{"id":24163,"date":"2024-01-16T19:37:17","date_gmt":"2024-01-16T19:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/?page_id=24163"},"modified":"2026-01-21T19:38:39","modified_gmt":"2026-01-21T19:38:39","slug":"curricular-practical-training","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/f-1-benefits\/practical-training\/curricular-practical-training","title":{"rendered":"Curricular Practical Training"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-highlight-paragraph-grey-background\">Curricular practical training (CPT) is defined as alternative work\/study, internship, cooperative education or any other type of required internship or practicum offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-highlight-paragraph-grey-background\"><strong>CPT is not supplemental training experience, but rather an integral part of an established curriculum.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-highlight-paragraph-grey-background\">All CPT at UWB requires course registration. Those courses are all in-person, meaning you have a face-to-face component (on-campus) with faculty. You cannot take CPT in another state <em>during an academic quarter<\/em> unless you are completing the training remotely from Washington state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Application<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/f-1-benefits\/practical-training\/curricular-practical-training\/cpt-application\">See detailed information about applying here.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-h-5-font-size\">CPT is required for:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Unpaid training or internships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Paid training or internships<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fieldwork<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participation in a practicum<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offsite experiences with a sponsoring employer<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-h-5-font-size\">CPT Eligibility:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Limited to F-1 students who have completed 3 cumulative academic quarters without interruption to their enrollment or SEVIS record<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Undergraduate students are not eligible for CPT if they have not yet declared a major<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must be integral or required for your major field of study<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must be registered for qualifying course credit (talk to your academic advisor to see if you are eligible)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Training must last no longer than one quarter for each authorization. Each enrolled course needs a separate request and authorization.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Must be applied for and approved prior to start of training or employment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-left has-h-5-font-size\">CPT Offer Letter requirements:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Include a <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">signed<\/span><\/strong> CPT offer letter on company letterhead<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include the site address where the training will take place<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include your start and end dates that must not pre-date or exceed the current quarter<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include hours\/week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Include a detailed description of training duties<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>An offer of employment or work contract is not the same as a CPT offer letter. Start\/end dates and purpose of the training must align with the curricular requirement. If your training is not curricular, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/f-1-benefits\/practical-training\/pre-completion-opt\">please look at OPT<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offer letter alternatives can be discussed with schools depending on the training and agreement with the cooperative employer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-5-font-size\">Important:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>CPT cannot be issued retroactively.<\/strong> CPT must be applied for and approved prior to the start of the corresponding employment. <strong>Working without authorization is considered a serious violation of your F-1 status.<\/strong> This violation will result in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/current-f-1-students\/enrollment-requirements\/termination\">termination<\/a> of your F-1 status, without grounds for reinstatement, and the possibility of barred reentry to the United States.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Please do not assume you can accept <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/international-student-services\/f-1-benefits\/volunteering\">volunteer or unpaid<\/a> work without CPT.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Curricular practical training (CPT) is defined as alternative work\/study, internship, cooperative education or any other type of required internship or practicum offered by sponsoring employers through cooperative agreements with the school.
