All things have form, and all things undergo formation. Form often conveys the sense of stable or evolving structures. Formation draws our attention to the active creation of culture and society through diverse means, including the texts, artifacts, and sites of creative arts endeavors. Together, these two concepts ask that we conceive of written arts as evolving through pre-existing forms and their transformation within changing cultures and societies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As Wallace Stevens writes, \u201cThings as they are changed upon the blue guitar.\u201d Marshall McLuhan comments on how our worlds \u201care not passive wrappings, but are, rather, active processes which are invisible. . . . Counter situations made by artists, provide means of direct attention and enable us to see and understand more clearly.\u201d Beyonce in \u201cFormation\u201d plays with the contradictions between regulated social forms and their redeployment in deliberate acts of sabotage and vamping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fall Convergence 2016 addresses the most specific and most general aspects of form and formation: from the visual impact of print on the page; to engagement with diverse languages as conveying realities that cannot be easily translated or absorbed into another language; to cross-over endeavors between multiple arts and media; to bodily precarity and changing loves, sexualities and erotics; and to pressing political movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
