In her community, she is a feminist activist. At home, she is a movie buff. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"578\" height=\"770\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Lerum-photo-2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25484\" style=\"width:1280px;height:655px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Lerum-photo-2021.jpg 578w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Lerum-photo-2021-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Dr. Kari Lerum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lerum created a course in 2017 that incorporates those formative identities. The result, Girls on Film, is a class that introduces students to feminist theory and film. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI started dreaming about teaching a class like this years ago,\u201d said Lerum, associate professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences at the University of Washington Bothell. \u201cI get to watch one of my favorite movies every week and then talk about it for two hours in class. I just love it.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The class screens films that explore the cultural and institutional implications of coming-of-age narratives. To be viewed in class, the films must be directed by a woman, have a female lead and pass the Bechdel test \u2014 a measure of the representation of women in fiction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFilms reflect and create central, cultural assumptions about gender across the life course,\u201d Lerum said. \u201cThe class is about the study of film \u2014 images, ideals, narratives and thematic emphasis create an opportunity to understand shifting cultural norms about gender. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I want my students to recognize.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wide range of topics <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"517\" height=\"770\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Jaresiah-Williams.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25485\" style=\"width:400px;height:600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Jaresiah-Williams.jpg 517w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Jaresiah-Williams-201x300.jpg 201w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 517px) 100vw, 517px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jaresiah Williams<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jaresiah Williams, a third-year student majoring in Media &amp; Communication Studies and in Culture, Literature &amp; the Arts, said she signed up for the class to learn more about feminist theory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am a huge film fan and wanted to learn how to apply critical thinking to the films I watch. Most of us consume media every day, myself included, so I think it\u2019s important to have a framework to understand the messages we ingest,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the years, Lerum has built up a collection of 75 films that fit the criteria for the class. Students watch films ranging from documentaries to horror movies and dramas to romantic comedies. They also see the work of directors from a variety of countries, including South Africa, New Zealand and France, to name just a few. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of those films, Lerum chooses eight to screen each quarter, depending on how relevant they are. Students in the 2021 class, which was held remotely, watched \u201cJust Another Girl on the IRT,\u201d \u201cBut I am a cheerleader,\u201d \u201cCarrie\u201d and more. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fourth-year student Jacky Guzman said \u201cCarrie\u201d was her favorite film. \u201cI love watching scary movies,\u201d she said. \u201cThis one did not disappoint!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Diverse perspectives   <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Guzman, who is majoring in American Ethnic Studies and in Society, Ethics &amp; Human Behavior, said her greatest takeaway was seeing how different power structures are applied through the film and entertainment industry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe films we watched in class built on my pre-existing knowledge of gender and power by providing a visual application of the concepts I have read about in my textbooks,\u201d she said. \u201cIt made all of the facts and figures come to life.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"578\" height=\"770\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Jacky-Guzman.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25486\" style=\"width:400px;height:600px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Jacky-Guzman.jpg 578w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Jacky-Guzman-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 578px) 100vw, 578px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Jacky Guzman<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>By watching the films, Lerum hopes the students gain an appreciation for how complex storytelling can be. \u201cIt is a great way for students to increase critical-thinking skills and reflect on the kinds of stories that shape our normative framework,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a cultural studies and feminist scholar,\u201d said Lerum, \u201cI am really invested in storytelling from diverse perspectives \u2014 especially from women and women of color.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Backstage passes <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the class had a new partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cascadiafilmfest.org\/mission\/\">Cascadia International Women\u2019s Film Festival<\/a>, a yearly showcase of films directed by women. The partnership allowed students to watch two feature presentations and one set of student shorts at no expense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese were films you can\u2019t find on Netflix or DVDs,\u201d Lerum said. \u201cIt was a really special opportunity.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s more, the students were able to participate in a panel and discuss with the filmmakers issues such as the current state of independent filmmaking in the United States and the importance of telling diverse stories. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the festival, the students wrote reflections on their experience, and the three most compelling were featured on the film festival\u2019s blog. \u201cThis provided an amazing platform for students to showcase their writing and build up their resume,\u201d Lerum said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pitch and publish <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For the course final, Lerum asked students to analyze a newly released film or TV series that would then be submitted for possible publication to Ms., an iconic feminist magazine started by Gloria Steinem in the 1970s. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"770\" height=\"515\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Summer-Ditona.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25487\" style=\"width:1030px;height:687px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Summer-Ditona.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Summer-Ditona-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Summer-Ditona-768x514.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/05\/Summer-Ditona-600x401.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Summer Ditona<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For Summer Ditona, a recent graduate from Media &amp; Communication Studies with a minor in Gender, Women &amp; Sexuality Studies, getting published would validate her skills as a writer. \u201cI have always enjoyed writing and consider myself to be good at it,\u201d she said. \u201cI have been excited for this opportunity since I heard about it the first week of class.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ditona decided to write about \u201cThe Mauritanian,\u201d a film that follows three people who uncover an extensive conspiracy while investigating the case of a suspected 9\/11 terrorist imprisoned at Guantanamo Bay. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have a strong interest in the 9\/11 attacks and the atrocities that have taken place at Guantanamo Bay,\u201d Ditona said. \u201cAs someone who remembers the attacks and the aftermath very well, I feel it\u2019s my responsibility to help spread truth for our nation to find healing.
