{"id":29490,"date":"2023-08-24T14:56:10","date_gmt":"2023-08-24T21:56:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=29490"},"modified":"2024-01-05T11:49:12","modified_gmt":"2024-01-05T19:49:12","slug":"from-the-forest-to-the-lab-high-schoolers-get-hands-on-learning-in-environmental-workshop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2023\/08\/24\/from-the-forest-to-the-lab-high-schoolers-get-hands-on-learning-in-environmental-workshop","title":{"rendered":"From the forest to the lab: High schoolers get hands-on learning in environmental workshop\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Gathering in labs, woods and creeks \u2014 and working alongside recent graduates from the University of Washington Bothell \u2014 local high school students spent two weeks this summer learning about science and the environment on campus and at the Environmental Education &amp; Research Center at Saint Edward State Park in Kenmore, Washington.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great for people of any age to understand the history and biology of the area in which they live,\u201d said Dr. Jeffrey Jensen, teaching professor in UW Bothell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/stem\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of STEM<\/a>. \u201cFor young people in particular, this means they will care more about their environment and be more likely to be good stewards.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s workshop, which covered stream biology, geomorphology and geography, grew out of a similar two-day event Jensen led in 2022 where he instructed students about fish and the history of the watershed, including the presence of Indigenous people now and in the past.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was a successful run, and we decided to expand this year to include mapping, geographic information systems\u202fand geology,\u201d Jensen said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workshops were supported by local partner iUrban Teen, an educational program that brings together underrepresented teens and young adults for career exploration and mentoring.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Local partnerships<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>iUrban Teen played a key role in the success of the workshops by reaching out into its community to recruit participants. During the workshop, Williams and Skiba then acted as mentors for the high school participants, as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe wanted to implement an educational model in which undergraduate students serve as docents and mentors of youth,\u201d said Dr. Santiago Lopez, faculty director of UW Bothell programs at the EERC and associate professor in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>. \u201cThis is a very effective model that could be transformative for both undergraduate students and youth as they explore potential career pathways and college degree options.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>International connections<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The program was also made possible through a 2021 grant from the National Research Foundation of Korea for \u201cAn International Comparison Study of Transnational Citizenship and Social Participation Competencies in the Post-COVID Era.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leading the research project were Lopez; Dr. Jin-Kyu Jung, professor in the School of IAS; and Dr. Bo Ae Chun, former visiting scholar in the School of IAS and current associate professor at the Department of Geography Education at Catholic Kwandong University in South Korea.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team project seeks to study community and examine changes in social participation competency and a sense of place though environmental monitoring and education in the two countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In line with these goals \u2014 and principles of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/connected-learning\/global\/coil-initiative\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Collaborative Online International Learning<\/a> \u2014 the team has been building partnerships with local and global communities and developing new environmental curriculum.\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202f\u201cIt\u2019s a community engagement model that includes both local high school and undergraduate students, as well as global students from the high schools and university in Korea,\u201d Jung said. \u201cIt provides an opportunity to engage students in applied environmental research and nature-based learning and, by doing so, gain social participation competency and transnational citizenship.\u201d\u202f&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202fAnd of course, Jung added, students get to have fun while being active outside in natural settings and getting hands-on involvement in their community.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Living laboratory<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The high school students were introduced to concepts such as stream biology, hydrology and salmon lifecycles. And their outdoor observations began on the first day of the workshop on the UW Bothell campus wetland where they practiced habitat surveillance and collected samples of macroinvertebrates from North Creek.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202fThe following day, they worked in the lab at the EERC where they used microscopes to get a closer look at the specimens they had collected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u202fNestled along the northeast shore of Lake Washington, the EERC opened in 2022 as the result of a partnership between UW Bothell and Washington State Parks. The center is in the former Saint Edward Seminary building that was transformed into a site for the appreciation, research, study and stewardship of Pacific Northwest ecosystems.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe EERC provides environmentally centered community engagement opportunities,\u201d Jung said. \u201cIt gives our diverse students the experience and opportunity to serve in a mentoring role with youth who are often from diverse and marginalized communities. Here, the students got hands-on experience with multispectral drones, hypsometers and other GPS tools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each day, the students would also engage via videoconferencing with their South Korean peers, who were completing a similar workshop with a curriculum unique to their area in Gangneung.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Collecting data<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The multiple chances to engage in hands-on learning were critical to the program\u2019s design, said Jensen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStudents are often told how things are done, but it\u2019s less common for students to do their own data collection and analysis,\u201d he said. \u201cThe techniques we used are the same used by professional biologists and geographers. It can help spark an interest in topics they may be unfamiliar with and fuel the desire to explore them further.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSeeing the types of challenges and research that can be done locally gives students a better sense of how their interest in the environment might lead them to environmental careers,\u201d Jensen said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spending intentional time in local environments is a powerful part of the program, said Jung.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe workshop helps the students develop a stronger awareness of, connection to and engagement with various environmental issues,\u201d Jung said. \u201cIt also provides them with the ability and capacity to depict, analyze and advocate for solutions to environmental issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFor the undergraduate students involved,\u201d he added, \u201cthey\u202falso learn what it means to actively engage in community environmental issues and activism and to work as mentors for youth.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<?xml encoding=\"utf-8\" ?><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" aria-hidden=\"true\" viewbox=\"0 0 31.93 23.66\" width=\"34\">\n  <path fill=\"currentColor\" d=\"M19.94 23.655h11.988V12.578h-6.6a6.63 6.63 0 0 1 .662-3.486 8.55 8.55 0 0 1 5.721-4.722V.001a14.8 14.8 0 0 0-8.687 4.768q-3.089 3.606-3.089 9.994v8.893Zm-19.938 0H11.99V12.578h-6.6a7.5 7.5 0 0 1 .631-3.575q1.47-3.277 5.763-4.633V.001a14.54 14.54 0 0 0-8.771 4.788c-2 2.427-3.008 5.781-3.008 9.974Z\"><\/path>\n<\/svg><p>It&rsquo;s a community engagement model that includes both local high school and undergraduate students, as well as global students from the high schools and university in Korea.
