{"id":20772,"date":"2021-09-20T16:17:38","date_gmt":"2021-09-20T16:17:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=20772"},"modified":"2024-04-03T10:41:29","modified_gmt":"2024-04-03T17:41:29","slug":"students-provide-health-hope","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2021\/09\/20\/students-provide-health-hope","title":{"rendered":"Students provide health and hope"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\u201cI feel seen and heard, like I matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These heartfelt words from Amber Fox cut to the core of the work of student in the University of Washington Bothell\u2019s course Population-based Health in Community Practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fox, a resident at the Everett Gospel Mission Women &amp; Children\u2019s Shelter, is used to being dismissed and dehumanized for being a homeless addict. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOne time I was really depressed and covered myself in blankets. I wanted to hide from myself,\u201d Fox said. \u201cBut then the students checked on me, really listened to me. They brought me out and went for a walk with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey were so kind. They didn\u2019t make me feel \u2018less than.\u2019 You can\u2019t imagine what that\u2019s like unless you\u2019ve walked in shoes like mine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Community practice is a key component of the <a href=\"\/nhs\">School of Nursing &amp; Health Studies<\/a> course taught by Dr. Mabel Ezeonwu, associate professor, and Tara James, lecturer. The Everett women\u2019s shelter has worked with these faculty and students in the course for several years \u2014 and continued to open its doors to them during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An unusually natural fit<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the other community partners slated to offer projects for the course in summer 2020 declined as the academic quarter neared, and Ezeonwu was left to do some quick thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis was the last quarter for some of our students, and they needed practical experience to graduate,\u201d she said. \u201cPartnerships take time to develop. You can\u2019t just walk in and say, \u2018Hi, we have students who can work with the people you serve.\u2019 We have to educate them on the value of what we have to offer and their responsibilities as a partner. Bowman had an idea immediately: the Des Moines Area Food Bank, where she was a regular volunteer. \u201cFood bank leadership knew Karen and trusted her recommendation to work with us,\u201d said Ezeonwu. \u201cWe were able to get our students in, they were able to graduate on time, and we have a continuing partner!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amanda Day, a nurse in the summer 2021 course who works at the Snohomish County Jail, said, \u201cI was a little surprised that we would be working with a food bank. But I quickly learned that nursing crosses into many areas. Our work is not just in a clinical setting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bowman, who received her bachelor\u2019s degree at UW Bothell, said she was \u201cthrilled\u201d for the opportunity to make this new connection with DMAFB. \u201cI knew it might be seen as an unusual pairing,\u201d she said, \u201cbut the population served by the food bank represents those the students see in their everyday work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNurses are trained to always look and sense and question. Working with the food bank put that training to great use.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A healthy community<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For River Leonovich, a nurse at Hospice of the Northwest, the partnership with the food bank gave life to the past year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter meeting with the cohort over Zoom for much of the program, it was really great to see each other in person,\u201d Leonovich said. \u201cThere\u2019s no substitute for working together to serve the community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"770\" height=\"578\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/NHS-community-health-food-bank-angle-lake.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25301\" style=\"width:1030px;height:687px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/NHS-community-health-food-bank-angle-lake.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/NHS-community-health-food-bank-angle-lake-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/NHS-community-health-food-bank-angle-lake-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/NHS-community-health-food-bank-angle-lake-600x450.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Families get tips on how to stay active and prepare nutritious meals from nursing students<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While some of the projects the students were tasked with took place at the food bank, such as giving presentations on body mechanics and outdoor heat exposure, much of the time was spent at Angle Lake Park in Des Moines. There, they engaged with children and their families through the DMAFB\u2019s summer meal program, distributing nutritious lunches, playing games, answering health-related questions and demonstrating the importance of getting the entire family to stay active.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause of the pandemic, kids didn\u2019t have access to P.E. (physical education), and some of them live in neighborhoods that aren\u2019t conducive to walking or playing,\u201d said Merhawit Kasay, a nurse who plans to begin a DNP program in 2022. \u201cWe found they were very receptive to learning some basic exercises and introductory yoga poses that they could do with their parents and siblings at home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe stressed the importance of being active for one hour every day,\u201d she said. \u201cI felt good being able to contribute to the health of the community in that way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rethinking first impressions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the women and children\u2019s shelter in Everett, students first undergo Poverty 101, a training conducted by Suzanne Peterson that showcases the unique challenges of long-term poverty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"770\" height=\"567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/NHS-community-health-shelter-yoga.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25302\" style=\"width:1030px;height:687px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/NHS-community-health-shelter-yoga.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/NHS-community-health-shelter-yoga-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/NHS-community-health-shelter-yoga-768x566.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/NHS-community-health-shelter-yoga-600x442.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Nursing students teach basic yoga poses to women served by the Everet Gospel Mission Women &amp; Children&#8217;s Shelter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe discuss the first impressions we all form when we see an unsheltered person,\u201d said Peterson, shelter director, \u201cand how unfair it is to that person when we\u2019ve labeled them without even asking for their backstory. The training both challenges and changes the students\u2019 approach to the people they care for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gillian Estrada, a nurse in the newborn intensive care unit at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, said that the training helped her think about the generational cycle of poverty in relation to the parents of some of her patients. \u201cWe can be so quick to make generalizations about people based on their histories,\u201d Estrada said. \u201cThe experience at the shelter opened my eyes to biases I wasn\u2019t aware I had. Many of our parents in the NICU come from similar backgrounds as the residents at EGM, with sometimes similar stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis work in the community has given me a fuller picture of what my families in the NICU experience on a daily basis.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working directly with the residents and their children was also an eye-opener for Dawn Schober, a nurse in the inpatient behavioral health unit at Providence. She described a memorable group activity during which she and the other students were making yogurt pops with the kids. She hopes to teach other women served by the shelter her new-found skill.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Fox said she appreciated the opportunity to share her personal history with the nurses. A 4.0 student growing up, she was a certified medical administrative assistant with a perfect working history before addiction took over her life, a trait she inherited from her parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEven with an education, a good job and three kids to raise, I couldn\u2019t resist the power drugs had over me,\u201d she said. \u201cI lost everything, including my kids. The students listened to my stories and made me feel worthwhile, not just an addict with mental issues. They saw me as a mother who loves her kids and who will do anything to get them back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHaving them listen to me really boosted my confidence,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m more hopeful, which has helped me cope and try new things. I just learned how to knit, and I\u2019m making a quilt for each of my kids so they have something from me until we can be together again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe students\u2019 support really made a difference for me, and now they\u2019re impacting my kids, too.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nursing students in the course Population-based Health in Community Practice discovered unique ways to apply their learning this past summer.
