Sweeney<br>In many cultures around the world, death and dying are taboo topics&nbsp;that&nbsp;people ardently avoid. At the University of Washington Bothell, however,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/faculty-and-staff\/kari-lerum\">Kari Lerum<\/a>, an associate professor in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\">School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>, is challenging her students to take a closer look at these difficult&nbsp;subjects.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In&nbsp;her&nbsp;course&nbsp;Death Rituals, students examine&nbsp;death as it interacts with&nbsp;grief,&nbsp;cross-&nbsp;cultural&nbsp;traditions,&nbsp;new green-death technologies,&nbsp;the death&nbsp;industry&nbsp;and&nbsp;their own beliefs&nbsp;and associations around death.&nbsp;Overall,&nbsp;Lerum&nbsp;hopes students develop&nbsp;a deeper&nbsp;comfort in&nbsp;talking&nbsp;about&nbsp;grief,&nbsp;death&nbsp;and ritual&nbsp;as well as a better&nbsp;understanding of the death industry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis class has opened up so many conversations I otherwise might not have had with students,\u201d said Lerum. \u201cSome of our classes and office hours have been emotional, but this space and this course have&nbsp;also&nbsp;been restorative.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The birth of the course&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"160\" height=\"160\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/kari.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25994\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/kari.jpg 160w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/kari-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/kari-125x125.jpg 125w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Kari Lerum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The idea for this course began in 2009 when&nbsp;Lerum\u2019s&nbsp;35-year-old&nbsp;sister-in-law&nbsp;was diagnosed with a terminal disease.&nbsp;\u201cI was thrown for a loop,\u201d said Lerum. \u201cI make sense of things by investigating them, so&nbsp;one&nbsp;way I dealt with this&nbsp;heartbreak&nbsp;was to take&nbsp;a deep dive into&nbsp;cross-cultural&nbsp;literature and research around&nbsp;grief,&nbsp;death&nbsp;and ritual.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After her sister-in-law died in 2017, Lerum&nbsp;felt she needed to share her&nbsp;insights and&nbsp;information with other people.&nbsp;When Lerum envisioned the Death Rituals course, she knew she wanted to approach the topic from&nbsp;interdisciplinary&nbsp;and multicultural&nbsp;perspectives, so she created a syllabus that incorporated&nbsp;a diverse range of experts and material&nbsp;on the topic of death.&nbsp;With the&nbsp;summer quarter&nbsp;course&nbsp;set to go online because of&nbsp;the pandemic, Lerum worked to&nbsp;make the same resources available&nbsp;remotely.&nbsp;In-class visits became guest Zoom lectures.&nbsp;A visit to a mortuary turned into a virtual tour.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been extremely impressed with how well Kari was able to make this course into an online one,\u201d said Ray Lindquist, a graduate student in the Master of Arts and Cultural Studies program (2021). \u201cShe has done an excellent job of making the course feel accessible and interesting.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Filling in the blanks&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Death Rituals is first and foremost an interdisciplinary course.&nbsp;\u201cWhile&nbsp;I am well equipped to speak about death from cultural studies and critical theoretical perspectives,&nbsp;I am less adept at issues pertaining to&nbsp;thanatology, such as clinical psychology,&nbsp;nursing,&nbsp;hospice&nbsp;and mortuary&nbsp;work,\u201d she said. \u201cSo,&nbsp;I\u2019ve brought in experts&nbsp;in these areas to round out my course.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lindquist&nbsp;appreciated&nbsp;what the&nbsp;guest lecturers&nbsp;have&nbsp;added&nbsp;to&nbsp;the class experience.&nbsp;\u201cWith these&nbsp;experts&nbsp;present,\u201d&nbsp;Lindquist&nbsp;said, \u201cwe\u2019ve been able to put names and faces to the people who deal with death and dying every day. These are people you might encounter walking down the street and speaking with&nbsp;them&nbsp;has dug out some of the inherent \u2018spookiness\u2019 of death.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first guest Lerum brought to the class was Lillian Chen, a counselor in the Counseling Center at UW Bothell, who was excited about the opportunity this course represents. \u201cIn various countries or societies, including our own, there is a sense of taboo around the topic of death,\u201d said Chen. \u201cThis often prevents people from coming to terms with death or talking about it openly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"159\" height=\"173\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/BonnieBlachly-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25995\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Bonnie Blachly<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Bonnie\u00a0Blachly,\u00a0a\u00a0lecturer\u00a0in the School of Nursing\u00a0&amp;\u00a0Health\u00a0Studies\u00a0and a nurse,\u00a0spoke to the class\u00a0about\u00a0her work as an end-of-life doula \u2014\u00a0someone who helps guide a client through the process of dying.\u00a0Other guests\u00a0have included\u00a0heads of crematoriums and\u00a0funeral homes, including\u00a0the director of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/peoplesmemorial.org\/\">People\u2019s Memorial Association<\/a>, a\u00a0local nonprofit organization\u00a0and\u00a0community partner for the class.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTeaching in the School of IAS at UW Bothell has been perfect for courses like this one,\u201d said Lerum. \u201cOur&nbsp;culture in IAS&nbsp;encourages&nbsp;this sort of&nbsp;melding&nbsp;together&nbsp;the&nbsp;best&nbsp;of different disciplines&nbsp;and community partners. This has allowed me to&nbsp;bring&nbsp;in multiple&nbsp;angles&nbsp;to a very complex issue.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inequalities of death&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Teaching death rituals during the&nbsp;coronavirus&nbsp;pandemic&nbsp;and&nbsp;during&nbsp;the current&nbsp;racial justice movement&nbsp;has provided unexpected urgency to the course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople are&nbsp;generally&nbsp;in a state of grief right now,\u201d&nbsp;Lerum&nbsp;said. \u201cBecause&nbsp;we&nbsp;are processing public deaths like George Floyd\u2019s and living during a global pandemic, it\u2019s more important than ever that we learn how to have conversations about death.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With her students,&nbsp;Lerum&nbsp;explores&nbsp;necropolitics, or the politics of life and death. \u201cIt\u2019s important to consider&nbsp;how&nbsp;inequality and oppression&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;by race, class, gender expression and more&nbsp;\u2014&nbsp;impact how and when people die,\u201d&nbsp;she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By addressing these disparities,&nbsp;Lerum&nbsp;invites students to imagine the&nbsp;systems&nbsp;needed&nbsp;for all people&nbsp;to&nbsp;have vibrant lives&nbsp;and&nbsp;good deaths.&nbsp;\u201cWhen we acknowledge the ways that&nbsp;minoritized&nbsp;people die and the importance of how they die, we are amplifying the importance of the lives they\u2019ve lived.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lerum believes that by using models like the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.orderofthegooddeath.com\/resources\/death-positive-movement#1\">Death&nbsp;Positive&nbsp;Movement<\/a>,&nbsp;a&nbsp;frame of thought that advocates open communication about death,&nbsp;students will be able to&nbsp;engage around issues that are otherwise silenced because they are taboo. \u201cCOVID-19 and Black Lives Matter have both served as means to reckon with our ethical obligations when it comes to death,\u201d&nbsp;she&nbsp;said. \u201cThis moment in history is a big wake-up call for reassessing how we think about&nbsp;both&nbsp;death and life.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Starting conversations&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"160\" height=\"174\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Lillian-Chen-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-25996\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Lillian Chen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While this course can be heavy at times, Lerum&nbsp;believes&nbsp;that&nbsp;talking about death&nbsp;openly&nbsp;and from multiple perspectives&nbsp;is a liberating experience.
