{"id":16367,"date":"2019-12-12T09:52:14","date_gmt":"2019-12-12T09:52:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=16367"},"modified":"2023-06-08T18:27:18","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T18:27:18","slug":"prosthetic-hand","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2019\/12\/12\/prosthetic-hand","title":{"rendered":"Students print prosthetic hand for Everett girl"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>An Everett girl who was born with a misshapen left hand now has a prosthetic she can use to lift a glass, hold her dog and even go up a climbing wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n\n    <div class=\"responsive-embed widescreen\">\n        <iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"UW Bothell Mechanical Engineering students design a 3D printed hand for 10-year-old Reese\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/t35-6R5dq8c?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>    <\/div>\n\n    \n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just amazing,\u201d said Reese Armstrong. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The hand was designed by Michael Meier and Adham Baioumy, both mechanical engineering students in University of Washington Bothell\u2019s 2019 graduating class. The prosthetic was then manufactured on campus using a 3D printer in the university\u2019s MakerSpace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ten-year-old Reese picked the color purple. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/files\/getattachment\/give\/annual-reports\/annual-impact-report-uwb18-remediated-r.pdf\">Reese\u2019s father, Brian Armstrong, asked the university for assistance and when the call for help was shared with students, Meier and Baioumy jumped at the opportunity.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their work was guided by Cassandra Wright, assistant professor in the <a href=\"\/stem\">School of Science, Technology, Engineering &amp; Mathematics<\/a>. In addition to helping Reese, she said, it was a powerful opportunity for the undergraduates to learn by working through real-life problems.
