It\u2019s been a period of strong growth that now will continue under a new strategic plan focused on expanding access to a University of Washington education and supporting excellence and achievement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan was drafted with contributions from across the UW Bothell community: students, faculty, staff, alumni, community partners and other stakeholders. It sets three strategic priorities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strengthen diversity and equity<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enhance community and campus engagement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Advance cross-disciplinary teaching and scholarship<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The new strategic plan was announced officially Feb. 19 at the North Creek Events Center where more than 150 people gathered to learn about the plan and to engage in discussion about how they can participate in its implementation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Driven by mission and vision<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"770\" height=\"583\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Wolf-Yeigh-Ed-Buendia.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Wolf-Yeigh-Ed-Buendia.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Wolf-Yeigh-Ed-Buendia-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Wolf-Yeigh-Ed-Buendia-768x581.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Wolf-Yeigh-Ed-Buendia-600x454.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Wolf Yeigh, left, and Ed Buendia proud of plan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The three priorities create a framework that will guide the work of UW Bothell\u2019s five schools and other academic and support units across campus, said Chancellor Wolf Yeigh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis new strategic plan \u2014 called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/chancellor\/strategic-plan\">Expanding Access, Achieving Excellence<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 will help us build on the momentum of the 21st Century Campus Initiative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with the initiative, the new plan also builds on UW Bothell\u2019s mission statement, vision and core values, the chancellor noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we look to the future,\u201d he said, \u201cUW Bothell will continue to be known for offering a diverse student population greater access to an excellent UW education \u2014 an educational experience that moves across multiple disciplines, connects with partners in the region and prepares our students to be leaders in their families, communities and careers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To assist in the plan\u2019s implementation, Yeigh also announced, a substantive portion of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/chancellor\/strategic-plan\/uwb-investment-fund\">UW Bothell Investment Fund<\/a>&nbsp;will be earmarked over the next six years to support projects that advance the three priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Priorities are pillars<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"770\" height=\"518\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Ed-Buendia.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Ed-Buendia.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Ed-Buendia-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Ed-Buendia-768x517.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Ed-Buendia-600x404.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Ed Buendia, right, discusses plan at unveiling.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The planning process was led by a Strategic Planning Team co-chaired by Ed Buendia, the dean of the School of Educational Studies; and Ruth A. Johnston, who was vice chancellor for Planning &amp; Administration when the project started.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Creation of the new plan took two and a half years, with a year of preparation and data gathering followed by more than a year for community input and then feedback on drafts. The planning team also brought in a consultant to help organize and refine all the data and ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This process was designed to ensure that the final plan reflects UW Bothell\u2019s current strengths while at the same time identifying areas to move forward with more concerted effort, Buendia said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, cross-disciplinary teaching and scholarship has long been a featured practice (as one of the \u201cthree Cs,\u201d along with connected learning and community engagement). Now, he said, the University can advance cross-disciplinarity by better aligning units and resources on a new scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buendia said it also makes sense that UW Bothell\u2019s new strategic plan aims to strengthen diversity and equity. \u201cAccess to excellence is predicated upon an inclusive, supportive campus community. We\u2019re making sure we\u2019re aligning our resources and culture to those values,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The community engagement element of the strategic plan highlights another value, Buendia said. \u201cThe DNA of the Bothell campus is one of partnered education.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with that, the plan also emphasizes the value of campus engagement to foster collaboration internally, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCampus engagement is the way we create a culture of learning and respect and reciprocity,\u201d Buendia said. \u201cImportantly, we are explicitly calling out the significance of internal partnerships and learning from each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Campus community project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"770\" height=\"488\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Launch.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Launch.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Launch-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Launch-768x487.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Launch-600x380.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Unveiling event at North Creek Events Center.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Buendia called the completion of the new strategic plan a celebration of community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were thrilled that people leaned into the activities and were highly invested in making sure we were leveraging the identity and assets of our campus,\u201d he said. \u201cOwnership really lies expansively with our stakeholders, campus faculty, staff and students.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In his remarks at the unveiling event, Yeigh praised the breadth of contributions solicited during the planning process, which incorporated suggestions and viewpoints culled from open forums, workshops and surveys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would like to thank everyone who contributed their ideas and insights to this new plan,\u201d he said. \u201cI know hundreds of people across campus and beyond participated in drafting and reviewing the strategies that will now guide our work in coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout your participation, we would not have this framework to the future,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd with your active engagement, I know we will achieve our goals for a better UW Bothell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Organizational values<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"770\" height=\"560\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Sheri-Willis.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26196\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Sheri-Willis.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Sheri-Willis-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Sheri-Willis-768x559.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2023\/06\/Sheri-Willis-600x436.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Sheri Willis, left, discusses plan.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Campus engagement is a critical part of the plan \u2014 and the plan\u2019s successful implementation, said Sheri Willis, an organizational development specialist who served as a project manager and facilitator during the final stages of the planning process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI see community as all of us. We\u2019re talking about all faculty and staff who are supporting student success and helping deliver educational needs,\u201d she said. \u201cIt was important for that to be part of the plan. We want to enhance and build on that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Going forward, Willis said, all three priorities identified in the plan present an opportunity to align efforts that cross the campus and bring synergy to work in various schools or other units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is a point in our development for us to create more discipline around what we want to focus on and the impact we want to have in the world,\u201d Willis said. \u201cThis is about all of us \u2014 staff, faculty, students and our community partnerships and those we have yet to build.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan puts these priorities in the forefront, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of folks are already doing great work.
