Microsoft Office

Office application suites are used to create, edit, and print documents or presentations, which are some of the things you might have to do on a daily basis as an academic. While there are many options when it comes to choosing this type of software, the most common choice is the Microsoft Office Suite.

Microsoft Office

This software suite can work with Word documents (.doc and .docx), Excel spreadsheets (.xls and .xlsx), and PowerPoint presentations (.ppt and .pptx). Microsoft Office is part of the UWB standard software image, which allows students and faculty to freely access it at workstations across campus. However, if you need the application for your own computer, check for discounts and reduced prices at your department, the University Bookstore, UWare, or another University of Washington resource.

Support

UW Bothell supports the use of Microsoft Office on campus. Additional support for personal computers and advanced features is available from Microsoft and other third-party online sources.

Narrating PowerPoint Slides

For information about how to create pre-narrated slides in your PowerPoint presentation, please visit out Narrating PowerPoint Slides page.

OpenOffice.org

The most popular free alternative to Microsoft Office is the OpenOffice.org suite. Although OpenOffice.org is stated to be compatible with most files, you should always verify your work on a computer with the Microsoft software before sending it to someone else. This is recommended to help prevent the person or people who receive your file from seeing an unexpected layout or unreadable elements.

Support

UW Bothell does not provide technical support for OpenOffice.org. Instead, users may be able to obtain support through the third-party that provides the tool or public information on the internet.
