Alternative Spring Break (ASB) is a student led initiative that gives students the opportunity to take part in educational service projects during their scheduled spring break. The ASB program encourages active citizenship by providing service opportunities addressing issues within the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The alternative spring break volunteer sites included different locations including like the Youth Migrant Project in Burlington, two local farms, and a Lake Union waste cleanup. Students took part in these activities and engaged in services such as child care, compost turning, and community based discussions. Participants were even able to pick up nearly 70 pounds of trash while practicing their kayak skills on South Lake Union!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the end of spring break 2015, dozens of students will have participated in <a href=\"https:\/\/flic.kr\/s\/aHsk9BQ5iq\">community service opportunities throughout the region<\/a>. This year each participating student had an opportunity to engage in nearly 40 hours of community service through the course of 5 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ASB is created in partnership between <a href=\"\/sea\/studentleaders\/act\">Achieving Community Transformation<\/a> (ACT), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/connected-learning\/celr\">the Office of Community-Based Learning and Research<\/a>, and <a href=\"\/studentlife\">Student Engagement and Activities<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Published: March 27, 2015 UW Bothell students traded in sand and sunshine for shovels, sea life and service.
