{"id":15826,"date":"2019-09-18T12:41:02","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T12:41:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=15826"},"modified":"2023-06-08T18:27:48","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T18:27:48","slug":"epa-jaffe-pr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2019\/09\/18\/epa-jaffe-pr","title":{"rendered":"UW Bothell Professor Dan Jaffe named to EPA list of clean air experts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/newsreleases\/administrator-wheeler-announces-new-casac-member-pool-naaqs-subject-matter-experts\">Environmental Protection Agency<\/a> (EPA) has named University of Washington Bothell\u2019s <a href=\"\/physical-sciences\/faculty\/chemistrysci\/djaffe\">Dan Jaffe<\/a>, a professor of environmental chemistry, to its list of air quality experts.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/171206a-003.jpg\" alt=\"Dan Jaffe\" class=\"wp-image-26930\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The 12 experts will assist the federal agency\u2019s Chartered Clean Air Advisory Committee, providing technical expertise in a review of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for particulate matter and ozone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jaffe is an expert both on ozone, a key ingredient of smog, and on particulate matter, the tiny bits in smoke that may be breathed deep into the lungs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis appointment represents an opportunity to use my scientific expertise to support the EPA\u2019s decision-making,\u201d Jaffe said. \u201cThe long-term goal should be that our environmental laws, rules and regulations be based on the best available science and be designed to protect public health with an adequate margin of safety.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jaffe also is a recognized expert on the global transport of pollutants through the atmosphere. He leads research into local, regional and global pollution sources in the western United States. In addition, he is chair of the Physical Sciences Division in UW Bothell\u2019s <a href=\"\/stem\">School of Science, Technology, Engineering &amp; Mathematics<\/a> (STEM). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDr. Jaffe is known internationally as an expert on air pollution and especially on ozone. We\u2019re delighted that the EPA has recognized his work and that he is able to add his voice to the decision-making process,\u201d said Marc Servetnick, acting dean of the School of STEM.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EPA clean air committee had requested additional experts.
