Under the general direction of the Systems and Services Manager, the Operations Student Technician is responsible for first level problem resolution, incident recording and escalation in support of the UW Bothell computing infrastructure, including accounts, access groups, server hardware/software, and other technologies.  This position will work closely with IT colleagues and the UW Bothell academic community on a variety of computing related procedures and projects.  Tasks may involve assisting IT staff with hardware and software deployments, compatibility testing, software updates and patching, creating and updating technical documentation, web pages, tutorials, etc.  Student technicians may also be directed to assist with inventory, researching and generating reports on new IT technologies, and training.
 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Utilize superior customer service skills
  • Provide first-level review and response for IT Operations inquiries and support requests
  • Provide accurate and timely logging of technical support requests and resolutions through the GLPI issue tracking database
  • Escalate technical issues as appropriate following Operations procedures
  • Act as a liaison between customers and IT staff to assure accurate problem interpretation
  • Help users perform and troubleshoot simple to complex computing and configuration tasks with supported hardware and software
  • Perform testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of computing infrastructure hardware and software
  • Review and update Operations and IT documentation as assigned
  • Produce and post content for the Information Technologies website and sites therein
  • Assist in the development and facilitation of tutorials and workshops for computing infrastructure processes and services
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of IT supported products and services
  • Work on improving skills or completing special projects
  • Complete other projects as assigned

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Be able to communicate effectively through email, over the phone, and in person.
  • Provide a high level of customer service.
  • Be able to work with, and support, a wide variety of users who have a range of technical experience from beginner to advanced.
  • High attention to detail and response times.
  • Possess a desire and aptitude to learn Information Technology support functions and processes.
  • Have an ability to work both with a team and independently, be self-motivated.
  • Be able to work in a fast-paced environment where you must be flexible and learn quickly.
  • Support other IT functions, where some lifting may be required (up to 50 pounds). 
  • Prior experience in a customer service position highly desirable.
  • Prior experience working with server hardware and operating systems, active directory and other computing environment elements desirable.
  • No specific educational or certification requirements.

TECHNICAL QUALIFICATIONS

Understanding of basic IT fundamentals including:
  • Basic understanding of email systems
  • Basic understanding of virtual computing infrastructures –VMWare or others
  • Understanding of accounts, file security and security groups
  • Troubleshooting
  • Networking
  • Windows Environment
  • Basic experience configuring hardware and software
  • Experience with basic web tools and website editing
Operating Systems experience:
  • Windows Server (2008, 2012, and/or 2016)
  • Windows workstation (Windows 7, or 10)
  • Linux/Unix (any variety -desirable)
  • Mac OSX (any version –desirable)
Preferred application experience
  • Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Publisher)
  • Cloud resources such as Google drive/apps, or Office 365
  • Remote desktop clients
  • Command prompt, cli, or PowerShell
  • Active Directory management tools
 

HOURS

Monday – Friday, variable shifts
