{"id":24205,"date":"2024-01-16T19:44:15","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T19:44:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/?page_id=24205"},"modified":"2025-10-01T20:30:45","modified_gmt":"2025-10-01T20:30:45","slug":"stem-opt-extension-requirements-and-faq","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/f-1-benefits\/practical-training\/stem-opt-extension\/stem-opt-extension-requirements-and-faq","title":{"rendered":"STEM OPT Extension Requirements and FAQ"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes to contact information<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Report US address or contact information to the SEVP portal within <strong>10 days<\/strong> of any change.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you are unable to update via the SEVP portal, please use the <a href=\"https:\/\/iss.uwb.edu\/\">international student portal<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Changes to employment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-highlight-paragraph-grey-background\">When an employment change has occurred, submit a new Form I-983 training plan form to the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/iss.uwb.edu\/\">international student portal<\/a>&nbsp;for ISS staff to update your employment information with SEVP. A new I-20 can be provided to you upon request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Report Employment changes to ISS within <strong>10 days<\/strong> of any change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All employer changes must include a new Form I-983.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are no longer working at a previous employer, you must submit the final evaluation with that employer&#8217;s Form I-983 training plan, indicating your final day of employment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Validations &amp; Evaluations of employment every 6 months<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>We must validate your continued participation in the STEM OPT Extension at 6 &amp; 18 months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must also submit a validation and evaluation (page 5 of your I-983) at 12 &amp; 24 months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You will be sent reminder emails from SEVP close to your evaluation time, but you should mark it in your calendar so you don&#8217;t forget.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Go to the <a href=\"https:\/\/iss.uwb.edu\/\">international student portal<\/a> to complete the STEM OPT Validation request every six months.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you do not report to us on time, you risk having your SEVIS record terminated by SEVP.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unemployment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>You have 150 unemployment days on your STEM OPT Extension, minus any unemployment days you used while on Post-completion OPT. Another way to look at it is to take your remaining Post-completion OPT unemployment days and add 60 additional days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ending OPT Prior to your OPT end date<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Transferring out and pursuing a new program of study<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether you&#8217;ve been admitted to a new program of study at UWB or another school, you must let us know. You&#8217;ll find requests in the <a href=\"https:\/\/iss.uwb.edu\">international student portal<\/a> for both of these events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For transfer out requests, please note that your OPT will immediately terminate on your requested transfer out date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leaving the US and abandonment of OPT<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are leaving the US and no longer planning to use OPT, please complete the Leaving US request on the <a href=\"https:\/\/iss.uwb.edu\">international student portal<\/a> after you have departed.
