Middle Level Endorsements

For Students Enrolled in the K-8 Teacher Certification Program

  • Middle Level Humanities;
  • Middle Level Math
  • Middle Level Science

Middle Level Endorsements enable an individual to teach in grades 4 - 9 in a specific subject area. Students who have the ability to pass the standardized content tests (WEST-E exams) in one or more of these Middle Level subject areas, may pursue a Middle Level Endorsement along with their Elementary Education endorsement during their enrollment in the program.

If you would like to pursue a Middle Level Endorsement, please contact Jon Howeiler, Certification Officer and Field Placement Coordinator, as soon as possible after you have been admitted to the K-8 Teacher Certification Program.

Step 1. Register for appropriate WEST-E Middle Level Test

To Register and for more information on the WEST-E tests, visit the WEST-E Website. For information on Washington State Learning Goals and Grade Level Standards and Resources, visit the OSPI website.

The following is a list of the corresponding WEST-E test numbers.

  • Middle Level Humanities 010 and 011
  • Middle Level Math 012
  • Middle Level Science 013

All candidates for Middle Level endorsements are required to pass the appropriate WEST-E test before they begin the Dyad Placement in Autumn quarter (see Step 3).

Step 2. Register for UW Bothell course B EDUC 480 "Middle School Learners"

"Middle School Learners" is a 3 credit, undergraduate course offered at UW Bothell. This course is usually available in Autumn and Spring quarters, and meets once a week in the evenings. You may register for and take this course along with your required coursework in the K- Teacher Certification Program. This course is required for the Middle Level Endorsement.

Step 3. Successfully participate in a Dyad Placement Autumn quarter of K-8 Teacher Certification Program

All UW Bothell Education Program candidates for Middle Level endorsements will be observed teaching in a Middle or Junior High School classroom setting. Placements in these classrooms will be arranged by Jon Howeiler, Certification Officer and Field Placement Coordinator. Education Program Field Instructors and Master Teachers will each perform one of these observations over the duration of the placement.
