It invites viewers to &ldquo;join students in college classrooms to hear lectures on topics ranging from the American Revolution to 9-11.&rdquo;<\/p>\n<p>\n\t&quot;In the Intro to African-American studies we&#039;ve been talking about a lot of current events and how the histories and social movements of African-Americans are continuing to inform contemporary policies in the U.S., and so the chance to be able to bring something like this discussion of mass incarceration, origins of mass incarceration to the class but then to have that class be broadcast nationally is a very exciting way to continue the spirit of the class, the spirit of Intro to African-American Studies as a nationally significant engagement with a series of cutting-edge issues,&quot; Berger said.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBerger is the author of &ldquo;Captive Nation: Black Prison Organizing in the Civil Rights Era.&rdquo; He says his research is interested in bottoms-up explorations of identity, politics, activism and the state.<\/p>\n<p>\n\tBerger says he sees his role as a teacher in helping students think critically and creatively &ndash; about both course material and society at large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\n\tA CSPAN crew was on the University of Washington Bothell campus Thursday to film Dan Berger&#039;s Introduction to African-American Studies class.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":6,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_is_archived":false,"_archived_contact_email":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[202,204],"tags":[269],"school":[],"class_list":["post-2460","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-campus-news","category-students","tag-diversity"],"acf":{"related_links":{"toggle_visibility":false,"link_1":null,"link_2":null,"link_3":null,"link_4":null,"link_5":null},"highlight_box":{"toggle_visibility":false,"title":"","content":"","button":null,"button_style":"angled-purple-button","button_screen_reader_text":""},"contact_type_1":{"toggle_visibility":true,"contact_title":"","email":"","phone":"","box":"","address_line_1":"","address_line_2":"","location":""},"contact_type_2":{"toggle_visibility":false,"contact_title":"","email":"","phone":"","box":"","address_line_1":"","address_line_2":"","location":""},"social_media":{"toggle_visibility":false,"facebook_url":"","instagram_url":"","linkedin_url":"","twitter_url":"","youtube_url":""},"blog_archive_sidebar_visibility":false},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.0 -
