{"id":27267,"date":"2023-05-26T17:50:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-26T17:50:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/?p=27267"},"modified":"2023-11-28T11:14:21","modified_gmt":"2023-11-28T19:14:21","slug":"class-of-2023-to-be-honored-at-t-mobile-park-in-32nd-commencement-ceremony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2023\/05\/26\/class-of-2023-to-be-honored-at-t-mobile-park-in-32nd-commencement-ceremony","title":{"rendered":"Class of 2023 to be honored at T-Mobile Park in 32nd Commencement Ceremony"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"560\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/large-32-commencement-banner.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29993\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.9541984732824427;width:840px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/large-32-commencement-banner.jpg 560w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/large-32-commencement-banner-300x157.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 560px) 100vw, 560px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The University of Washington Bothell\u2019s graduating class of 2023 will take the stage at T-Mobile Park in\u202fthis year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/commencement\/\">Commencement Ceremony<\/a> on June 11 \u2014 the first time in three years that the ceremony will return to the stadium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the 2022-23 academic year,\u202fUW Bothell will award 1,818 undergraduate degrees, 195 graduate degrees and 12 teaching certificates to a class ranging in age from 19 to 62 years old \u2014\u202fand hailing from as far away as South Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students receiving their master\u2019s degree\u202fwill also be recognized in the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/commencement\/ceremony\/graduate-hooding-ceremony\">Graduate Hooding Ceremony<\/a> on Saturday, June 10, on\u202fthe UW Bothell sports field. In this traditional ceremony, graduate students are presented by their faculty with a master\u2019s hood bearing the colors of their program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember graduation at UW Bothell as incredibly meaningful,\u201d\u202fsaid Priya Frank, director of equity, diversity and inclusion at the Seattle Art Museum and this year\u2019s keynote speaker.\u202f\u201cTo be able to help celebrate the amazing graduates of this year\u2019s class and all they have accomplished is truly a full circle honor for me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">From classroom to career<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"245\" height=\"367\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/hero-priya-headshot.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29995\" style=\"width:400px;height:600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/hero-priya-headshot.jpg 245w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/hero-priya-headshot-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 245px) 100vw, 245px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Priya Frank headshot<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Frank has a long history of both educational and work experiences at the University of Washington.<br>She received her undergraduate degree in Communications and in American Ethnic Studies from the University of Washington in 2004. She then worked there in various roles while pursuing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/graduate\/cultural-studies\">Master of Arts in Cultural Studies degree<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/\">School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a> at UW Bothell, which she received in 2011. She also later served as\u202fthe IAS associate director for advancement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cUW Bothell is a place where\u202fI came into my own,\u202flike I was supported for exactly who I was and how I approached the work I was doing. As a result, I felt a lot of agency\u202fto make change happen,\u201d Frank said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Cultural Studies program was a real life-changer for me. It gave me a lot of opportunity to try new things,\u201d she said. \u201cHaving been in the workforce for several years, it was such a benefit for me to just be able to center myself and think about \u2018What am I interested in?\u2019 and dip my toes within an environment that felt safe.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frank says that much of her current professional work in diversity, equity and inclusion at SAM is a continuation of her time and experiences across the UW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seeds of a lifelong community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAt UW Bothell, I finally felt like I had found community within my academic experience,\u201d Frank said, adding that the small class sizes gave her an opportunity to closely interact with both professors and fellow classmates. \u201cOur two years together allowed us to see each other grow professionally and personally in incredible ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the people Frank met at UW Bothell have become lifelong connections, she said. Her former classmate and now close friend, Paul Johnson, is currently the vice president of people and\u202fculture and the chief diversity officer at the Seattle Symphony \u2014\u202fjust across the street from SAM. They continue to support each other in their shared DEI work within\u202fthe Seattle arts scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just really special to see where many of us have ended up and how we continue to support each other,\u201d Frank said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same goes for her professors. Frank noted that her portfolio adviser from her master\u2019s program, Dr. Susan Harewood, associate professor in the School of IAS, continues to be someone she looks to for advice as a mentor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s wonderful to see that kind of continued investment and care,\u201d Frank said. \u201cThere are so many seeds the professors planted with us and to see where those seeds are growing in different areas \u2014 locally, nationally, internationally \u2014 is just really inspiring. It gives me hope.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beyond boundaries and limitations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, at the Seattle Art Museum, Frank is enjoying the opportunity to see her own work centering on diversity and inclusion make a difference for others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cChange doesn\u2019t happen overnight, so it\u2019s exciting\u202fto see the investments made in equity work seven plus years ago starting to come to fruition in multiple ways \u2014 and it\u2019s important to celebrate that while recognizing the work never ends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frank started at SAM in 2016 as the associate director for community programs and was promoted in 2020 to her current position. That same year, she was also recognized for her career and dedication to the arts communities when she received the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2020\/05\/28\/alumni-award-priya-frank\">Alumna of the Year Award at UW Bothell<\/a>.<br>\u201cAs somebody who\u2019s a first-generation college graduate and the first in my family born in the U.S., being able to celebrate at Commencement a class that reflects a lot of the experiences I had means all the more,\u201d Frank said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When asked what advice she has for this year\u2019s graduates, Frank said, \u201cDon\u2019t be afraid of the hard stuff. Even if you\u2019ve never imagined yourself doing something, if it scares you in a good way, give it a shot because you never know where it could lead. Whether you succeed or whether you fail, it\u2019s actually not as relevant as the experience itself and what you can gain from that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s about visualizing yourself beyond the boundaries and limitations that society often gives us and going beyond our ancestors\u2019 wildest dreams,\u201d she said. \u201cWe don\u2019t have to let everyone else\u2019s definition of success define us. We pave our own way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solidarity in solitude<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s student speaker at Commencement is Isabeau Rosen, president of the Associated Students of the University of Washington Bothell and a junior double majoring in Media &amp; Communication Studies and in Culture,\u202fLiterature &amp; the Arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"233\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/isabeau.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-29996\" style=\"width:600px;height:400px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/isabeau.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/11\/isabeau-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Isabeau Rosen, junior in IAS and ASUWB president<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Having graduated from high school and then started her college education during the pandemic, Rosen said she recognizes the struggles many of this year\u2019s graduates had to overcome to get to where they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEveryone looks back on the \u2018Zoom time\u2019 as \u2018glad we\u2019re out of it,\u2019 but I actually think it created a lot of really unique opportunities that people don\u2019t reflect on enough,\u201d Rosen said. \u201cThat\u2019s sort of what I\u2019ve tried to do as president \u2014 to highlight what people tend to think of as downfalls or \u2018I had to settle for this or work around that.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have\u202fexperience that no one else can claim.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While connecting with other students and faculty may have required more effort or a different approach during and right after the pandemic, Rosen also said it has opened the door for connecting in new ways. \u201cIf I was on a traditional first-year campus experience, I would be meeting people but wouldn\u2019t have had the same level of solidarity,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A sense of pride<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As the student government president, Rosen saw this nontraditional way of connecting as an opportunity to help bridge gaps between the challenges of having to teach a class virtually, versus the experience of virtual learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though she found a silver lining in the virtual learning environment, Rosen has enjoyed engaging with students, faculty and staff in person over the last two years and is excited to play a role in celebrating the achievements of this year\u2019s graduates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCommencement is a big deal. It is an end to a very large and very important chapter in your life. You\u2019re going on to more school, going on to the workforce or just into the real world in general,\u201d Rosen said. \u201cOne of the main things I want students to leave with is pride that they went to UW Bothell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rosen added that if there\u2019s one piece of advice she could share with the Class of 2023, it would be Lewis Carroll\u2019s quote that, \u201cIf you don\u2019t know where you\u2019re going, every road will get you there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A celebration of achievements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 2023 Commencement Ceremony will begin at noon on Sunday, June 11, with doors opening at 10:30 a.m. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/commencement\/guests\/tickets\">Entrance tickets<\/a> are required for all guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m most excited about Commencement being back at T-Mobile Park this year,\u201d said Lisa Walker, UW Bothell\u2019s director of Ceremonies &amp; Events. \u201cThere\u2019s something to be said for one big ceremony \u2014 there is so much energy in the room, the parents are excited and the students are excited.
