege should be a transformative experience \u2014 while also fun! (Dion says \u201cDitto!\u201d)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One way we do that in Residential Life is through quarterly Husky Chats.\u202fAll residents meet with their resident advisers (RAs) to connect about specific topics at least once a quarter.\u202fMentoring and supporting students is the foundation of our community.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re also laying the groundwork for our Residential Hall Association council this year, aiming to give a voice to all residential students on campus. Right now, we&#8217;re starting off as an informal group, but we&#8217;re planning to be official by the 2024 autumn quarter. Along the way, we&#8217;re really focusing on making decisions and giving feedback that positively impacts our community.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Q: How does UW Bothell\u2019s strategic priorities of strengthening diversity and equity, and enhancing community and campus engagement fit into your work?<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dion: <\/strong>This year, one of our focuses has been diversity, equity, inclusion and justice training \u2014 and understanding how we have impact on the residential community, the UW Bothell community and the larger community as a whole.\u202fWhen we say building community, we want <em>all <\/em>students to be included in that community.\u202fWe are always critically thinking about who is not at the table and making sure that we include those voices.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Katie:<\/strong>\u202fAnd we are all about enhancing campus engagement.\u202fUsing a curricular approach, we are strengthening partnerships on campus, and developing new and stronger programs for students.\u202fOur goal is for students to know they belong.\u202fIn Residential Life, our tagline this year is \u201cThis is home!\u201d\u202f\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A couple of collaborations coming up this year include bringing the Collaboratory to Summit Hall for events and bringing in the academic advisers to the Summit main lounge.\u202fOur RAs are super pumped to build a tight-knit community with our residents. They\u2019re even linking up with campus partners to make our halls feel more like home. From hosting movie nights with discussions to inviting speakers to discuss topics such as universal design, we\u2019re doing all sorts of cool stuff to make our residence hall <em>the <\/em>place to be.\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Q: What are you working on today?<\/strong>\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Katie:<\/strong> We are working to open the Residential Village to students, and increasing the scope and scale of Welcome Week events.\u202fWe have been challenged to go bold and that is what you will see during Welcome Week and throughout this academic year.\u202fJust wait until Springfest!\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dion:<\/strong> Everything!\u202fI want this campus to be a sticky campus. We want students to stay on campus and build community.\u202fOur team is working on energizing the residential life team and planning programs.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Q: How does who you are show up in your work?<\/strong>\u202f<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dion:<\/strong>\u202fI am always high energy.\u202fI want work to be fun. I try to create a work environment that includes others, and I am always inviting others in.\u202fI come from a place of care.\u202fI want to give students the amazing college experience that I had!\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Katie:\u202f<\/strong>I am always working to make things better.\u202fCreating new ways for students to engage on campus is so exciting!\u202fI love getting others involved and excited about student engagement.\u202f\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Q: Where is your favorite spot on campus \u2014 and why?<\/strong>\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dion:<\/strong> It used to be The Commons in Commons Hall, I loved watching students hang out, play pool and build community.\u202fNow it\u2019s the Terrace Dining Pavilion.\u202fSeeing that same energy level from our UW Bothell community \u2014 and the food, of course!\u202f\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Katie: <\/strong>Right now, it\u2019s walking up the Promenade between Summit Hall and the Terrace Dining Pavilion.\u202fThis project was a long time coming, and seeing this space come to life is amazing.\u202fWatching the excitement on students\u2019 faces as they walk through the space, it has all been worth it!\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Q: What is your favorite thing about working at UW Bothell?<\/strong>\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Dion:<\/strong>\u202fI love the UW Bothell family atmosphere on campus.\u202fI love the people! I am always saying \u201chi\u201d to everyone I meet.
