YouTube at the University of Washington

Everyone with a UW account has access to their own YouTube video hosting service. YouTube offers an environment that streams well to most devices and it does automatic captioning.

The automatic captioning service is done via programmed algorithms, so depending on the environment and quality of the recording, accuracy will vary. Because of this, you should edit the automatic captions or add your own to your videos. YouTube provides easy-to-follow instructions to edit automatic captions for videos you create. University of Washington also provides instructions for creating a caption file for free and adding your own caption file to a YouTube video you own.

Why are captions important?

Videos should be produced and delivered in ways that ensure that all members of the audience can access their content. At minimum, videos should include accurate captioning, for all viewers.  Benefits go beyond helping with disabilities, anyone can benefit! For example, users who:

  • Have English as a second language
  • Would like to read as they listen
  • Watch the video in a quiet environment

A 2016 captioning study done by Oregon State University found that students use video captions and transcripts if available, "primarily as a learning aid, not necessarily as an accommodation." (3Play Media, 2016)

Getting Started

If you haven't activated Google Apps for your UW account, follow the activation instructions provided. 

  1. Go to the Google Account page to sign into Google Apps

  2. On the upper right area of the page, locate and select the Google Apps icon, a square made up of three rows of smaller squares, Google Apps Icon. You will see four rows of Google Apps, select More below the apps shown.

  3. Select YouTube YouTube Icon. This will open the YouTube environment. If the system does not log you in automatically, click on the Sign In button on the upper right of the screen.

  4. Before you start uploading, you should removed the default 15-minute video limit by confirming your account.

  5. Click on Upload at the top of the page. Video formats allowed are mov, mp4, avi, wmv, flv, webm.

  6. Before you start uploading the video, you can chose the video privacy settings.

  7. Select the video you would like to upload from your computer. 

  8. As the video is uploading you can edit both the basic information (title, description, tags, etc.) and the advanced settings of the video.

  9. Click Publish to finish uploading a public video to YouTube. If you set the video privacy setting to Private or Unlisted, just click Done to finish the upload or click Share to privately share your video.

  10. If you haven’t clicked Publish, your video won’t be viewable by other people. You can always publish your video at a later time in your Video Manager in Creator Studio.

Once the upload is completed we will send you an email to notify you that your video is done uploading and processing. 

Sharing Your Video

Once the video has finished processing and is published, you can share it via email, by posting the link or embedding the video in a webpage or ePortfolio. To share your video:

  1. Start watching the video on youtube.com
  2. Under the video, click Share Share button
  3. You will see 3 tabs with different sharing options:
  • Share: In this tab, you will see a link that you can copy and paste somewhere else, like in an email message.
  • Start at: To link to a specific part of the video, check this box and enter the start time before you copy the link. For example, to start the video at 2 minutes and 30 seconds, check the box and enter “2:30”.
  • Social networks: Click on a social network icon (e.g. Facebook, Twitter) to share the video there.
  • Embed: This tab provides code to embed the video on a website. This code is for an iframe you could insert in your ePortfolio.

Embedding Video in Your Canvas ePortfolio

Embedding a video in your ePortfolio allows for the video to be seen right on the page, without needing to navigate to YouTube. To embed a video in your Canvas ePortfolio:

  1. Go to the page where you want to place the video artifact
  2. Click on Edit This Page on the pages menu
  3. Add a text description of the video you are about to embed in the Rich Text Editor
  4. Select HTML/Embedded Content on the pages menu to add the area where the video will display
  5. Paste the YouTube embed code or iframe into the box provided
  6. Click Save This Page
