Combining Sections Into One Course

Instructors teaching multiple sections of a course are able to cross-list one of the sections into the other; keeping the student enrollment separate, while having both sections access a single Canvas course. This makes it so that an instructor only needs to post announcements, upload files, and create new assignments in a single Canvas course.

Note: If you cross-listed your course without creating a backup section and are unable to de-cross-list your course, you can contact help@uw.edu to have the section placed back in its original course.

Cross-Listing Courses

  • First bring up the course that will be merged into the main one and click on Settings.
  • On the settings page click on the Sections tab at the top.

  • Click on the section that contains the students for the course, which brings up a list of enrollments.
  • Next, click on the Cross-List this Course button located on the right side of Canvas.

  • This will bring up the Cross-List window. In the Search for Course input box, type in a portion of the target course's title to bring up a drop down menu listing courses containing that text.

  • Select the course that you want to use and then click Cross-List This Section.
  • ‚ÄčIf the search is not finding your course you can find the course ID by going to the target course's homepage and copying the number at the end of the URL.

Making a Backup Section to Allow for De-Cross-Listing

Note: This section is optional and does not need to be completed if you do not want the option to de-cross-list the course in the future.

When you cross-list the only section of a course, you are moving the entire roster for the course into another course, including yourself. This will remove your authority to de-cross-list the section back into its original course.

You can circumvent this issue by creating a backup section for the course and simply have yourself be an instructor for that section.

  • To create an additional section go to Settings in the course.
  • From here click on the Sections tab

  • Then in the input box type in the name for the new section and click Add Section.
  • Once the section has been created open the People section of the course, hover over your name and click on the gear icon that appears on the right side.

  • In this menu click on Edit Sections to bring up a new window.
  • Next click on the book icon to bring up a list of possible sections and click on the new section that you created.

  • Click on Update and you will now be an instructor for the new section and can safely cross-list knowing you will be able to de-cross-list easily in the future.
