To keep our space safe and welcoming for everyone, we ask that students, staff, and faculty follow the guidelines below. If behavior doesn\u2019t meet these expectations, or those in the <a href=\"https:\/\/policy.uw.edu\/directory\/sgp\/\">University\u2019s Student Conduct Code<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/wac\/default.aspx?cite=478-121\">Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 478-121<\/a>, you may lose access to Learning Commons services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning Community Values<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>By entering the Learning Commons, you agree to engage with tutors, staff, and peers in a manner that is appropriate, courteous, and constructive, ensuring a positive learning environment for all. In practice, this includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Respectful interactions<\/strong>: Participate in your session actively: collaborate and consider questions carefully. Remember, this is a space for learning and curiosity. Sometimes it also means struggle which is key to deep learning, and respect is still expected when you are frustrated.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Noise awareness<\/strong>: Silence phones and device speakers; take calls in the hallway; use an indoor voice; and, when studying in large groups, please be aware of your noise levels.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shared space care<\/strong>: Clean up before leaving; treat furniture, materials, and equipment responsibly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Academic integrity<\/strong>: Seek learning support, not substitute work or shortcuts; follow course and university academic integrity policies.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Remember the Role of a Tutor<\/strong>: Tutors facilitate learning and skill-building. They do not guarantee or even discuss outcomes, e.g., grades. We may not have all the answers, but we\u2019ll help you find them &#8211; together.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Learning Commons Expectations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In short, disruptive behavior or actions in the Learning Commons aren\u2019t okay. Our staff will decide what counts as disruptive on a case-by-case basis and Learning Commons leadership has the final say. More specifically, everyone who visits agrees to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Formally Check-in<\/strong>: Present valid Husky Card, NetID, or Student Number as required and follow check-in, check-out, and attendance procedures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Honor appointments<\/strong>: Arrive on time; cancel or reschedule in advance.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Follow staff directions &amp; posted policies<\/strong>: Follow Learning Commons Community Agreement, space limits, and technology use guidelines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use appropriate language &amp; behavior<\/strong>: Profanity, insults, or obscene gestures, and\/or hostile or disruptive conduct are not allowed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Limit conversations to professional, academic, and learning-focused topics<\/strong>: Avoid topics unrelated to your session, and when someone tells you that a topic is uncomfortable to them, please listen, stop talking about that subject, and honor their boundary by not bringing it up in the future.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Don\u2019t engage staff for purposes unrelated to learning<\/strong>: Soliciting opportunities, promoting products, or conducting business are not permitted without prior approval from Learning Commons leadership.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Refrain from asking Learning Commons staff personal questions or requesting contact information<\/strong>: Your relationship with the staff does not extend beyond your session time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Protect the learning environment<\/strong>: do not interfere with others\u2019 sessions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Breaking the Learning Community Agreement &amp; Consequences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Any behavior that does not follow our Community Expectations listed above or otherwise disrupts services will result in the following progressive discipline steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Response &amp; Consequences<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 1 \u2013 Review\/Renewal of Community Agreement<\/strong>: Learning Commons staff will issue a verbal reminder to follow the policies listed above and\/or ask you to review this document. Inappropriate behavior that stops after Step 1 requires no further response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 2 \u2013 Immediate Action<\/strong>: Learning Commons staff may issue a warning, end a session, or ask a visitor to leave the space. Severe cases, e.g., threats, harassment, theft, aggressive or obscene gestures directed at individuals, will result in immediate removal and potential referral to Campus Safety and\/or Student Conduct. This step may include written documentation of the incident and will be sent to all affected parties after the incident including the office of Student Conduct. The details of the incident may be discussed in a scheduled meeting with Learning Commons leadership to avoid future violations. Without this, persistent behavior issues and\/or boundary pushing will result in Step 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Step 3 \u2013 Loss of Services<\/strong>: Repeated violations can lead to a temporary loss of access to Learning Commons services and\/or a referral to Student Conduct. The ban is reversable given the completion of the \u201cRegaining Access\u201d process outlined below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Severe Misconduct<\/strong>: Some behaviors (e.g., violence, threats, harassment, issues regarding student safety) may trigger immediate ban from Learning Commons access and referral to Campus Safety and Student Conduct without prior steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All incidents are documented. Staff and leadership determine the appropriate response based on severity, impact, and pattern of behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Regaining Access (Meeting with Leadership)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>UW Bothell students who lose access to the Learning Commons may request reinstatement by completing all of steps of the following restorative process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Restoration Meeting<\/strong>: Schedule a meeting with Learning Commons leadership e.g., Director or Assistant Director.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Reflective statement<\/strong>: Provide a brief written reflection describing (a) what occurred, (b) how it affected others and the learning environment, and (c) what you could have and will do differently.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Action plan<\/strong>: Agree to specific, measurable conduct commitments e.g., check-in compliance, session attendance, language standards, noise, space care, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Acknowledgment of terms<\/strong>: Review the terms for reinstatement, including understanding that further violations may result in extended or permanent loss of privileges.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Learning Commons Use Probation<\/strong>: Return to the Learning Commons under a probationary status; any further misconduct during probation may lead to longer suspension or permanent loss of access.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Campus referrals (as needed)<\/strong>: Complete any required actions from the Student Conduct Office or related campus resources before reinstatement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Learning Commons is here to help every student learn in ways that are efficient, effective, and fair.
