{"id":15535,"date":"2019-07-31T16:29:19","date_gmt":"2019-07-31T16:29:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/?p=15535"},"modified":"2023-06-08T18:50:49","modified_gmt":"2023-06-08T18:50:49","slug":"husky-100-gonzalez-zapata","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/news\/2019\/07\/31\/husky-100-gonzalez-zapata","title":{"rendered":"From catering to starring in the Husky 100"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>In her first year at the University of Washington Bothell, Gloria Gonzalez-Zapata recalls working about 50 hours a week at four jobs: one job as a waitress and three with catering companies. In fact, one of the caterers provided the fare at the Husky 100 reception on the UW campus in Seattle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/20190315-gloria-gonzalez-zapata-0061-edit.jpg\" alt=\"Gloria Gonzalez-Zapata\" class=\"wp-image-26755\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While working at that event, Gonzalez-Zapata was noticed by Natalia Dyba, the UW Bothell director of global initiatives. \u201cShe recognized me and said, \u2018You know, one day you can be up here.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dyba was correct. Gonzalez-Zapata is now one of the Husky 100 \u2014 students who are recognized for making the most of their UW experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was working, watching everyone celebrating,\u201d Gonzalez-Zapata said, \u201cAnd now I\u2019m here.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hard work pays off <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Applying her work ethic to academics, Gonzalez-Zapata graduated in June, completing two degrees in three years. She majored in Law, Economics &amp; Public Policy and in Gender, Women &amp; Sexuality Studies, both in the <a href=\"\/ias\">School of Interdisciplinary Arts &amp; Sciences<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During her time at UW Bothell, Gonzalez-Zapata made three study abroad trips: to India, to Italy and another one to Spain and France. She also found a new job on campus with Commuter Services, at first writing citations and then working in the office to help implement the new permit system. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gonzalez-Zapata is now considering graduate school and would love a career creating policies for a \u201cbetter environment for our country and the low income and people of color \u2014 those underserved communities.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It wasn\u2019t exactly the plan at the start. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Commitment to community <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen I began college, it was pretty straightforward. I just wanted to get my degree and go,\u201d Gonzalez-Zapata said. \u201cOnce I was here a little longer, I wanted more than the degree. I wanted the experience to create community on campus.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gonzalez-Zapata and a friend helped start a chapter of Her Campus, an online magazine targeted at college women. They organized events, such as pumpkin carving at Halloween. With another friend, Gonzalez-Zapata started an informal healing circle for women of color, which received a <a href=\"\/news\/may-2019\/equity-and-inclusion-conference\">grant from T-Mobile<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are a lot of students who will fight for each other, who want to celebrate each other and create a welcoming community,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">An inspiration to others  <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Coming from a low-income immigrant family of Mexican and Panamanian heritage, Gonzalez-Zapata said she is glad to stand as an example to others who may be watching her now. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope I can inspire students like me, who can see themselves in my shoes.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> <br>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Gloria Gonzalez-Zapata once worked for the caterer at a Husky 100 reception.
