{"id":2551,"date":"2016-04-14T09:04:08","date_gmt":"2016-04-14T09:04:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=2551"},"modified":"2023-06-08T19:53:25","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T19:53:25","slug":"codebreakers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2016\/04\/14\/codebreakers","title":{"rendered":"Student codebreakers recognized"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n      <figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/codebreakers.jpg\" alt=\"codebreakers\" class=\"wp-image-27902\"><\/figure>\n\n          <p>\n\tTwo teams of University of Washington Bothell students were recognized in an international codebreaking contest, also known as cryptanalysis of ciphers or secret writing.<br \/>\n\t<br \/>\n\tAssociate Professor of Mathematics Jennifer McLoud-Mann says they took part in the Kryptos contest, which is organized by Central Washington University and conducted online over four days each April.<br \/>\n\t<br \/>\n\tContestants are given three challenges, each with a brief scenario together with an encoded message. Using clues in the scenario or ciphertext, the goal is to discover the original English message in plain text.<br \/>\n\t<br \/>\n\tThis year, 205 undergraduate students in 92 teams competed. Forty-eight teams were deemed master codebreakers, proficient codebreakers or amateur codebreakers, based on whether they solved all three, two or one of the challenges.<br \/>\n\t<br \/>\n\tOne UW Bothell team solved two of the three challenges. The team is made up of Wendy Coll, education secondary middle level math major; and two computer science and software engineering majors, Sam Williams and Keith McAfee.<br \/>\n\t<br \/>\n\tThe other UW Bothell team solved one of the challenges.
