Taught under course number BIS 403, the Human Rights Seminar combines academic study at UW Bothell with a transformative, week-long immersion in Washington, D.C., where you will:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Meet policymakers and changemakers\u2014engaging with legislators, federal agencies, NGOs, think tanks, and foreign embassies.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gain firsthand insight into how human rights policies are shaped, debated, and implemented.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Must be available to meet in-person on UW Bothell campus for two full-day workshops (8:30 AM \u2013 4:30 PM)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Strengthen your analytical and research skills by investigating real-world human rights challenges and policy responses.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Expand your professional network with experts in government, advocacy, and international affairs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:44px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Instructor<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uwb.edu\/ias\/faculty-and-staff\/camille-walsh\">Camille Walsh<\/a> is an associate professor in the School of IAS, teaching across Law, Economics and Public Policy, American and Ethnic Studies, and the Masters in Policy Studies programs. She teaches courses on International Human Rights Law, and co-teaches a study abroad program on \u201cGender, Culture and Human Rights\u201d in India with Professor Alka Kurian. Her research focuses on racial segregation, economic disparities and the history of education policy and law in the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She holds a BA from NYU, a JD from Harvard Law School, and an MA and PhD in U.S. History from the University of Oregon. Preference will be given to applicants who have taken courses that are relevant to the Washington D.C. Human Rights Seminar or have other previous learning experiences related to human rights and public policy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Must be available to meet in-person in Washington, D.C. for the entirety of the program. The program begins at 6 PM on Sunday, September 13, 2026, and concludes in the evening on Friday, September 18, 2026.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Must be eligible to register in 5-credits of BIS 403 during Autumn 2026.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Must be available to meet in-person on UW Bothell campus for two full-day workshops (8:30 AM \u2013 4:30 PM) during the first week of September (exact dates TBA).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Must be in good academic standing (i.e. not currently on Academic Warning, not placed on Academic Alert or Academic Drop due to low scholarship).&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-h-4-font-size\"><strong>How to Apply<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fill out the online application form before the deadline. Late applications cannot be accepted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students are encouraged to draft responses to the following questions in a separate document before starting their application.
