Intro to Canvas Discussions

Discussions are used in courses to facilitate collaboration for assignments and homework as well as encourage debate. To access the course discussion area, click on the Discussions link from the navigation menu on the left.

Discussions link on Canvas

The main page will display all the discussion topics that are currently active. Topics with the latest activity will be at the top while old topics will be at the bottom.

Some instructors may have made a discussion topic an assignment which will count for points. This will be indicated by the graded-symbol.png icon as shown in the screenshot below.

Start a New Discussion

  1. Click on the Start a Discussion button.

  2. On the new discussion form, enter a Topic Title and dicussion description or prompt. You may check specific options to determine how other course members may interact with the discussion thread. Links to other course pages can be inserted with the Insert Content into the Page menu.

  3. Click the Save button. Other course users will now be able to see the discussion.

Reply to Existing Topics

  1. Click on the link for the discussion that you wish to view and/or reply to.
     
  2. On the discussion page, click the Reply button to respond to the prompt.
     
  3. After typing your message, click the Post Response button to submit your comment, or the Cancel button to clear your entry.

Edit and Delete Existing Topics

  1. Click on the link for the discussion that you wish to edit. As a student, you may only edit the dicussions that you have created yourself.
     
  2. On the discussions page, click the Edit button to revise your original discussion topic and prompt. To delete the thread, click on the gears.png button and select Delete. Please note that once a thread is deleted, it may not be recalled.

Uploading Text and Audio/Video Files

To upload a text file:

  1. Go to the discussion board topic you want to reply to and click within the "Reply" field to bring up the text editor

  2. Click on the Attach button on the lower-left corner of the editor and then click on Browse
    (Note: if the Attach button is unavailable, please contact your instructor to adjust the course settings to allow file uploads in Discussions)

  3. When you have found the text file on your computer, select it and then click on Open
  4. The text file is now attached to your reply. Click on Post Reply when you are done and the file will be submitted along with your reply to the discussion

To upload an audio/video file:

  1. Go to the discussion board topic you want to reply to and click within the "Reply" field to bring up the text editor

  2. Click on the film strip icon, which is in between the Pi symbol and the Font Size drop-down menu

  3. Click on the Upload Media tab and then choose between uploading an audio or video file

  4. Selecting either option will prompt you to look through your computer for the file. When you have found your audio/video file and have clicked on Open, the audio/video file will begin to upload. At this point, you can also rename the file. When the progress bar has filled up, the video will automatically be placed within your reply

  5. When you are finished with your reply, click on Post Reply and the audio/video will be placed along with your reply to the discussion. The audio/video files may take some time to convert to play within Canvas. Give this process a moment before playing the media.
